Ed is a true master - one of the first graduates of the world-renowned Krenov School of Fine Woodworking. It's under his close supervision and attention you will learn and build in a spacious, fully equipped shop. I walked into the beginner furniture and cabinet making class with a simple expectation to build something out of wood, but I walked out with a new mindset, a sense of great accomplishment and courage to continue pursuing learning this amazing craft...and I made beautiful oak bench. I've also attended some of their bus trips, although the most recent one I'd signed up for to the Brooklyn Museum was cancelled due to low enrollment, which was disappointing. They have a great variety of offerings, and the teachers I've had have all been friendly and knowledgeable. While many of their sessions are during evenings and weekends, there are also quite a few that take place mid-day during the week. If you have a Monday-Friday 9-5 day job, they're not really accessible, which is unfortunate.

Here, they show you how to use each tool, with safety in mind. You are explained the details about wood grain and how it warps, and you get thorough answers to questions you may have. If you are a woman considering taking a course here, you will not get that 'I don't belong here' feeling, you know what I'm talking about ladies. The two instructors are pleasant and professional. The only thing I felt a little iffy about was walking to my car in that neighborhood after class, because you have to park in the street or take public transit, I'm not familiar with the area and it seems a little shady at first glance. I'm from a different ghetto, maybe if I knew this neighborhood better it wouldn't be so bad. Look it up on street view, it's in a residential area, no restaurants in short walking distance to get lunch so bring your own, but the instructors usually have lunch for the students. Unless you're vegetarian, definitely bring your own or you'll be taking a chance. They also have a pot of coffee and a snack to munch on at breakfast.

After a series of evening courses, I'm now much more confident in using tools, thinking about setting up a small home woodshop, and I have a new, beautiful bookcase in my house. The class had a mix of younger and older people, men and women, folks with all sorts of backgrounds, income levels, city v. suburbs. The instructors, Mario and Alan, give a good balance between keeping the class going overall and individual attention while working on each phase of the project. I can attest that they are both very patient and personable. Both Alan and Mario love woodworking and you learn as much from talking through tools or a particular project you might be thinking about for your house as you do from the more formal elements of the course. If you're thinking about woodworking as a hobby or want to see how furniture really comes together, I highly recommend this course.

I've seen other Fortis locations…read morelisted, but they have different addresses, so to be clear, this review is for the Fortis Institute located at 450 N Sam Houston Pkwy E, Ste 200, Houston, TX 77060. I attended this school for the Medical Assistant program to work toward becoming a CCMA (Certified Clinical Medical Assistant). At the beginning, my experience was okay and I didn't have many issues with my classes or instructors. However, as I got further into the program, my experience started to change. There were three staff members in particular that I had issues with. 1. Ms. Marin: I later found out that she would talk about me and my friends, and there were times when she would call us out in front of the entire class in a way that made us feel singled out or less than everyone else. I don't think students should be made to feel embarrassed in front of their classmates, especially by an instructor. 2. Ms. Nun: Whenever I had class with her, I felt like we barely learned anything. I specifically remember my friends and I asking if we could go through the skills list and practice different things to see what we still remembered and what we needed more help with. We were trying to make sure we were actually prepared, but our request was basically ignored and we barely practiced anything. 3. Ms. Moxcley: Toward the end of the program, we were told that we would receive assistance with finding employment. I remember reaching out to her multiple times about finding a job, but I would either receive no response or very little communication. Because I wasn't getting anywhere, I recently contacted Ms. Goss for help finding an MA position. I explained that I'm specifically interested in working as a Medical Assistant in an OB/GYN clinic. She told me she would call me. When she called, I happened to be busy and missed it, but I returned her call shortly afterward. She didn't answer, so I sent her a message letting her know I had called back and was available. This happened Tuesday. By Friday, I still had not received a response to any of the messages I sent afterward. I finally sent another message, and she responded saying she would call me "momentarily." I waited about two hours and still did not receive a call. That is what finally pushed me to leave this review. One of the things students are told is that Fortis will help them with employment after completing the program. In my experience, once you're finished with the school, getting that help has been extremely frustrating. Messages go unanswered, communication is inconsistent, and the employment assistance I was told I would receive has not been what I expected. I also don't understand the point of asking students what area they want to specialize in as an MA if the positions they are being directed toward aren't related to what they said they were interested in. I understand that nobody can guarantee you a specific job, but there is a difference between not being able to guarantee employment and simply not communicating with a former student who is actively asking for assistance. I completed my program and I'm genuinely trying to start my career and put my education to use. I'm not asking anyone to hand me a job. I'm asking for the career assistance and communication that we were told would be available to us. Unfortunately, my experience trying to receive that assistance has been extremely disappointing.
