Contemporary art & theatre in a wonderful setting…read more Went west to catch a highly rated play "Cain & Abel" which whilst disturbing was a revelation. But this isn't a review of the play, the theatre space was fantastic (an aisle on the right of the stage would be handy as you have to hop over other patrons legs), seating a lot but every seat with a view. Stage massive and could suit large productions. Gallery space downstairs fantastic with a number of rooms able to show works by different artists. Again a great use of an old building's space. Bar a little ordinary with one red & 2 whites to choose from & your standard fare, wine only average at $8 a glass. Wonderful space I'll be visiting again.

All the "cool kids" would break in to throw rocks at the window, or so my cool older sister would tell me. I was too busy at trombone practice. Newly renovated to resemble a New York loft, the substation is opened for business. Ideal for many functions, current uses are performances, art shows and markets. I do believe they can host wedding, though I'm not sure they have kitchen facilities. All in all, it's a modern building with multiple uses. The only (major) downfall is there is no aircon. Meaning during summer it can and does get extremely hot. And for that reason, it's 3, not 4 stars.

A quaint little shop with a broad take on its theme, Alice & Co is a self-proclaimed "purveyor of…read morelanguage and other wonders". Locally themed and published books, prints of classical illustrations, postcards, notebooks and other literary themed art are all displayed on dark wood tables and bookshelves. There's a whole shelf of different Alice in Wonderland illustrations on postcards in pigeon holes for $2.50 each, but not everything in the shop is directly associated with Lewis Carrol novel. Small prints of fairy tale stills and tarot deck illustrations go for between $15 and $30 each, it's a good place to stock up on things for your walls that aren't just band posters stripped from poles around Melbourne. Alice & Co also plays host to exhibits from illustrators, readings and book launches, as well as classes in humanities and languages. It's also been known to host puppet theatre. The proprietor is friendly and obliging, and lovers of literature will enjoy the general feel of the place.

The small space is quaint and cosy but after a while in Alice & Co, it was time to move on, a coffee just around the corner finished off the visual feast. Alice & Co host a range of Book Launches / Openings, Exhibitions and even runs some classes for languages and social sciences.

These are not knock off prints and you won't find dodgy rip offs of the art spotted at The Cullen down the road that contestants of reality TV series seem to favour (not cool). This is a Melbourne art lovers paradise. With many of the works we've come to know and love adorned on our street walls and pasted up in laneways, Signed & Numbered is one of the few places you can actually find printed works from these local street artists. Ghostpatol, Kaffiene et al. All prints are available as-is or framed. Buying a framed print from here is the most affordable option with prices very reasonable compared to taking it to a separate framer. But it's always nice to have the option. Awesome spot for putting the finishing touches on your living space or finding a really unique gift.

This is a cool place to visit and flick through high quality street art at a relatively affordable price. The majority of the works are limited edition prints that come with a signed certificate of authenticity from the artist. The editions usually run to 10 prints per image therefore maintaining a high level of exclusivity. Signed and Numbered currently display 10 - 15 different artists that are related by their medium (illustration, print, etchings) and their works have a distinct surreal street vibe that wouldn't be out of place in a Frankie magazine. Unique etchings can be bought for as little as $35 or $70 framed. The larger prints range from $150-$400 dependant upon framing.

We were lucky enough to attend a salon with Patti Smith there a few years back and man was I blown away. She was touring at the time and the centre was showing a collection of photographs of Smith's things taken by a documentary film maker that had been documenting her work. The large room there was the perfect place to chill on the floor and absorb the work while Smith regaled us with stories of her artistic and personal life. It's something I'll never forget. What was even cooler was that when we were leaving, Patti cruised past in the back of a car, wound down the window and said hello. We thanked her for being amazing and she bid us a great afternoon. Check this space out. It looks a little serious from the outer, but it's a treasure trove of corners and little maze-like rooms inside.

Often are three exhibitions on at this gallery at any time, two small exhibitions and one large exhibition in the main gallery space. The CCP is a not-for-profit gallery aimed at exhibiting photography and education. The photographs on exhibition are not for sale, although there is a small shop in the reception area that does sell photography books and Lomo cameras. The elegantly designed gallery is wheelchair accessible, unlike so many of Melbourne's galleries. Photo based art has changed in the last decade; there are a lot more video art on exhibition and the exhibitions have become noisy with video soundtracks mixing together in the spiraling space of the CCP galleries.

As it turns out, the Incube8r woman won some kind of business model award for this place because the concepts are so sound and the place just took off. It's the sort of thing you expect in Tokyo where space is at the biggest premium. But rather than people sleeping in drawers here, people show their art and craft wares in various sized boxes and booths. You get so much crammed in to the space that shopping becomes this little exploration mission and you can spend hours rifling through clever people's creations. The prices are reasonable also (for both goods and space), so it's a must-go for birthday/Christmas shopping if you're a bit in the dark for ideas. There are so many variants in terms of style and aesthetic here, you really can't go far wrong.

I like to support local jewelers and a get a really unique piece rather than mass-produced jewelery. And so I stopped at Incube8r Gallery because I knew that they specialize in the work of local jewelers, designers and crafts people. Incube8r Gallery is meant to be a bit of a business incubator for local designers, hence the name of the gallery. There are all these little cabinets and other display areas where each designer features their work and I'm looking at each of them trying to find something that would suit C's style. No, good but not C's style, oh! I like those cuff-links, not for C but for me. And it kept on happening, lots of good jewelery but nothing that was just right for C. and so many items that I really liked. I had to keep on reminding myself that I was shopping for C's birthday present and not for me. It was totally unexpected and in the end I couldn't resisted and bought myself a badge. It wasn't expensive so I can still afford to buy something C really nice for birthday.

I would not have known that this little tucked away gallery would have existed if it was not for…read morethe recent Melbourne Fringe Festival. There was a piece of art created by Antonia Goodfellow that sparked people's attention, yet it was so simple once one entered the gallery. The show was called "Consilience - We All Jump Together" comprising of a large scale sculptural item that makes people think long and hard about the natural world, however the construction is synthetic. This piece of art comprised of a rubbery artificial stimulation and super magnification of the micro-universe visualised through the use of recycled materials, with another piece of art. I have lost re-collection of the second piece of art. Two minutes later I leave the gallery as there is nothing else to look at, although who can really complain as it was free to enter and observe. Although simple and dullish looking; no doubt a lot of work was put into this artificial masterpiece. Prior to observing and touring the gallery (albeit briefly) it was great to connect with someone who is so passionate about the arts after all; the attending art assistant who is also a chef. Interesting, although I would not head back in a hurry unless there was more art to see and appreciate.

This inconspicuous gallery on King st is an artist run project space that displays..........art? Is…read moreit art? What is art? The exhibition opening I attended was a series of performances by conceptual artists utilising various mediums including a loud distorted free styling keyboard player and people drawing on each other, I get there's a concept but not so sure I can appreciate it. Obviously each exhibition will vary and opinion is subjective however the vibe of this gallery feels decidedly on the cultural fringe and boundary pushing art is the norm here. The gallery consists of several white walled rooms and artists' studios on the floors above. Being used to free booze at openings I wasn't overly impressed that they were selling Bowlers Run wine ($2.80 a bottle at Dan Murphys) for $4 a cup at the opening. Guess they got to pay rent somehow.
