I was in search of an employment attorney and saw HKM had a 24 hour number. I called on a Saturday morning to see if they might be able to help. I let the very kind person taking the information down that my situation was quickly progressing and I was hoping to connect with an attorney before Tuesday. She said it was possible that they'd call back Monday, but no guarantee and it could be up to 3 business days. Totally understandable and after giving my info I went about my day hoping I'd get lucky and hear back Monday. My phone rings about 7p and it's one of the HKM attorneys, Brian Dolman. Mr. Dolman was very upfront and let me know he couldn't take the case, but then took the time to talk through my situation. It wasn't legal advice, but it was incredibly practical, logical advice and exactly what I needed to hear to help me be in a much better headspace to address the issue I'm grappling with. I couldn't be more grateful to Mr. Dolman and won't forget his kindness. If I do need an employment attorney in the future, I would certainly call them and recommend others to do the same! read more

When submitting my case, I was asked for a small overview of what happened. To make things short for the representative (because I was under the impression an actual attorney would call me) I gave the beginning and end. No one ever called me to discuss my case in detail, but a week later, I received an email basically stating they didn't think I had a case. The email ended with "I understand that you've spent a significant amount of time talking with us and sharing some difficult and personal issues. I'd encourage you to continue to advocate for yourself and consider talking with some additional employment attorneys who may be more well suited for your specific issue." In other words, these are practicing attorneys and it's very clear they are not skilled in what they do. If you decide to pay upfront for an attorney, this is a clear sign to look elsewhere. Don't let them steer you away from seeking legal help because I've talked to attorney and with all of the evidence I provided to them, I DO have a case and pretty great chance at it! Brian Dolman of HKM is an absolute unit of an employment attorney. He supported my case for over six years, from an initial employer contact in 2018, through a full administrative law trial in 2020, the employer's appeal from that trial in 2021, and the oral arguments before Div I Court of Appeals in 2024. He and his amazing partner Erin Norgaard then plunged into full trial prep while working overtime to reach the fair settlement that we all knew we deserved. Though it was hard going at times, and we had plenty of setbacks, neither Brian nor Erin ever gave up on me or my case. They did all of this versus one of the three largest corporations on earth -- a company with infinite money to spend on lawyers and depositions. At every step my HKM attorneys were fearless, professional, and highly communicative. At every step I knew they had my back. At all times they treated me with respect and discretion. Ultimately we got a fair result that enabled me and my family to be okay while we recovered from what that company did. I cannot recommend Brian Dolman and Erin Norgaard highly enough. This has been the worst experience of my life. These are the most corrupt attorneys Brian Benestad & Ryan Kenny. They have dealt with my case unethically and were in collusion with the opposing counsel and told me I would lose my case to back me into corner in order to force me into taking a low settlement. Throughout the tenure of my case they kept me out of the loop unless I asked a million questions, then they would act like I was bothering them an would choose to ignore me until they felt like responding or not at all. My case was intentionally sabotaged over the same racism I was trying to fight for a quick buck. Trust me never deal with these wheelers and dealers-thieves. They will tell you your case is strong just so you go with them. They will make you have a botched mediation where they won't fight for you or nothing, so now you end up owing money for that. Then they will make you have a deposition where they will charge you several of thousands of dollars for. Then they will write up a careless response to opposing counsels Summary Judgement and expect you to correct it. Lastly they will lie to you and tell you that you will lose at the same Summary Judgement that they handles carelessly and tell you that you owe them 10k, and tell you it's in your best interest to take the b.s. settlement offer. They will also tell you that it is your best option. They screwed me out of millions potentially because they're agenda is not to fight in court but handle your case how they see fit for a quick dollar. Brian called me and told me Ryan Kenny dropped my case but yet they are still taking a 3rd of my settlement when I never signed a renewed contract with anyone at HKM. They are unethical and I plan on suing them and having the 2 of those attorneys disbarred. I will not stop until I get those results. Their sales personnel asked info on what I needed. I told them I needed an employment contract drafted, in response to a bad contract I was given that I did not sign (as it did not uphold the agreement the business owner and I had made). I, in no uncertain language, made this clear that I needed a new contract drafted not an existing one reviewed. They immediately said pay us $475 for 20 pages and a 1 hour consultation. I wait until the scheduled consultation and get on the phone where I'm informed by a rude Tiffany Joseph Goodson that the $475 wouldn't cover creating my contract. She talked down to me and accused me of talking over her when I calmly asked why they took my money just to tell me I needed to pay more when I had made my case abundantly clear to begin with. Instead of noting that my time had been wasted, she was indifferent and left me with no recourse but to refund. Don't assume HKM Employment Attorneys will do due diligence and get the details of your case correct. In my experience, they will take your money as quick as possible without regard for your time and then be sanctimonious should you express discontent for their processes. read more

