Consequentially, these kids can be a bit elitist and oblivious, and sometimes downright mean. The school is essentially run by a few rich families who donate a lot of money. The class sizes are very small and if a kid is a little different or doesn't quite fit in, it can be very hard for them to find friends. Many of the kids have gone there since preschool, and have tight knit social groups that can be very hard for a new kid to break into. Though they have a lot of fancy stuff and nice facilities, the quality of education is ultimately not better than the Kettering city schools. In fact, attending Miami Valley teaches you much less about real life than the local public schools do, as the kids interact with only those of their own wealthier social class. I met a few really wonderful, kind kids when I went there for a short time, but they were the odd ones, the misfits who were raised well by their parents or who knew of life outside of the rich bubble. So, in my personal opinion, you would be much better off sending your child to the Kettering city schools. They would get a more well-rounded education, on a social and practical level as well.

We were a family living in Los Angeles, raising 2 young kids and had learned enough about the values of grit, self-directed learning, and raising empowered kids that we knew the right school environment was of the utmost importance to us. The problem was, the only kinds of schools in Los Angeles that offer that kind of education cost LITERALLY 20-30 thousand dollars a year. For PRESCHOOL. That is insane, and it was impossible for us to consider. But when we discovered the Antioch School, their incredible teachers, the grounds, the philosophy, the history, etc. AND saw that it was not only much less expensive, but offers financial aid to nearly 50% of it's students, it sealed the deal for us. We moved here and have had our oldest in the school for 2 years and his transformation has been incredible. Getting to watch his social skills and capacity for play and learning, trying new things, etc. It's the greatest gift we could give him (and ourselves as parents.) If you're a parent who believes that the modern public system of over-testing and lack of exploration for kids is NOT the solution to raising well-adjusted, smart, capable kids or if you believe that playing outdoors is more important than spending 8 hours a day at a desk, this is the school for you. Jessie and Ami in the 3-6 class are wonderful, can't say enough good things about them. The 3-6 class typically has 20-25 students. The 6-9 and 9-12 classes are quite small, which can be a pro or con depending on what you're looking for, but the kids seem to be happy/thriving. If you are interested in traditional Montessori, give this place a look. Extras during the week include music, art, Spanish, Muse Machine (which is awesome), and phys-Ed (has included yoga, martial arts and dance). They have a playground, before/after school care, and a number of family and parent social events during the year. Communication with parents is good. If I have one criticism, it is that I wish they went outside more on some of the colder winter days, but I'm from a colder state so I may be biased.
