NEVER use these people for anything! Borderline incompetent. Completely inefficient! They are the banks attorney for the close of my house sale. We should have closed more than a month ago; but are still waiting for them to clear the house for sale. Buyer's attorney, ready. Seller's attorney, ready. HHK (banks attorney)-can't seem to get anything done! Cannot even get a closing date on the schedule because you can't get anyone in this firm to get their job done! Ridiculous! Don't even deserve one star! This law firm and many of its lawyers and paralegals need to learn to stop lying and learn how to treat people nice. They tell you to call or email whenever then when you do they never answer or respond. When you do finally speak with someone they lie to you like it's the only thing they know how to do. When you question said lies they switch lawyers on you. They steal money from clients and show up to court with blue hair. If you don't believe me just read other reviews they all say the same. I had the most dismal experience with this firm. Where to start? Well, I contacted them on behalf of my aging and ailing parents after hearing good things. I was bounced around for a bit until I was able to finally secure a phone appointment due to my mother being unable to come in person after a terminal cancer diagnosis. My parents, who are both very elderly and gave me explicit permission to handle their affairs, expressed that they did not want to speak to the lawyers unless it was to agree that everything stated was true and correct. As soon as I got on the phone, I was barely able to get a word without the attorney, Erin Cummings, prattling on and practically badgering my parents to speak, even though they told me, and her, they wished for me to handle their affairs. I understand that you need to hear that one is not under undue influence and to confirm that their wishes are being handled the way they would like, but I could barely get a word in edgewise. It was a drawn out, stressful experience for both of my parents. I also expressed that I believed my mother did not have much time left and while I understood documents take time, I let her know that things weren't looking too good. Two days later, my mother passed. I emailed Mrs. Cummings promptly and let her know. I did not receive any correspondence back... until I received the will, and the invoice. Now, to the second issue. The will. It was RIFE with spelling errors (multiple names were misspelled throughout), vague language that could easily be contested in court, and an ill-advised reflection of my parent's wishes with shoddy protections. Frankly, it was one of the most laughable documents I have ever read in my life. I understand we live in Binghamton, and we don't exactly attract the "savviest" crowd, but as a pre-law student myself who is planning on going into ESTATE LAW, I took this document as an example of what not to do. Rightfully, I was a bit taken aback by not only this half-assed work, but the fact I emailed her a week ago about my mothers death and had still heard nothing, so I sent another email expressing that I found it insulting I was expected to pay for something that was so thoughtlessly thrown together as well as not receiving any reply after my mothers passing, and that I would no longer be needed any services due to the abundant lack of professionalism of this entire experience. I was met with a very rude email, stating that there was no way anyone could have known about her passing (well actually, you could have, if you read your email like most professionals do) and that I was still on the hook for paying. Understand, you will not be getting a dime from me nor my bereaved father. Let this be a warning to anyone who seeks services here... unless you want to pay a high price for rude attorneys and terrible workmanship, I'd go absolutely anywhere else. read more

This firm needs a refresher course on how to prevent undue influence of the elderly. See if you can figure out why. Back in 2011, my father started showing signs of dementia and was diagnosed with Alzheimer's' soon after so, my step mother started taking care of him and all of his finances. As my father got worse, he lost the ability to carry on a conversation, so she would do the talking for him. By 2020, my father was in the advanced stages of Alzheimer's and my step mother's memory had been rapidly declining. She began losing and misplacing items and could not remember where she had just been. She was repeating her questions and statements, and having trouble making decisions. At times she was a bit paranoid because she was confused with who or what was going on around her. My father soon started showing signs of neglect and was becoming unrecognizable to us. He wasn't showering, shaving, or changing his clothes. He stopped brushing his teeth and his hair was way overgrown. He had lost weight so we asked our stepmother if she needed help with him, but she declined saying 'she had it all under control.' In March of 2020 when Covid shut everything down and people were distancing themselves from others, my cousin told me that I should not come around my father and stepmother because I might expose them to covid. He assured me that he and his girlfriend were quarantining and were limiting their exposer to others, and since they lived close by, promised to check in on them every day, and bring them whatever they needed. But in June of 2020, my cousin and his girlfriend, without informing anyone, drove my father and step mother to the law firm Hinman Howard & Kattell. They told lawyer Marty Kane that my father and step mother wanted to make changes to their wills. Marty had prepared multiple wills for my father in the past and has known them for years. While there, my stepmother did the talking and insisted on changing both of their wills, leaving everything to my cousin and girlfriend. Marty asked my father if he wanted to change his will but my father said 'no'. Marty told my stepmother to return with a list of the changes she wanted to make to her will. Weeks later, all four returned with a list of the changes my step mother wanted to make to both my father and her wills. The list was in my step mothers and cousins handwriting; not my father's handwriting. In July, all four returned again to sign the new wills after Marty had made the changes. The lengthy will was dictated to my father and asked if he understood what he was about to sign, and he nodded. Marty asked my father while the other three were in the room, if he was being coerced by anyone to sign the will, and he supposedly said 'no'. My father died in November of 2020 of Alzheimer's, four months after his will was miraculously signed in time, thanks to the incompetence of Marty Kane. My conniving opportunist of a cousin and his degenerate girlfriend made millions by taking advantage of a person with Alzheimer's', and are about to strike it rich again when my step mother passes. This dynamic duo took it upon themselves to pack her stuff up and moved her in with them after my father died, preventing us from having any contact with her that might interrupt their plans. My cousin and girlfriend know what they have done, yet they want us to keep our mouths shut. They would prefer people to think that they made millions from real estate rather than swindling it from the elderly. Their immediate family knows what is going down but have stayed quiet in order to get a piece of the pie. Even my other cousin, who is a police officer for the Town of Owego, has chosen to keep his mouth shut and is allowing this to happen. I'm still amazed to this day how some people can sleep at night. Marty Kane knows that he made some mistakes, but he also knows that my step mother is about to experience the same fate unless someone steps up to the plate and does something about it. When is this going to stop and will anyone at Hinman Howard & Kattell ever intervene? My cousin and his girlfriend don't give a damn about my step mother. They are just waiting for her to die. We hired Hinman Howard and Katell to do a home sale for us in August. It was a cash sale, and was to take 30 days. As we neared the end of the 30 day period we made multiple calls to get a closing date or any information. No one would return our calls. Finally on October 31st we were told they needed to extend because the paralegal was on vacation and no one did anything while she was gone. Ok, we gave them the benefit of the doubt and continued the process. We called on thanksgiving, nothing, and they were angry we wanted updates. This should have been a sign but we continued.. finally a closing date in February... 1 day before the closing the buyer backed out. Then we waited weeks for the deposit to be returned only to be told today that nope no money coming to you we are keeping it for the abstract. We are beyond upset with these so called professionals who because of their inaction and incompetence wasted our time, and lost us a sale. Beware and stay clear of this practice. read more
