Let's back up for a minute and reminisce back to 1987. I have also graduated from Hollywood High School. Wow, 39 years ago. This review is mostly a graduation that I have attended on the 6th of June.. this year. One of my friends' grandchild and her sister who are twins also graduated from this lovely, beautiful, historic, ancient school that I adore and is SO near and dear to my heart. Yes, until today. Those great years, moments will never be forgotten. And they shouldn't. The school was divided into many different buildings. From their Science building, to Dance, English, Math, to the Martial Arts building. Just to name a few. They also hold different activities at this school when school is out. Like meetings, different types of celebrations inside their fairly large auditorium. The level of education is pretty good. So is their curriculum. When we graduated, we graduated at the iconic Hollywood Bowl. I thought that they stopped doing it, but the tradition is still the same. I remember we had to do a lot of fundraising in order to graduate at the Bowl. It was very exciting. Graduation was packed with a lot of students giving their speeches, along with their staff members. It went pretty smoothly.. We were sitting on the bleachers and could hardly see the ceremony. Thank God for the TVs on both sides of the bowl and the loud speakers. The Hollywood Bowl as some of us know, has different sections for merchandise, concession stands and plenty of restrooms. A lot of my favorite celebrities also attended this school back in the days. Like John Ritter, Judy Garland & Lana Turner. Just to name a few. If you want to sign your child up for this school, no need to look anywhere else. Highly recommend! Parking is at the Hollywood Bowl. Go Sheiks! That was our mascot and still remains the same. Love the school's dance programs! Location is convenient, and staff id always friendly! This time around, I came for a dance performance! I was blown away by the dancers, and the organization of the performance! The performing arts magnet always has something going on, and I love that they keep the students inspired and connected! I do wish they would figure out a parking structure, because sometimes the gates are closed and it's hard for parents and family to park when there's an event we're there to see! One other thing that could be a nice addition is concessions. There usually aren't many things to buy food/beverage wise at the school's events, and with some of the events going on for hours, especially football games, I think more effort can be made in that area! When I went it was good at first my 9th grade year was decent music vibes but the other 3 years eh. I know why rotc left lack of funds but imagine how embarrassing it is to make a Lacrosse team that didn't even last a whole year. That fact that they have their reviews off from Google makes me laugh. That school is decent enough but it's nothing special. I did heard rotc is back LOL kinda felt bad for the good students back then who would have gotten decent help. read more

Located off N Highland Ave in Los Angeles. This high school had a lot of famous Hollywood stars that went there. I mainly wanted a pic of one of my fav actors John Ritter who got his mural on there after he passed thanks to Jimmy Kimmel who got them to do it. If you come to visit here on the weekend there is no access to go inside and parking is street. They did have the lot opened but they were charging 10 bucks not sure if there was something going on there or somewhere else and the lot was being used. Overall looks like a nice school. read more

If I attended this school, I would totally own spirit day! I'm a huge classic film fan and absolutely adore their mural to past notable students who have namely make their marks upon the entertainment industry. You can easily spot Lana Turner, Judy Garland, and so many more on the mural. Best of all, they are the Home of the Sheiks! Love it! Rudy would be proud. read more

