Obviously your not going to get luxury from Travelodge but the bed was comfy and I was quite happy with the spacious room. I think its also cheaper than the town version and has onsite parking.

The only downsides I associate with travelodges are their often tired, worn out and uninspired decor and their unromantic motorway side locations. No so with the Travelodge at Atlantic Wharf Cardiff bay. They have obviously tried to create a bit of a flagship model hotel for the group here. It's light, airy, bright and clean plus its only 2 minutes walk to the bars and restaurants of Cardiff Bay and 10 minutes to the City Centre. So if you're not planning a romantic weekend you could do a lot worse than book this during one of its many offer periods.

I rang the hotel and spoke to Daniel who arranged for the driver to bring the hotel minibus to collect me, and arrived some ten minutes later. I was warmly greeted by the driver who got me to the hotel in next to no time. Once at the reception, Daniel swiftly checked in for my two night stay. My room was on the first floor, and was inviting and comfortable. The air conditioning worked well, as did the heating. I was given free wifi access (as an IHG member), which was extremely useful to me, as I had some work to do. A dinner menu was on offer until 9.30pm, which you ordered the food via the reception/bar area. Don't expect Michelin star food, as it won't be offered. Instead, you'll be offered a family-friendly menu with many favourites. It more than serves its purpose and prices aren't too bad either. Breakfast is a basic buffet, offering scrambled eggs and sausages, plus croissants, fruit and yoghurt, and bread for toast. Tea and coffee making facilities are offered. All in all, it serves the purpose it's there for. The Great Room, allows for an evening drink, and dinner can be had there too. During the day, drinks, crisps and biscuits are on offer, and a choice of pizzas too. The best part about the hotel are the staff. Daniel and Jemma (Guest Service Managers) and their teams, are truly brilliant and are all warm and friendly, offering a true Welsh welcome. Given the close proximity to the airport (you can walk to the terminal in under ten minutes) it's great for a pre/post night stay, as well as long stay parking. You are just four miles from Barry Island, and around twelve miles from Cardiff City Centre (which you can reach by express bus from outside the airport terminal). The facilities are clean, the staff helpful, and the pool is truly nice. They have a lot of good classes, which, sadly, are often so booked up with eager yoga-ists, Pilates-fans and Zumba- enthusiasts that we stretch, strain and Zumba into our nearest neighbour. Luckily all with good grace and a smile and, as far as I know, no major fallings-out or injuries. The latest offerings are as diverse as walking clubs, wine tasting and poker (obviously the whole health thing might be slipping a tad). There are a number of membership options starting from around £40 per month, which if I go three times a week works out at cheaper than attending classes elsewhere. Then, I can destroy all my good work by wandering into the café or bar afterwards.

I think it has something to do with the area code. but once I made contact it was smooth sailing from there! I loved the mirrors with the quotes on them, the chandeliers and the paintings. I had room 12 which was nice and tucked away so I had all the privacy i wanted. The bathroom was perfect and private. They had a sheet of useful information in my room, including cab estimates, restaurants, pubs, and hotel information. Its so close to city center which was amazing!! After spending a lot of the time at the Castle and the city center, i came back to relax and turn on the tv. Only to find out there was another rugby match! So I headed to a recommended pub just down the street where I met some GREAT people. The only downfall is that i couldnt spend more time at this Hotel and in Cardiff!! Food is served in the cafe which is situated in the hotel - although this is run separately from the hotel. As the Pier hotel sits on such a good site on Pothcawls promenade it is a shame that it is only a very basic hotel, and that it doesnt aspire to be something nicer or fancier - it does however fulfill it's remit of being a clean, basic and cheap hotel - which offers satisfactory accommodation for the price. The Pier bar is popular in the evenings - and has a late licence, so could present some noise problems for the guests on weekends.
