This was the cleanest, most stylish and spiffiest hotel for a budget traveler. My room was very cozy and comfortable. I was on a multi-country trip and I was exhausted coming straight from Gatwick airport! I was eager to get out and about but I chose to crawl into the sumptuously cushy bed and crash. When I awoke the next day I felt so rested. How should I describe my room? It was inspiring. Why? Because the carpet was blue. The beds had fresh high count linens. The blankets weren't the cheap icky stitched brocade things you see normally. They were cloth blankets. I had two beds in my room. The drapes were colorful and cheery. The bathroom was large. The bathtub/shower was large.
One night I decided to eat at the hotel's restaurant. I ordered the fish and chips. The best fish and chips I've ever had. The fish was fried with fine meal coating. Crispy on the outside. Juicy and meaty on the inside. It was like buttah. I ate the whole thing.
Why are fish and chips so different in the U.S.? They use cod here. It leaves a dry texture in the fried fish. I asked around to see if the fish I had in the UK was different. Someone said the fish may have been Plaice fish.
Upon research, I found that Plaice fish is found in the waters around the UK. Bummer. Since I've never had Plaice before or since, I can't say for sure that is what I had. It was a winner.
Oh, the little shops and restaurants around the hotel are totally awesome. Not far from London by train.
I wish I could go back. read more
