Having been there before it moved sites a few years ago was quite surprised to see a lot of the things are still the same as they were 10 odd years ago. It is fun but not good if you want to chill while the kids play. There is a small cafe attached which is ok, serves decent coffee. They do lots of different demonstrations and shows through out the day aimed at different age groups. There is also a small gift shop. Worth a visit.

A round at Cruden Bay is probably one of the rounds you will never forget. This seaside course can…read morebe incredibly difficult if the weather isn't on its best behavior (which it seldom is in Scotland). Some of the holes border on ridiculous and it will eat you up if you aren't at the top of your game. But this is a tremendous course, that most people will enjoy playing even if it means shooting a less attractive score than you might usually. It is claimed that golf was played in the village of Cruden Bay as early as 1791. The original course, on the present site, was commissioned by the Great North of Scotland Railway (GNSR) following the expansion of the railways at the end of the 19th century, designed by Old Tom Morris of St Andrews, and opened in 1899. Cruden Bay offers an internationally famous golfing experience - old fashioned links golf at its best - on one of the best links courses in Scotland, and last year was placed at No 52 in the world by "Golf Magazine". I have also heard that this was the course that Herb Kohler played and inspired him to create Whistling Straits in Koher, Wisconsin. Hope to return.

The kids (2& 5) liked the whole experience and especially the talking cactus, and stamping the special medal for £1.01ea. The whole afternoon - good value. We left a generous donation as we had spent a lovely afternoon and have some cakes home with us for tomorrow. PS The cream for the excellent scones was proper whipped cream!

Ahh, sunny days in Aberdeen at Duthie Park. One of the best…read morethings about living in Scotland was how much people appreciated the sun. It's out less, so when it is people go crazy. Shirts off (even though it's still pretty chilly), picnics, dog walks, everyone shows up in Duthie Park for an ice cream. Glorious. Some seriously fond memories of Sunday afternoons spent with friends in Duthie Park. There's a huge amount of nicely trimmed grass for sitting or kicking a football around or throwing a frisbee. There's great paved paths for walking your dog or letting your kid ride their bike. There's also multiple play areas for children and some of them are really awesome. Notably the playground with a zip line (how fancy!--disclosure: I would wait around and try to get a go when kids weren't on it) and a roundabout (you never see those in playgrounds anymore!) and some pretty tall slides. There is a greenhouse garden full of exotic plants and loads of cacti that you can check out for free, which is a fun activity on a colder day. And there is an ice cream shop in that same area, which is of course great for those cherished warm, sunny summer days in Scotland. Overall Duthie Park is a very well-rounded area, with plenty of green space and a great place to spend some time with the whole family. I love going back when I'm back visiting Aberdeen.

It was my 3rd fave experience in Scottish football but only because my fave Scottish team (Celtic) got a narrow and thrilling win. One of my most memorable nights watching Celtic for sure. Then when I was on tour here in 2011, the morning after the night of my concert, I went to relive the memories and walk around the stadium. I noticed that it hasn't changed a bit. It's still huge, it's still intense, but it badly needs a makeover and perhaps to have the corners filled in. Maybe that will happen soon. If it does, this grand old stadium from the 19th century could earn the 5th star that I want to give it. So when I was doing my first tour of Scotland in 2011, I also hit up every single stadium in the country. My obsession with footy (soccer to Americans) is the reason. Every stadium review - like all my reviews - are based on first-hand personal experience, usually from multiple visits. So watch this space! *** return to regular review *** The grand home of Aberdeen FC way up by the ocean in NE Scotland, this 1899 stadium holds 21k and is one of the biggest in Scotland with a fierce support. It was the first all-seater stadium in the UK. It's the 3rd largest stadium being used by a top club. It has a cool granite facade. They might move to a new stadium but that would be a tragedy really since this one is so good. It's 15 mins from the city centre on foot and Briony has been there. it's an expensive ticket. It could be better atmosphere-wise if the corners were filled in but it's one of the better stadiums in the country. It's very close to the sea which makes it absolutely freezing.
