I am a parent who has always tried to support my child's school, but after a deeply troubling and…read moremishandled situation, I feel compelled to speak out. My daughter came home with visible bruising, and as a concerned parent, I reached out immediately -- emailing the principal and administration and messaging the teacher, since it was discovered on a Friday and the school was closed over the weekend. I received no response. First thing Monday morning, I went to the school in person. Principal Barbara Leon was unavailable to speak with me. I met with Ms. Michelle, who listened and said she would try to gather information. She later called me back with very few answers and oddly asked that I not speak with any other parents about the incident. We then followed up in writing with Principal Leon, as well as administrators Julia Pease and Holly Oliver, requesting records and any available footage from the day of the incident. Again, we received no response. Instead of answers, we were met with a DCF report filed against our family -- and a visit from both police and a DCF officer. We were never contacted directly by the school with any findings or follow-up about what actually happened to our daughter. Adding to our frustration, Principal Barbara Leon sent a message to other parents stating the incident had been handled -- despite never once addressing or confronting us, the actual parents of the child involved. She took time to reassure others, but gave us no communication, no transparency, and no accountability. Aside from completely neglecting the incident, the way this was handled shows a serious failure in leadership and concern for student well-being. We are left with growing concerns about what the school may be trying to hide. As parents, we deserve the truth -- and above all, our children deserve to be safe.

She was treated very badly by the girls in her class, they were very mean and excluded her without even trying to get to know her. To the staffs credit, they did make an attempt to get the girls to interact & be more inclusive but you can't turn mean kids into nice ones. I ended up pulling her out. Horrible experience here. The students are rude and clicky. The two stars is for the staff and their efforts to make it right.

Kentwood has been a lifesaver & constant source of support for my family over the past 6&1/2 years…read more My child started there in 5th grade & is now in 11th. We placed S there after trying for 2+ years to get S help thru the public school system. We adopted S after S was placed in foster care at 9 mos old. S endured heavy drug use by S's bio mom while pregnant & lack of care the first 9 mos of life. S has severe ADHD, ODD, & is on the spectrum (very high functioning) with severe short term memory deficits & math LD. Behavior due to severe frustration over inability to grasp things was getting worse & worse despite twice weekly counseling at school & in our home, tutoring & a begrudgingly granted 504 Plan that did nothing for S. When S started in 5th grade, S was extremely defiant & wouldn't work or follow the rules. S was turning our home into a war zone w/constant tantrums & fighting. Kentwood uses a VERY strict behavioral intervention chart (BIC) that they mark every 1/2 hour or hour for every student. If the kids are acting out so much that it disturbs the other students, they are moved to a special skills lab w/staff trained to work with these situations so they can return to the classroom. The teachers are just AMAZING & incredibly calm & well trained. They communicate with parents regularly & fully -- both good & bad. So nice to get emails or texts telling me of something helpful or smart my kid did vs. always getting those terrible calls about a problem. S is very verbal & social & likes to read. Comprehension is not great, but there's a lot of effort & interest. Math is a whole other story -- ugly, bad, tantrum causing. Instead of pushing S forward into areas S would never understand, they work w/S to get S fully understanding the areas missed & then move forward at S's own pace & ability. I've had to adjust my expectations & realize/accept that S will never fully get some of the math areas or be very academic. And that's OK. The staff has worked extensively w/S & classmates on social skills, life skills like budgeting & saving & price checking, etc. They talk a lot about learning to watch for others' reactions & social cues & they practice it. Conflict resolution too. How to handle frustrations & advocate for yourself. I'm amazed at how much S has grown emotionally over the years. S has been nurtured by so many different teachers & staff over the years & thru multiple grades. They have been there for me to turn to re: behavioral issues at home & always offer good ideas & practical, hands-on help at school so we're working in tandem to help S. S LOVES S's teachers, & has made incredibly good friends there as well. The classes are very small & personalized to what the individual kids need. The small environment, mask wearing, cleaning & distancing has made me comfortable allowing S to go back to school in person. I highly recommend this school if your child has a special academic/behavioral needs that just can't/won't be met in the public school setting.

I went to RFB&D last night pretty exhausted from work (and Yelping.. let's not lie to ourselves). I was pretty dang scared about hopping into a booth and lending my voice to some books...but the staff was incredibly nice and joked around with me to make me feel more comfortable. When you get there, you can go into a couple booths to see what book you want to read from. They do a lot of K-12 textbooks, but there are also fiction, non-fiction, and special interest books as well. For the most part, you won't be the only voice on an entire book.. so a lot of the time, you're just picking up where someone else left off. I picked Social Psychology with all it's crazy and rather interesting viewpoints. I imagine there might be a time where you won't like any of the books in the booths.. but you've got to remember this is volunteer work. And who knows, you might get into something you never thought you'd like! The guy monitored me for the beginning but then left me alone for most of the recording, checking back when I needed help. You're pretty much master of the recording, so if you mess up a word (holy Moses.. Social Psych books should NOT be read aloud) you can go back and fix it. And there are always staff around in case you have any questions in the middle of recording. Sessions can run anywhere from an hour and a half to three hours. I got pretty engrossed in the material I was reading, so I was there for about 3 hours. They have sessions all day (9- 8:30pm) which I find convenient. You just have to call ahead and make an appointment so that they can accommodate you. The location is also very accessible. Very close to the Lechmere stop and less than 10 minutes from the Kendall stop. It's quite close to Cambridgeside Galleria as well. I will most definitely be back to volunteer! I signed up through Boston Cares, but you can also just call RFB&D straight out. OH! AND there is a section of books that you can take when you leave because they're all through with recording them. They even have business cards for volunteers so that you can recruit more people. Want mine? ;)

Volunteering is very flexible... basically you go in whenever you can. You get to read books that you wouldn't normally read and you're helping people! All of the people that work here are very sweet and are overjoyed when new people want to join. The studio is very close to the Porter Square t stop and it's a really nice space. I highly recommend this experience to everyone! At least go in for an orientation and check it out especially if you've ever enjoyed hearing yourself talk or enjoy reading.
