A lot of great tips and tools provided to help isolate and work on specific mechanics. Allyson is the best. I am training for my first triathlon and knew my swimming needed help. I booked beginner triathlon lessons with her and felt so much stronger even after just my first lesson! She gave me swimming tips that made sense and were easy to understand and follow. Allyson is easy going, attentive, and approachable. I have so many good things to say about Allyson Baily of Aqua Fit. I will just say this She is the treasure of the Culver City plunge. I take the deep water class on Saturday's at 11:00 AM, she has all the props and weight belts that fit all sizes already waiting. As we all make our way in the pool she has music on loud and she starts the class and always demonstrates move for newbies. Allyson walks the walk and talks the talk She is very fit herself and is always learning new moves for the pool. Never ever a dull day in the pool. The great thing about this class you can go at your own pace, and a pool workout is a gentle workout you just have the resistance of the water. All shapes and sizes are welcome. I was just checking to see when Ali's Aqua Stand-Up class was going to start up again after loving a class I took with a friend in 2018 and realized I'd never left a review! My friend and I swim at the Culver City Plunge frequently and we met Ali during a swimathon two summers ago where she invited us to try out her stand-up paddleboard. Our legs were shaking immediately and that was just on the pool deck! Ali told us about her class but it took us a few months to work up the courage to try it. It was definitely a challenging class (think pilates, yoga, and HIIT on a paddle board in the pool - including burpees!) but so much fun. It's definitely a little different than a causal standard stand-up paddle session. I was sore for a few days after! We arrived early and Ali gave us a demo of how to stand on the boards, how to best utilize the bands, and the proper form for holding the paddles. The boards are attached by a line to the deck and also to the other class member's boards. Everyone else in the class was super friendly and welcoming. We both wore lap suits and bike shorts as you're mostly on top of the board. I can't wait to try this class again! read more

Survived my first deep water aerobics class taught by Allyson today. It was so tough yet fun. The one hour class was only $11 and we swam so many laps, used barbells, ran in place, and it all went by so fast. Such a great cardio workout with great music! I have been going to Allyson's classes for years, and I have nothing but good things to say. Absolutely the best Aqua Fit deep water classes! I've been to similar classes elsewhere, but they're not close to the experience of these classes. Allyson has a wonderful mix of humor, encouragement and motivation that make her classes uniquely enjoyable while being a legit workout, regardless of your fitness level. The music selections are great and easily heard throughout the large pool area, and the pool itself is well kept. I originally started these classes on a friend's recommendation when I needed a non-weight bearing workout following foot injuries, and I have never stopped going back since! The people who come to her class are of all fitness levels and ages, everyone is very friendly, and the workout routines are varied regularly. I highly recommend these classes (deep or shallow water) to anyone as a great and enjoyable workout. read more

This was by far the best water work out I have ever had. While visiting family in L.A., I found Aqua Fit by doing a Yelp search. The deep water class was a serious work out! First we did laps with our float belts on. Then we started in on the water weights. This was my first time with Allison, and I THOUGHT I could hold my own in any water aerobics class compared to other students. NOT! Lol.... Even though I was the slowest student, I still managed to get in almost all of my laps. My Mickey Mouse Apple watch told me I burned 500 calories too! I took private swim lessons with Ali and she really is the most amazing teacher. It's always awkward and embarrassing to try and learn to swim as an adult, but she was super matter of fact and was immediately able to improve my stroke with a few key tips. She paid super close attention to me for the entire 30 minutes and it was overall just such a great experience. I hope I can take more lessons with her! Swimming in the best case scenario makes me nervous, and I've always felt it was less an exercise and more surviving slowly drowning. As I somehow got it into my head that I would love to do a triathalon, I realized I would need serious help in the water. Allyson is a mind-boggling good swimmer and I loved her approach to watch and feed adjustments one at a time without overloading me with too many changes to focus on at once. Taking the form one body part at a time, and getting constant reassurance to relax and swim slow, really helped to both ease my fear in the water, but also to increase my speed and efficiency as well. After just a couple weeks with her, I had my first session where only minimal water ended up in my stomach and my heart-rate was consistently raised from something other than panic. I met with Allyson both in the pool and then at the beach. I honestly didn't think I'd be able to swim in open water anytime soon, but felt so reassured by Allyson's energy and confidence, that I was out in the water with her swimming farther out past the waves than I thought humans had any right to be. And I loved it. To anyone like myself that isn't sure if swimming is for them, I couldn't recommend Allyson enough. She's been my water sherpa, and opened up a practice in the water I didn't think was possible just a few weeks ago. I'm sure she will do the same for you. read more

