This review is for Brookdale on Jones Maltsberger…read more Before deciding to place a loved one at this facility, please read this review and look up "lawsuits against Brookdale Senior Living." This is a Type B facility, meaning it should be able to provide 24/7 care for residents with limited mobility. My mom stayed here only a little over a month and experienced what we believe was neglect along with verbal and financial abuse. Shortly after moving in, she suffered an injury that left her barely able to walk due to severe pain. We quickly learned this facility could not provide the compassionate and attentive care they claimed they could. During this time, Brookdale leadership suggested hospice and convinced me, while I was emotionally distraught, to add medication dispensing and grooming services. I left that meeting emotionally drained with an additional $1,000 added to my mother's monthly bill believing she would receive the care she needed. I was wrong and looking back, the experience felt predatory. Most second shifts (2-10 p.m.) had only two caregivers for the facility and no supervisor present. Even during first shift, caregivers appeared overwhelmed and rushed. If my mother was asleep, meals were sometimes left out of her reach. I once found Desitin in her toothbrush, and one weekend, she was left in the same nightgown from Friday through Sunday. She often waited 1-2 hours for call requests to be answered, and one night her call went unanswered for six hours. If she had fallen or experienced a medical emergency, help may not have arrived in time. The final turning point came when a caregiver verbally intimidated my mother for using her call button. While my mother was in pain in bed, the caregiver leaned over her and told her to stop pressing the button because they had many other residents to care for and "everyone pays for extra services." After this, my mother became afraid to ask for help during second shift. Her hospice nurse later told me the staff could not care for her appropriately and recommended a personal care home instead. I moved my mother out as quickly as possible. She is now thriving in a personal care home where she is treated with dignity and respect, something that was severely lacking during our experience at Brookdale on Jones Maltsberger. I did not immediately report the verbal abuse because my mother feared retaliation while she still lived there. Instead, I focused on getting her somewhere safe. The fact that she feared retaliation at all says a great deal about the environment there. I have since submitted detailed reports to authorities and included contact information for family, friends, and clinicians who witnessed these issues. Because Brookdale could not adequately care for her, I obtained a support letter from the hospice physician requesting a 14-day notice instead of the full 30 days. The Executive Director rejected this request, insisting the facility could meet her needs despite the serious issues occurring during second shift. I also asked them to consider refunding at least part of the $2,000 community fee my mother paid given she was barely there a month and left under these circumstances, but this was also rejected. Additionally, despite revoking authorization for automatic withdrawals, Brookdale still attempted to withdraw a large disputed amount that would have placed my mom at a deficit if I hadn't already placed a stop payment on Brookdale. I was present at this facility almost daily and my mother was still verbally abused and neglected. I worry deeply about residents who are even more vulnerable because not everyone has someone to advocate for them the way I could for my mother. No family should ever have to wonder whether their loved one is being ignored, humiliated, or left to suffer behind a very costly closed door.

Cue the cliche "if I could rate them less than one star I would" but this is where we are. Our…read morehistory with the Waterford warrants this as a credible review since our loved one has been here for many years. I wish I could say it's going well but after many chances with (MANY owners) it seems as though they have run out of chances with us. While marketed as a "gated community" the gate is no longer working and has not been for many months. So now it is left open, all of the time, which completely defeats its purpose in leading people to believe it is a gated community. This property has a tendency of gas lighting it's residents. One issue comes up and upon asking the front desk about the issue they immediately manage to turn it around on the resident and how THEY have problems with something that resident is doing. Now had they brought that completely irrelevant issue up prior to this conversation we might have taken them seriously. Instead, they practically used their 'problem' to eliminate our own concerns. It has become evident that their (unprofessional) defense mechanism is to make their residents' family feel crazy for having ANY issues with the Waterford. The current ownership is complicit in furthering the unprofessional communication and agreeing with the ridiculous treatment of its residents. I anticipate going into more detail soon but for the interim this review is to warn anyone thinking about placing their loved ones in this place. If you *truly love* your family member I urge you to not place them in such toxic care. Over the last year it has become clear to us which direction the Waterford is heading and because of that we have every intention of removing our loved one from this place as soon as humanly possible.