Theres so much to Hollywood High..1st let's get the obvious out of the way.. the Education is bad..why lie, Its a easy school..in 2018 the calculated Average Standard Score was 65.39 and at 1 point acording to many students barely any homework was given. It's a Armenian vs Latino War.. even if the school doesn't accept it ..it is what is is.. also I've witnessed Armenian vs African Americans and I'm talking of big Group battles and the administration can't do anything about it. As everyone knows .. when it comes time to their scholarships and I'm talking about their Big Scholarships .. they're never given to the deserving but more to whoever had a rough life or experience in their foreign country. The school has a drug problem.. often students have šēx in the bungalows and bathrooms and dont mention in the back of the bleachers. The school looks old..it needs lots of remodeling and definitely a new paint job.. this school says we dont care with the look. Forget that past celebrities have attended this school even for 1 day or 2 and hollyweird will hold on to that. This school had a reputation for seeing counselors, Dean's and Staff hook up with students..everyone knows about it but instead of bringing that kind of attention to the school everyone just looks away. It definitely has a ditching problem with students jumping the fences or simply running out the doors or gates when no one is watching. It has the Performing Arts Magnet which is 2nd place to Hamilton Music Academy but definitely falls short because of bad funding and again because they dont care. The theater or drama department is really good but because they have to be..and most didnt make it to Hamilton so they settled here..again 2nd best. Their Sports department sorry to say this is awful! I believe they could have a amazing sports program if they recruited.. cause trust me..they have lots of tall, talented and Athletic students but they just won't join so they work with the ones that just want to try out.. they had a Amazing Athlete one by the name of Giasi Rivers..he was a 1 man team.. multi sports star and they let him fail..even though he got the attention of universities and news papers ..they let his talent go to waste. its the 1 school who wont have its graduation ceremony in the Auditorium, in another school or in their football field..they Graduate in the Hollywood Bowl and not everyone can say they graduated their so that's a privilege if you graduate because if you see..the graduation rate drops and it does not compare to the past. Theres not school rivalries ..the drill teams are always a mess and a joke to the school..its a shame. The name world famous Hollywood High School is just a name plain and simple.. the inside does not live to what the name should be. I went to the HHS Enrollment/Attendance Office this morning, and yesterday - in order to enroll my daughter for her 1st day of HS. The staff there was super awesome, and assisted me with the enrollment process with kindness - and it was the busiest day of the school year! No words can express the amount of gratitude I feel toward the staff, faculty, and the entire LAUSD! This past Wednesday my baby brother culminated his academic career at HHS, he's the 5th member of the family to attend this school and he did it with the highest honors; Gold Seal, Golden State Seal, and was also a member Superintendent's Honor Roll! He was part of the Performing Art Magnet program and is now on to the next chapter... PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITY!! Woooo! Thank you Ms.Lisa Goldstein, you gave my brother a stage and in doing so he found a home away from home. Thank you Mr. Bah for all those math lessons and over all kindness. The only reason why I gave it 2 stars was because we graduate at the Hollywood bowl. First of, I was born and raised in Hollywood. I came to Hollywood high 2007-2011. The education system is terrible and the counselors will do anything for students to drop out. I had many friends who told me that the counselors would advice them to drop out or go to a continuation school because they felt that they would not contribute anything to Hollywood high. Sadly during this time I was still young and wish I did more to make sure they did not drop out . By the senior year Mr Alvarado and Ms Ross kick out all the students and leave the "good ones" to graduate but provide no tools after graduation. You can easily pass the classes with just showing up The school is so easy to ditch and most "security" are flirtatious. I had them invite me to hotels and would provide liquor for me. Thinking about it now it is beyond disgusting. The staff so hook up with students and I feel like the Latino staff here treat their own people the worse. The only good teachers were Mr Payne and Papa. I did not learn anything from this school until I went to college you can easily graduate here with low Cs and Ds I cannot express how bad this school is and I won't ever plan to come here. It's very tragic that this school is in Hollywood blvd but no good education, staff are unprofessional and disgusting, and dangerous by all means. I am finally getting my bachelors degree but no thanks to Hollywood high I self motivated myself and did it on my own. Do yourself a favor don't bring your child here take them to a school where staff can help children pursue a higher education and have the tools to succeed. read more

Absolutely legendary spot. Anyone who is anyone and stepped to this spot. My personal favorite era of this spot was in the early Baker videos when everyone was killing the 12 stair. Sadly as of recently I have been becoming numb to tricks that have been going down it. I feel like now its become a bunch of LA dudes doing tricks down the 16 that I would have trouble with on a flat bar. Also I 30 years old have no business tossing my carcass down a 12/16 stair. I work on the same street as Hollywood High, and have never been impressed by the behavior the students exhibit when leaving the school, especially in regard to how they treat nearby businesses. Today, I was appalled. Three students cornered and assaulted me while I was out running errands for my job. The way the students acted was unacceptable, and when I went to their webpage to file a complaint, the contact page was disabled. I no longer trust walking in this area by myself, and it speaks volumes that the high schoolers pose the biggest threat...not the legions of homeless who also populate the area More like negative stars, they don't even deserve one. read more

The school has a long, storied history being this close to the epicenter of Hollywood. At times it can be a fun place to attend, but like all public schools it has it'd downsides. There are some teachers who really care, but others who really don't. Some will push you to do an assignment and do it right, others won't really care as long as they're not getting in trouble by your actions. For example I once had a biology teacher who made us write an assignment on Men In Black ! This was in a science class and not a theatre class!! I also had a Spanish teacher whose idea of getting us culturally intune with the Chicano/a culture was watching "Selena" - but of course to acctually "learn" we had it with English subtitles. The school also puts too much emphasis on the "magnet" students. It is a track school, but rumor has it is going "traditional" next year. The A track (magnets) get full run of the auditorium, meaning when they want it they can have it. There are two other tracks in this school who have to jump throught hoops for use of the auditorium. One teacher/sponsor of a school group wanted the auditorium for one night to have a "movie night" to build school spirit and he was denied use of the auditorium several times just because "magnet might have something planned". C and B track (B track especially, as C track boasts the "school for advanced studies") are at a serious disadvantage when it comes to use of the auditorium, band (it's only an A track class - B and C track have to "crosstrack" to take it, which is a pain in the you-know-what because you have to go to school daily when you should be on vacation to recieve credit), yearbook, journalism (which was only an A track class until Mr. Shue agreed to teach it on C track although I now hear he is going to another school.) and dance/dramatic arts. Cheer and Drill team are also at a very big financial disadvantage. Over the years Cheer & Drill (spirit squad) have recieved many trophies/awards/honors when the football team has been lucky to end the season with a .500 record (something they haven't done in a while!) yet they get the fancy busses(charter at times) when cheer, band, and drill (a large # of students) all have to squeeze on two tiny school busses Another issue I have with HHS is the administration. 95% of them are out of touch with the student body (Mr. Grijalva is the amazing 5% who is a councelor who acctually CARES about his students and gets to know them on a one to one basis). Others are just very out of touch and will only get involved with the student body when they feel the need to tell a student off. One of the plusses of Hollywood High School though is the graduation. We are the only school to graduate at the Hollywood Bowl, which is worth all of the suffering and lack of a good education that one may recieve at this school. read more