I love Aqua fit. This my 4th year doing it and I look forward to it every Wednesday night. I workout at the gym 6 days a week. The workout I do at the gym is hard on my body because it is high impact. Aqua Fit really rounds out my workout routine with something different that isn't hard on my body. I love that it is low impact and most of all that it is fun. The hour goes by so fast and you really get a great workout. She plays music and uses lots of different equipment to have us work different muscles. We use kick boards, noodles, foam barbells, frisbees, etc. Allyson always changes things up and adds new moves so you don't get bored. I highly recommend this class. read more

I can't say enough good things about the Aqua Fit deep water aerobics class at the Culver City Pool! This is definitely not your grandma's water aerobics class or boring lap swimming... Let's face it, what could be better than participating in a fun and challenging low resistance workout in a beautiful pool with good music, lots of toys and extremely nice people. Every class is different down to the music selection. We all wear flotation belts and Allyson does a great job of switching out the exercises and equipment to have us work different muscles. For instance, we may spend extra time doing timed "sprints" across the pool (doing "strokes" which we call "rock climbing" "cross country ski" and "aqua jog" among others. Then she may have us switch to kick boards, foam barbells, pool noodles and various other pieces of equipment to target specific muscles. I have been a regular for over five years and do my best not to miss any of the Wednesday evening or Saturday morning classes. Most of all, it's fun! Each class ends with a stretch and then we all do the wave (a la Esther Williams ) and everyone leaves smiling! read more

I have been taking Allyson's classes on and off since we moved to Culver City in 2000. I usually take the shallow water class because Saturday mornings, when it is taught, work best for me. I recently took her Aqua Stand Up class which I LOVED and found muscles I didn't even know I had. I have taken quite a few water aerobics classes in my life but none of the instructors compare to Allyson. She works hard to create an invigorating class with music that jibes perfectly with the moves. She has groovy routines, and keeps an eye on the participants to make sure everyone understands the moves. Her shallow water class is great for all ages and sizes. She has a lovely sense of humor, and is fit, as well, so she's an inspiration to us all. The way I describe Aqua Stand Up is pilates in the water. It's a lot of fun, the music is perfect for the moves, and she is very attentive to make sure we get our bodies in the correct position so that we don't injure ourselves. I have been attending one of Ally's Aqua fit classes for almost 10 years. There's a little something for everyone. Shallow water, if you like to keep your feet grounded. Remember when you were a kid and spent hours just jumping around in the pool? Remember how well you slept! Same idea but a little more organized jumping. Great way to exercise if you have injuries. Deep water is just that, in the deep end you go! Luckily you get to wear a floaty belt to help with buoyancy and it does provide a little extra friction when moving through the water. You don't have to wear it, I've done it both ways. Ally does a pretty intense work out in the Deep Water and covers aerobic activity as well as weight work. The Aqua stand up is done on paddle boards that are leashed together for stability. You get an amazing workout but you really need to be able to get on the board and mostly up and down. It moves pretty fast. Ally is an inspiring advocate for exercise and will always help with any adjustments you might need. Besides, what's better than jumping in a pool on those hot days. I love Allyson's water aerobics classes and have taken both shallow water and deep water classes for at least six years now. She's a perfect teacher -- well informed, humorous, committed, and, convincingly, she is an athlete. They keep me toned and cheerful. There's a spirit of play, always, which doesn't mean she doesn't push you to get that aerobic benefit. We wear flotation belts in the deep water class, get the aerobic benefit from laps and sprints but also in-place exercise for arms and abs. We work on balance with styrofoam noodles. Judging by the good humor of those who keep coming back year after year, her classes seem to be about something more than fitness. I particularly like the night classes and the lights on the water. But the Saturday morning class always seem like the beginning of a perfect Saturday. read more

Aquafit with Allyson is great! I started coming years ago, moved away for a few years and moved back and was so glad to find out it was still going strong. I'm young, but I have joint problems, and it is really really hard to find exercise that is good enough cardio but also isn't high impact - this is perfect. I have done deep and shallow water and like them both, if you work hard you can get a great workout. Amazingly, even if you come frequently, each class is always different so you don't get bored (plus, it's insanely hot out these days- why not work out underwater!). The classes have a huge age range, the people are nice and there is a very friendly vibe- Allyson has a great sense of humor and always explains everything, so it's not intimidating even if you haven't done it before. read more