Best move the family ever made - the friendly Waterford staff have helped improve the quality of her life immeasurably. She enjoys the activities, game sessions, local outings, shopping excursions, music events, and their extensive library. She has made a ton of new friends here and the value of that alone cannot be underestimated. Waterford on Huebner is smack dab in the middle of San Antonio's hospital / medical district, and that is not only a great comfort health wise - but if there are any citywide power outages, the hospital district gets top energy priority. We have shared meals at Waterford on Huebner with her and the chow is great! But top marks really go to the staff for their friendly welcome to family and residents. Highest possible recommendation - * * * * *

My mom stayed in the Health Center for a few days for respite care so I could go out of town for…read morethe weekend. So, this review is not for the assisted living campus, which was absolutely gorgeous. The Health Center is at the far end of campus and looks like a typical nursing facility building. The good: *It was covered by my mom's VA benefits *the staff was super friendly *It was clean *It was secure *As soon as my LO started exhibiting wandering behaviors, they put a "wander bracelet " around her ankles a warning alarm would go off if she got too close to one of the doors. *They are thorough when it comes to instructions about medications *They will call you and maintain good communication if there are any issues while you are away. The bad: *The Health Center is, for all intents and purposes, a nursing facility, and as all such facilities these says, they are likely understaffed and have to put some of their late stage memory patients in the hallway if they are wheelchair bound, for supervision purposes (Its better than them sitting in their room without supervision) I say this only so that you are prepared if you are a first timer *It is sometimes difficult to get anyone to answer the phone until my mom was actually in the facility. The receptionist will forward you to the Health Center but anytime you try to leave a message the phone disconnects as soon as the voicemail message "beeps". Once my LO was admitted, all I had to tell the receptionist was that my mom was a patient and I needed to talk to the nurses station. *If you dont have EVERYTHING labeled with your loves ones name, and I mean EVERYTHING... you will bring your loved one home with 1/2 of what they came with. I imagine this is typical when you have a loved one with memory issues. They wander into rooms not knowing if it is their room and commence to get undressed for bed , and when a staff member discovers them, how are they supposed to know what needs to go back in their actual room when they are escorting your LO back? Lesson learned. That could be one reason. But it could also be the other way around... perhaps other patients wander into your LOs room and pick up things thinking they belong to them. Whatever the reason... for a temporary (respite) stay - label everything and leave instructions for the staff to call you if they find anything after you leave.

This place was for her complete recovery from pneumonia as well as for her physical and occupational therapy. From the time I discovered from research that this place ranks No. 1 amongst skilled nursing facilities in town, to my preliminary phone exchange with their admissions director Jo Ann, to my Mom's 1st day onwards under the most caring and loving staff, I knew that this institution was Mom's Christmas gift for her great faith in God. Mom had the most amazing and loving care from the whole staff at Unit 7. We spent Christmas and New Year's here. They even made my stay as comfortable as possible by giving me a cot as well as a small table and corner to do my work while being in Mom's company. I strongly encourage one and all who have been in any way blessed by this institution to please share your experience here on Yelp! Morningside is hands down a Godsend! It is No. 1 in my list of nursing facilities based on my own online research as well as personal experience. And so, as Mom bids farewell to this amazing 'home', we thank Rosella, and Unit 7's amazing LVNs and CNAs, as well as Mom's PTs and OTs. Kudos to y'all! We love you!!!

During her time there, there were long stretches where no one checked on her unless we went to the nurses' station ourselves. Losing her is already hard, but knowing she spent her final days feeling ignored hurts even more. The nursing staff is Overstretched with being assigned too many patients and all are recovering from major surgery. Your loved one will have to wait for meds and if the Doctor hasn't ordered stronger meds all they will give you is weak Tylenol. When we checked in the nurses assistant were trying to pull my mom off the transport chair so the guy could leave. When I came in is when they finally put on the gate belt and the walker so she can steady herself. They will often forget to put on the gate belt. There are no hand rails on the beds, to use to prop yourself up. , our room was to have a directory and it took them 3 days before we received one. . The fridge in the room did not cool, I had to ask for a lamp from an empty room, and since I was staying with my mom, they offered me a cot but took them 2 days to find one. The therapy is to be 7 days a week both OT and PT. After the first evaluation. We were told the next day my mom would have one therapy in spite of their policy showing that it's two. Today. 12/22 she received zero therapy. When I called the director of therapy ( A PTA not a PT) he kept insinuating that I was lying, my mom was lying and that she was scheduled for therapy with Keisha. When I asked how he was planing to make up the difference for this miss, he kept insisting that he had my mom on the schedule continuously interrupting me and never apologizing , still continuing to defend his staff also while mentioning that he was having dinner with his son. When the previous day he mentioned to call him day or night. This is stating to be a resort of world class lies and 0 empathy for the patients they serve. Skip this and try to get your loved ones in acute care.
