Whatever we asked they right away were so happy to help. Really this town is just full of friendly people, but it's greatly appreciated when you're staying in a new place where you barely speak the language. And the bar right next to the pool was really one of the best in town. We and some friends have tried a few others in town and there's some decent ones, and maybe like two others I'd recommend, but this one is top notch people. Oh and the view..... the view!!! Stunning. My driver was growing frustrated, not just by the language barrier between he and I but rather, for…read morehis inability to find Hotel 1850. We'd circled the town multiple times before a policeman advised him that the hotel is on a street where cars aren't allowed. Hotel 1850 is located right on the Jardin de la Union, the most central gathering place in all of Guanajuato. Yes, you can't get there by car but hotel staff is happy to meet you one short block away to guide you and your luggage directly there. And from there? Well, this is the perfect location for everything you may wish to do in Guanajuato City. I spent 3 nights here, at a cost of about $227US per night and that included daily breakfast for 2 at the restaurant beside the hotel. My room was nicely decorated, immaculate, featured a safe, mini-bar, ample hot water, and good water pressure. A rooftop bar plays loud music so I was pleased to be on a low floor but there's also a lot of music in the Jardin out front. Happily, closing tight the windows in the room drowned out all outside sound. The hotel itself is quite nice and safe, with a doorman and workers always right up front. Staff were warm and hospitable and versed in English. I didn't ask much of anything but they made it clear they could make arrangements for wherever I might wish to go or anything I might wish to see. On site spa services and a gym add to the offerings. I chose Hotel 1850 after doing a lot of research and was pleased to learn that I'd chosen well.

The hotel, formerly a luxury residence (our understanding) is beautifully appointed. However, while we enjoyed a complimentary glass of wine upon check-in, that was a one-time only gesture. Additionally, when we asked for an extra coffee pod (and powder creamer) for our in-room coffee maker, we were advised that the cost would be 35 MX pesos ($1.88 US). For a hotel that charges upwards of $300/night, that leaves a bad taste in my mouth. That's pretty cheesy. Most of all, I would suggest some TOWEL RACKS and CLOTHING HOOKS. There is nowhere to hang either. Our room, very pretty, lacked bathroom privacy--one would step totally naked out of the shower into the main room (here, a few hooks for the hotel bathrobe would be helpful). I HIGHLY suggest a shower bar so that one might adjust the shower head, as well as the larger receptacles for shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. I love the L'Occtaine brand, but it is sometimes impossible to squeeze lotions out. The service itself was GREAT!!!!

Cecilia checked us in and couldn't have been nicer. The room was spacious enough, and the bathroom was well-appointed with a great shower. My only quibble was that it didn't have a mini-fridge (although there was a place for one). We asked about either changing rooms or having one brought up. It turned out that only four of the rooms had them installed, but they did provide one for us on the second day. The staff was lovely and Rafael was especially helpful in providing us with tips about getting around and what to see. We chose this hotel because it's not in the center, which can be very noisy at night, and because we knew it would have air conditioning. The only drawback to the location is that it's a 10-15 minute walk to the main part of town where all the action (and restaurants) are found. You do get a bit weary trekking back and forth. The only other issue was that my partner got food poisoning from the chicken sandwich he ordered for lunch in the bar. It was undercooked and laid him low for 24 hours. But the breakfasts we had there were great.

They guided us on how to find parking for our car, and we opted to use the valet service for about $15, which was very convenient. Upon arrival, the receptionist was friendly and welcoming. The on-site restaurant was nice, offering great food, and the staff was amazing. Our room had a charming hacienda feel and was clean and comfortable. The hotel's location is fantastic, very close to the center of Guanajuato with access to nice restaurants and wonderful churches. You wish you could stay in someone's historic home in the city's centro district. Look no further than La Casona de Don Lucas Hotel.  This 18th century home was updated and converted to a small boutique hotel.  It has the modern conveniences but is still a little rough around the edges to maintain its charm.  Walk out onto the balcony see history in all directions. Out the front door you can walk to all the attractions and beauty you've come to see, and the traditions you've come to experience, and the foods you want to taste. Our room slept four with the main bed on the third floor, and two double beds in a loft with a small table. Just like 15th century, there are no elevators so pack light.  The decor was basic but functional. All three beds were very comfortable. There was plenty of drawer and closets if you need it. There's a couple small sitting areas. Unlike the 15th century, the hotel offers decent internet. The room was mostly clean with the exception of the bathroom which our Room Attendant went above and beyond to try to remedy. Generally, we found the staff to be friendly. Service is on par for a three star hotel. You will normally get what you ask for, but not anticipated. For example, we had a room which slept four on two floors, and only one refillable water bottle and two glasses were provided.   Breakfast was included with our room rate.  It's limited but solid. Chilaquiles, eggs, chicken Milanese strips, frijoles, lentils, and a selection of sliced fruits, breads and pastries. All you need to get out the door.  You are in the center of it all so your room won't be silent.  That means the last thing you hear before nodding off are bells of Basílica Colegiata de Nuestra Señora de Guanajuato which chime on the quarter hour and bells that count the hours at the top of each hour.  These are the first things you will likely hear when you first wake up along with the street coming back to life.   There is no valet Parking and self parking is about a 12 minutes walk away through the centro streets and tunnels. On arrival, someone from the hotel rode over with us and walked us back.  On check-out another gentleman was happy to bring the car.  We would stay again.  The location is excellent.  It's historic and has character.  The rooms are spacious, and we liked the staff.  The hotel is also priced right.

However, they only give you one key and you need it for electricity, which means you cannot leave things charging when you leave the room or the ac on and it's super hot and takes a long time to cool off when you come back to the room. I had chilaquiles verdes for breakfast and they didn't come with eggs or any meat, too simple and not satisfying. The sink is too shallow and water splashes everywhere. Shower door wouldn't close and the bathroom floor got all wet when we took showers. They were very attentive and had complimentary snacks in room.
