She starts by giving you some basic information, explains the basic cocktail formula, then sets you free to make your own creation, helping everyone along the way. We went to Devin's Mixology 101 class last night. We had a blast. It was a pretty intimate group of 14, and the class allows for interaction and getting to know everyone. Devin has incredible energy, and makes her own mixers and bitters. She has fresh herbs and flowers to pick right from the plants and muddle (she also taught us the proper way to muddle). She encourages attendees to experiment with liquors that may not be your usual go-to, and I made a pretty delicious whiskey cocktail, if I say so myself. The class is on a rooftop in Ukrainian Village, and the view of Chicago's skyline in just breathtaking. Hollow Leg offers other classes and private parties. We (bachelorette party) mixed up our time, ended up showing up two hours late (10:00pm instead of 8:00pm...it was bad) but Devin still not only taught the class, but could not have been more gracious and friendly about it. It is very hands-on: go select your base liquor and then your mixers. She makes all her mixers and bitters from scratch! She teaches you when to add your ice and when/how to shake or stir. My boyfriend surprised me with Hollow Leg's Mixology class last weekend, and we are still talking about it. Devin was a great teacher, extremely charismatic and she has such an interesting background. Because the weather was so nice in Chicago, she hosted it on her phenomenal rooftop in Ukrainian Village (with one of the best skyline views I've ever seen!). The class was really free-flowing, and we were able to experiment with lots of different alcohols, sweeteners, flavors, and bitters. There were three other couples who also took the class, and despite being strangers to begin with - the group synergy was incredible! So far, we've already recommended it to many of our close family members and friends, as it's a class anyone (who is at least 21 years old) would love. It was totally worth the price for the value. I attended a private cocktail-making class organized as part of a bachelor party and it was awesome! Devin was an excellent hostess and her rooftop spot in the Ukrainian Village was super nice with amazing reviews. Devin really knows her stuff, and we had lot of fun learning from her and then taking a crack at making our own cocktails with Devin's bitters, syrups, herbs, and fruit at our disposal. I have to admit, however, that the best part of the evening was having Devin turn my sub-par creation into a first-class cocktail with just a quick taste and a few minor alterations. We were 8 guys with varying interests in mixology, and Devin did a great job reading the group and creating a great balance between hands-on learning and hanging out/drinking. And the venue/atmosphere was so nice that even the guy who just wanted to sit back and enjoy a whiskey on the rocks couldn't complain. All in all I would highly recommend Devin to anyone interested in mixology, regardless of what type of event you're planning - I'm hoping to bring my wife back the next time we are in Chicago! read more

We had a work function last night and it was a fantastic time. It starts off very education and by about 45 minutes in you are running around making your own cocktails. I love that most every ingredient is locally sourced and/or home made. Devin also hustles her behind off making sure that everyone is successful in making their cocktails, teaching you where you went wrong, and encouraging you step out of the box. The cocktails are plenty strong so I was in a very happy space by the end of the night. Also, the views were stellar, both before and after the sun went down. I'd definitely plan another event here. We had 24 people, there was still plenty of space, and I had tons of people telling me what a great time they had before they left. Several were already trying to plan out a second event. Devin is a lovely host and I think is running a brilliant business. Last, to comment on the one less than perfect post, it's true that you aren't seeing "top shelf" alcohol but Devin explains everything as she goes and why she does what she does. In the end, the drinks taste delicious and you can tell a lot of effort was put into the event. It's definitely worth the money and really not much more than you'd end up paying at a bar for four craft cocktails. read more

I was amazed to learn how much science goes into mixology, and pleasantly surprised at the drinks I was able to create. We each made custom cocktails (from scratch, not following a recipe) using unique mixers and an amazing selection of bitters and tinctures, which I was impressed to learn are hand-made by Devin. Oh my gosh, I literally cannot say enough fantastic things about Devin and the events she does with Hollow Leg, but I'll try to narrow it to my top 5. #1 - Devin exudes an infectious positive energy and is the epitome of "good vibes". After a nine-hour corporate 'retreat' in our office, from which my colleagues were completely drained, I was concerned there would be no hope for our evening event. I shouldn't have ever doubted Devin. She got people up out of their seats, laughing, acting silly and bonding. #2 - She personalizes and customizes each experience and can adapt to your specific event. I've worked with her on two very different - but both high stakes - events and she's been marvelous. #3 - pricing is so reasonable, considering she brings everything with her including alcohol (or at least, that was the arrangement for our events) #4 - her workshops DO NOT require alcohol, but she teaches you great things along the way about the booze, whether you imbibe or not. She can do low-proof and no-proof workshops! #5 - Devin is an overall remarkable human. The world would be a better place with more Devins! Devin is a fantastic instructor. She is very passionate and able to connect with you no matter what your skill level. If you want to have a great time this is the place to go. Not only are the classes wonderful, if the weather is nice and your class is on the roof top you will have one a terrific view of the Chicago skyline. My first ever yelp review! But I HAD to give Hollow Leg a shout. Went for a bachelorette party. At first we were nervous because it's in a home. Felt kinda strange to walk into someone's living room. But Devon immediately made us feel comfortable. She's so knowledgeable but more importantly, she's SO passionate. You get let loose to make drinks... but she's right there if you need it to taste and advise and give history. At one point she sat up on the counter and everyone just surrounded and asked questions.
