Pretty good place to stay while you're in Bad Axe the county seat of Huron Michigan. The place is medium priced but the amenities are great. You get a board room for free of charge, indoor swimming pool and a hot tub and large exercise room with excellent weight resistance machine with lot of accessories! The cleaning crew in the morning expect you to be up by 6 A.M. and will knock your door and open even if you are sleeping butt naked. You have to let them know in advance whether you want your rooms cleaned daily or every other day. I was naive and said just the towel service and found out that they don't clean anything. The grossest part is that the rim of bathroom washbasin has black stuff growing all around it. I spent twenty minutes cleaning that up with hot water using the free plastic cup. I nearly passed out how much scums it had. Overall it was quiet and lovely. The free breakfast was delicious! But nothing like the European hotels breakfast. read more

I could not believe the price of the room my son paid. Almost $200.00 for 7 hrs when he was stranded due to snow. He works next door at Walmart and he got sick with the flu and was snowed in. I was very disappointed in this hotel. When I made my reservations, it was for a wedding block and for a two queen standard room. I was told it would be $203. When I checked into the hotel, I noticed that the fee was $244 and for a suite I asked the person at the desk about it and was basically blown off, accept it because that's all they had left. When we got into the room, it smelled terrible. It smelled like a dirty mop and moldy. Linens were damp as if they had not been dried properly. The room smelled so bad I had to go and buy Febreeze spray and spray the room. My family and I visit bad ex once a year and we always stay at this hotel. I don't know if it has changed owners or what has happened, but I was very disappointed. read more

We stayed over Labor Day weekend. We enjoyed the convenient location with easy access to Port Austin, Caseville and surrounding areas. The hotel appears to be recently updated. The pool is nice and has an older lodge feel. It seemed like the chlorine/chemicals were a little off and they could do a better job with testing the water. The breakfast is pretty standard and what you would expect from a Holiday Inn Express. The staff kept everything stocked for a packed house traveling for the holiday weekend. We enjoyed our staff here and would do definitely stay here again. read more

A decent place to stay. The room was clean, the pool and hot tub were relaxing. As others have noted, the breakfast was fairly basic and lots of carbs ... with not a lot of healthy breakfast options other than yogurt and fruit. The coffee in the room, however, was awful ... not drinkable, in fact. Did not appreciate, however, being subjected to Fox News in the big TV in the breakfast room every morning. I'd strongly encourage the management to put on something less controversial and politically biased. read more

Not a bad place. I stayed for 3 days for a wedding and had a great time. Based on the other reviews, maybe Gary doesn't work here or something since I didn't see anyone who looked like a manager-ish position who looked like a Gary. Anyways, back to the review. Room felt very spacious. There is a table but no desk chair so working on my laptop was a little awkward since there are two single sofas. There seems to be a fridge and microwave in all the room, which I loved. Bathroom was spacious but the shower head was a little lower than what I am used too. Hot water was out and got it quick. Another factor that was nice is they have free DVD rentals right at the front desk. I didn't use this feature but there seemed to be a big collection of dvds. TV was nice. HDTV with a good selections of satellite (I think) channels. Now to the free breakfast. Let's put it this way, I used to be a chef in Chicago who worked at a few high end places. And while the breakfast was not mind blowing, it was one of the nicest I've ever attended. They had biscuits and gravy which always gets bonus points. Even more because it was actually delicious. The buffet did have a lot of selections of cold foods too. There was always one person working and they never put out too much food so you know that your breakfast was not sitting out from 6am to 10pm since they would be consistently restocking/refilling. I always try to come to Bad Axe to visit my family away from my family aka: best friend and his folks, once a year and I normally will stay with them. However, I wouldn't mind staying here again if I couldn't find a couch or just to return for the biscuits and gravy. read more

The hotel is in the process of being renovated and updated, it looks good but overall there is a lot of construction dust and mess all over including in the rooms. My room had the mini fridge against the wall blocking the walkway to one side of the bed. Also in a room near mine, 1st floor and 1st door to the right of the lobby, someone was cooking meals in their room, I saw because they had the door propped open and it caused the entire hallway including my room to smell bad all day and night. Last minute plans to stay. Got a king suite with jacuzzi. Jacuzzi didn't work so they quickly moved us to another room just like it. The room was nice, the bed comfortable and the sheets felt very nice. Good selection of channels on tv, with a dvd player (good selection of dvds by the front desk). Didn't have breakfast because of covid restrictions, but offered a breakfast grab bag. We enjoyed our stay. read more

