I've been dealing with chronic pain for most of my life. Several months ago, a new problem cropped up in my dominant arm, preventing me from working or doing basic household chores. My chiropractor helped and it got better, but then this winter it came back with a vengeance. To avoid seeing a physical therapist for this problem, plus a chiropractor for my old pain, I decided to try Holistic Health Center and address everything at once. Covid makes me extremely conscious of how many appointments I'm making and how much risk I'm taking. I wanted to minimize exposure, maximize care. As soon as I walked into the main building HHC occupies, I was faced with a receptionist wearing a mask improperly (aka dick nose). She sent me down a hall towards the right waiting room and along the way, I passed a room with a few professionals in scrubs chatting, unmasked. Then I passed a woman in the hall who also presented dick nose. When I finally reached the right reception desk, two women sat there, one with her mask on her chin. She greeted me and asked how I was doing. I said I'd be better if everyone had a mask on. She said "Oh" and covered up. I sat there waiting about half an hour for my appointment, which seems like too long for a chiropractor during Covid, even if everyone had been wearing a mask properly. Meanwhile, the other receptionist who had been masked pulled hers down to talk bare-faced to the dick nose lady from the hallway, who was also sporting her mask on her chin. They talked for quite some time, then the receptionist proceeded to take phone calls while still unmasked. I started to panic. Eventually, I got up and walked out, passing receptionist B, still on the phone, her face uncovered. I was gutted I wasn't getting the care I so desperately needed but I decided pain was better than getting Covid. After driving another 45 minutes home, which aggravated my pain, I left a Google review citing my experience and, at a healthcare administrator friend's urging, filed a complaint with the state. I received an immediate response to my Google review promising they would investigate and swearing they uphold the protocols they obviously do not. Later, I got a call from receptionist A asking if I was ok and why I'd fled the office. I called her back and told her the truth: I left because I was afraid and appalled. I explained I've been in pain for months and needed this care but instead have to choose between treatment and my safety. She apologized in a very general, customer-service way. She kindly dismissed me, in other words, with a vague comment on how she didn't know who else I saw mask-less, as if her desk mate hadn't been sitting right next to her with a naked face. I told her "apology not accepted." Wearing masks is basic protocol and they should be honoring that. I also informed her I'd filed a complaint with the state. It's really unfortunate I had to waste so many hours seeking care I didn't get, then take the time to hold accountable negligent healthcare staff, all because these professionals dedicated to helping sick people refuse to cover their damn faces. read more