I'm 47 and this is my first school in USA. I'm learning English. It's so amazing to study in this old building in my age. There are wonderful teachers who genuinely love their work. But the vintage market that occurs every Saturday morning is an interesting blend of food trucks, random art / furniture dealers, and a cacophony of flea market vendors. You may find a book for $1, 2 tacos and a soda for $2, or a dusty velvet coat for $3. But it is a fun time! read more

I'll give this place an extra star just because it's my alma mater. As far as education goes, HHS ain't no créme de la créme of the schools in LAUSD. Sure, the teachers go by the syllabus and teach is what's required by state law, but where's the real education in that? By the end of my senior year, I don't recall any of my teachers trying to teach me about a thesis statement and researching proper evidence to put in an MLA bibliography. And I was going to college the next year! What a wake-up call that was. I was in the PAM program, so there was a whole buncha distractions for extra-curricular production, but that kinda hindered my education as well. Hmm. If I know HHS well enough, fights still go on in the Carl's Jr parking lot after school, the administrators don't know what they're doing, and the career advisers still line kids up for minimum wage jobs instead of skill-building for an actual career. Iv'e only been to this high school on two occasions, once for a baseball game and once for a middle school graduation. I can't say anything in regards to the actual educational aspect of the school because of this.The campus itself seems pretty decent. Both the auditorium and baseball field were very nice, spacious, and well kept. This high school is located right in the middle of Hollywood so if you are planning on visiting I warn you that finding parking is nearly impossible. This high school has a fully renovated football field and a solid indoor basketball gym. I've only come to use those two amenities so I don't have much more input beyond that. It isn't a new and/modern school with great architecture compared to other school in LA. I regret enrolling my child in this school. The counselor we have is rude who talks over a parent and will cut you off and then brush you off and will hang up on you. I left 2 messages with this counselor and never got a call back in 2 weeks, had to call the school the 3rd time and spoke to someone else. I'm a mother of 2 students that attend this school and I highly disagree with the way the school is brought down. If you really look at the big picture it's the student that makes itself, the discipline, morals, values, and all the ethics a parents teaches their kids it's what makes the student thrive for his future and his goals to be achieved once in high school.It doesn't matter what school it is, if you teach your kids right then all the choices they make will pay off at the end. Sure there's the pressure of all the drugs and drinking and ugly surroundings and bad people but if the student is going to make a wrong choice sure he has a consequence to face and that is what's going to make him or her think. I think we as parents shouldn't put all the responsibility on the teachers and schools for results our own kids decide to make. The sole foundation of a students future is at home. The education and all the values learned at home will be the ones to make a student of tomorrow full of achievements and dreams that will come true for him/her. A good student will conquer at any school whether it be a private, public, home studies, magnet, or gifted if he was taught well he will succeed no matter what. Please accept my apologies if any one is offended by my comments. I've been attending Evans Adult School (at their Hollywood HS campus) for almost a year now, and from the second I got here I've only had good things to say. The teachers are very helpful and encouraging when it comes down to you and your work. If you have any questions there's always someone around to answer them or let you know where to go to get them answered. My counselor has been nothing but supportive, always letting me know I can do it and that I'll be graduating in no time as long as I don't stop. I don't attend this school during high school hours since I am part of the Adult School Program so there are young and old adults of all nationalities, it's very diverse. At night the soccer field is usually open as well, so you could come by and watch games or even play some ball, and train on the field if you're an athlete. I have learned time management, how to make a resume and i'm currently learning so much about our health with the Health class that I am taking. If you're looking for a school to finish what you need to finish, I personally think Evans Adult School is a great option, though like any school there are downfalls as well. Give the school room for improvement and let them know what they need to improve in. If we don't attend then they'll never know, because it's going to be different for everyone.