The hubs and I bunked here for one night last month and it was pretty good. We even got a free upgrade to a suite, which I suspect is related to the fact that Google has the address to this hotel listed as Rapson ROAD... 55 Rapson Rd. is a dirt patch with a telephone pole, about 3 miles away. Didn't exactly want to stay in the dirt patch, and the desk staff at this place were nice enough to give us the upgrade. They were pretty funny as well. Hot breakfast. Nice looking pool (wish I'd brought my suit!). Free wi-fi. HD TVs. Lots of space to spread out. Give it a try when you find yourself in Bad Axe next. read more

Very nice , solicitous staff. Rooms are clean and well kept. Usually everything is well functioning except for occasional clogged drain or tub that won't hold water. The beds are phenomenal!! I have s really bad back and am sensitive to cheap old mattresses. The ones here are nice and supportive but still soft and dozy you just sink in. Idk how they do that. I think the breakfast is really nice here. Far better than most hotels in this price range. read more

The bed was comfortable and pillows were perfect, but there was loud and constant noise in the room, both a high pitch buzzing and a rumbling. It was awful. Neither of us slept well. The pool and fitness center were nice. Breakfast was disgusting. I was invited to join the "rewards club" or whatever and then bothered in my room about it and had to sign myself up. This hotel is under new management. The entire hotel is a construction zone, supplies and equipment are piled up everywhere. A recent stay included all the hotel key locks not working, frankly, stay anywhere else in Bad Axe. I've stayed here many times, it's a shame to see such a fine hotel sink so low. read more

The Holiday Inn Express is the only "name brand" hotel in the area. The facilities are what you would expect at a Holiday Inn; however, the service is not what you would expect from any hotel due to the "managing partner" who works at the front desk. *Advice* STAY SOMEWHERE ELSE DOCUMENTATION - If you do book with this hotel be sure to ask for a confirmation number or some sort of verification of your reservation. Have it handy in case you run into problems. CALL prior to arrival (as ridiculous as it sounds) to ensure that your room is still available and to verify the cost again. DON'T TAKE IT PERSONALLY - If there is a problem during your stay or you happen to check in when the manager/owner is at the front desk, don't take his behavior personally - you are not the only one. He is well versed in argument, manipulation, and increasing his business' profit. Don't expect an apology. Don't expect him to provide a solution to the problem. What they served was perhaps the nastiest things I've ever saw and I travel a lot and stay in a lot of hotels. The eggs, biscuits and breakfast meats were inedible. The coffee wasn't hot. Great place to stay. Very nice room but we did have a suite. TV in bedroom and sitting area. Bed was a bit hard for me but that's just a personal preference. Showed up at about 10:30 pm after a soccer game. Ladies at counter were nice and switched our room so we could be next to the other teammates. Great pool area open until midnight so that's a plus. If you are hosting a wedding in the Thumb, do yourself and your guests a favor and avoid this hotel at all costs... Have them stay at the Franklin Inn. Without beleaguering you with our disappointingly poor experience, I will touch on the problems we had. There is zero organization and accountability at this hotel - no coordination, email communication, customer service, etc. For example, without notice, 3 weeks prior to the date, all remaining open rooms on our wedding-block were released. Half our guests still had not made reservations and were fighting for space. They were mainly fighting with the GM, Gary, who would not honor the block rate, was now charging double, and required a 2 night minimum. Gary openly argued at the front desk with several of our guests who, without warning, were charged 2 nights instead of 1. Because there is no accountability or communication, when you call (there is no other way to book) you rely on them for accuracy. Upon checkout, Gary disagreed with several of our guests who booked for 1 night at the block rate and charged them for 2. Gary felt entitled to do this because of the limited options in Bad Axe, the festival taking place the same weekend, and because it was his word against ours. Before the ceremony and during the reception, I was on the phone with the hotel to try and fix the nearly dozen issues we were facing... 2 people actually had to stay in the conference room on cots (after pleading with the hotel). The most disheartening part - when my bride checked into our room the morning of the wedding (which by the way was not comped) and kindly asked Gary to fix the issues, he threatened to kick her out of her room. "Maybe this isn't the hotel for you"... As if to say, too bad, it's last minute and take it or leave it. Do yourself a favor... Stay somewhere else. read more