A few years back I got in touch with this business, after my first career came to a screeching halt when the vessel I worked on caught fire and burnt down at sea, followed by company politics, and found myself out of a job. I had a huge chip on my shoulder, and was probably oozing with entitlement, and HKM gave me advice I didn't want to hear, so I wore them a bad review on Yelp. A few months ago I received a call from Daniel Kalish at HKM apologizing for any ill feelings I had from our previous history, and he expressed interest in better assisting me in resolving any and all hardships I brought upon myself from previous jobs and career. Daniel was extremely professional and courteous, while simultaneously being aloof, easy to speak with, and down to earth. He explained how my original grievance with my old career had limited to no opportunity I would of wanted. He also asked about any hardships I was dealing with, and made several recommendations to assist me in freeing myself from debt and financial insecurity. I want to really drive this home that years ago when I was behaving extremely entitled and upset at losing a financially lucrative career, I gave HKM a really bad review because I was self-centered and blind to my destructive behavior on the job which lead to my becoming unemployable, HKM hadn't done me any wrong I hadn't given them anything to work with. Some time later Daniel Kalish from HKM got in touch with me, in the effort to give me a better outcome. I am satisfied. Daniel's genuine attitude to help me has been one of the very best experiences of customer satisfaction ever, and would recommended HKM to anyone for employment legal assistance. UPDATE 9-23-2019 Dan has reached out to me (as expected) to see about reconciling this, and has offered to give me council on my case for free. I have amended my 1 star rating to 2. I do not believe in second chances when this has obviously happened more than a handful of times in the recent past. You've had your second chance with the others who slipped through the cracks due to poor quality control at the intake side. I can't see giving more than a failing grade (less than 3 stars) for a service that did not deliver on their promise - to hear you out, and to see if there is an opportunity to work together. Take this as a learning opportunity. The quality control of potential new client intake is sorely lacking. I approached this firm in early August, with a large case seeking counsel. I did not receive a reply back until I had to call them almost a month later. The staff told me that they indeed sent a letter to my designated email, and if I'd like, they could re-send it. I asked them to, as well as CC'ing another email handle in case of a spam filter. I received the email to both handles. The email simply said they could not represent me on this case. From the recent reviews, it seems like this is an increasing trend. Dan, I have a for SURE slam dunk case needing legal representation and your client intake team likely didn't even present my case in front of you, or one of your partners. Called for a consult on Wed May 16. Scheduled a 15-20 min call with someone who would take the details of our case and forward to the attorney that same evening. The woman who took our information was VERY unprofessional, abrupt and condescending on the phone leaving us feeling even worse. She told us the attorney would call us within 72 hours to discuss. Yesterday, May 29th, 13 days later we called back to find out status and was told we would receive a call by end of business today with further information from a supervisor. The supervisor called and told us they wouldn't take our case. No explanation as to why or consideration for our situation. No referral to an attorney who may be better suited to take on such a large employer or suggestion of how we could retain assistance. Just a flat no. I understand that this case might not be for this firm but why make us wait 14 days to tell us they wouldn't take our case? Especially when we have a very important deadline of June 6 to retain council. The good news is we have a union representative, a shop steward and former supervisor who have all advised to get an attorney and have referred us to an attorney who will moat likely take on this case since the union and HR have offered to assist because the treatment my significant other has received is so unacceptable and illegal. It's very unfortunate that HKM came so highly recommended in the Seattle area to the point we waited longer than the timeframe they gave us and we were treated so poorly. Not even 30-minutes later, I received a generic email indicating "Thank you for contacting HKM Employment Attorneys LLP. Regrettably, our firm is not in the position to represent you in your matter at this time." The email goes on to say that "we are not expressing an opinion on the merits of the claim" but it does not give an explanation as to why. Conflict of interest? The receptionist indicated HKM was taking new clients, so HKM declining to even talk to me, makes me feel as if I do not have a case - which I strongly believed I did but now I'm questioning myself which is disappointing because it took me 2.5 years to work up the courage to even make the call. When I think back to the questions I was asked, I'm starting to wonder if my case didn't check off the big $$ boxes. I've dealt with big legal corporations before, but I didn't realize how truly evasive and dismissive they can be towards potential clients.