I experienced the absolute worst customer service I ever have in my life during my recent stay at the Holiday Inn Express in Bad Axe, MI. A large group of my friends were in town for a friend's wedding and a group of rooms had been blocked off at this hotel. I made a reservation for my room well in advance for Saturday night and was quoted a total of $84.50 for my one night stay. Upon arrival on Saturday, I was informed that I had booked a two-night reservation (Friday and Saturday) and that I was marked as a "no show" for Friday night. The manger of the hotel, Gary Malchow, told me that as a "compromise," he would only charge me 50% of the cost for the room on Friday night. I was a little shocked to hear this, considering the fact that I never made the reservation in the first place! After meeting up with our other friends at their rooms (also at the same hotel), we found out that we were not the only ones having problems with our reservation. One couple had the same problem that we had (booked for two nights when they had only reserved one night) and had their room given away; another couple was told they could only stay in the wedding block if they booked a two-night stay (completely ridiculous); and another friend was overcharged and was not given the wedding block discounted rate. We were appalled at the fact that not only had we all had issues with our rooms, but we had all experienced the same terrible guest service from Gary. We felt that he handled our individual situations poorly and was uncooperative and disrespectful. We later found out that the bride herself had confronted him about a pricing error for yet ANOTHER guest, and he had been so rude and unhelpful that when she tried to work out a solution, he told her "the conversation was over" and "maybe this was not the right hotel for her and her guests." The next day at checkout when my roommate and I talked to Gary about the mix-up, we explained that we did not think it was fair that we were going to be charged for a night that we did not reserve. Gary just stood there and repeatedly said "a two-night stay was booked and we no-showed on Friday." He never once admitted that the mistake could have been his own fault and he never apologized or seemed to even care that we were upset. I am a manager myself at a large corporation and our number one goal is to make the customer happy, and we will do whatever it takes to achieve that. Gary seemed to care less about how we felt and when my roommate tried to get in touch with his superior, he told me that she needed to get off the phone and that he was "ending the situation" and was not taking the extra charge off our bill. In other words, he told us to leave. I am still shocked about how this entire situation was handled and how Gary treated my friends, the bride and groom, and myself. He was rude to everyone, showed no sympathy, and I honestly got the impression that he was just trying to take our money. Unrelated to our reservation issues, the hallways in the hotel reeked of marijuana (which lingered into the lobby), and the man staying in the room across from us said that his room had a strong moldy odor to it. I think that this Holiday Inn Express should be shut down or new management should be hired immediately, because it is truly a disgrace to the Holiday Inn chain. read more

The best place to stay in Bad Axe. I stayed a week and the daily cleaning had some problems like one day they forgot to makeup the room. One night a dog in next room barked periodically which made sleeping difficult. The breakfast staff were good but they ran out of food often because it didn't get ordered. If Yelp would let me give this hotel zero stars I would. Do yourself a favor and avoid this hotel if you're traveling to the Bad Axe area (at least if Gary is still the manager). We experienced horrible customer service from the time we called to book a room until the minute we checked out. The rooms are nice but the way they run the business is crooked. There were several variances with price even though we were with a wedding party block, they required a mandatory two night stay which was not told to us when we booked, and because we didn't show up for Friday night our hotel reservation was given away and we had to wait until after 6 PM on Saturday to see if there were any cancellations so we could have our room back. We were never called about the overbooking or the Friday night no-show so we had driven over 3 hours to come to a wedding and found this all out when we attempted to check in. Gary's response was "it doesn't look good that you'll have a room here tonight." He was very unaccommodating and rude to say the least. There are other lesser known hotels that are more worthy of your business (Econo Lodge, Franklin Inn, etc.). read more
