My daughter is registered at a kiosk and a "Dream Team" member takes her to her very own kids class while I enjoy the Sunday service, I am still getting to know the church but so far I am absolutely happy to be able to attend to this amazing church. I don't like to change my routine because I'm traveling for business. If I can go to church where…read moreever I land...I go. I Google searched "Presbyterian church" and found/chose StMarks because it was closest to my hotel and ultimately a relatively cheap Uber ride. When I visit a church it's mostly for me...provides me some food for thought through the minister...get my mind right for the coming week. Very rarely do I think "I wish this were my home church". First time in 20yrs, of business travel and going to church...the thought "wow, I wish this were my home church" crossed my mind. Why is that? Their service is the perfect blend of a traditional Presbyterian worship service (a lot of standing up and siting down, which I've always liked) while sprinkling in the modern, the minister that day was female, something I rarely see and talked about welcoming the LGBT community to Christianity in general. They have an organist! My home church doesn't have an organist ! They have not discarded traditional hymns, which frankly made me emotional because it has been so long since I've heard them during a worship service( literally music to my ears). They didn't have a choir but that's not unusual. They did have someone leading the music, and the words were projected onto a wall. From the traditional to modern the music here put me in the right frame of mind. The message the minister offered was thought provoking which gave me something to ponder the rest of the week (as I conducted my business). Lastly, the congregation was super friendly and welcoming. There were those in the congregation who came from the front area (i sat in the very back row) to give me "a sign of peace"...and I'd be remise if I didn't acknowledge all the others who welcomed me before the start of the service. It was truly an awesome visit and reminded me of all the good things I recall from going to church during my childhood and at the same time made me realize that I'm not after all a very good example of being a Christian...something I need to work on. This is my first ever Yelp of a church and I'm doing so because I got all I needed here, spiritually, I was at peace when I left and thought it was valuable from a visitor point of view to share the uniqueness of this congregation. I have been waiting weeks to go to the rummage sale today and I was in line with about 200 other…read morepeople at 7:50am waiting to get in. Upon entry I was greeted with a smile and a welcome and given a very detailed map of where all the departments were located throughout the church for the sale. In each department there were many smiling helpful church members offering assistance. I found loads of cook books, a 14k gold chain, bits to make a terrarium and many other great items. The church itself is beautiful with a large parking lot. Very nice church members working there. I can't wait for next years sale.

Okay, so I recognize that this will sound crazy to many: I flew from Boston to D.C. just for the…read moreday to attend the temple open house in May, and it was without question worth it. My first exposure to the Washington D.C. Temple was ten years ago when my sister took me to the visitors' center as a surprise. Approaching the temple on the Capital Beltway, I couldn't even tell what it was; having never before seen a Latter-day Saint temple, it was unlike any building I had ever encountered. I found it spectacular. As a result of my deep interest in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I've subsequently viewed the exteriors of temples in Salt Lake City, Provo, Omaha, Nauvoo, Palmyra, and Boston, but always hoped I would one day have the opportunity to see the inside of a temple. When the Washington D.C. open house was announced prior to the pandemic, I was elated! This is the third largest temple in the world, and was the only one in the United States east of the Mississippi at the time it was built -- what an exciting temple to have the opportunity to visit. (It's also the "home" temple of my favorite Mormon scholar, Terryl Givens. Because everyone has a favorite Mormon scholar, right?) When the pandemic-related postponements ended at last and the open house dates were announced, I booked a plane ticket and was on my way. The temple exterior was even more magnificent than I remembered. It was so interesting to see all of the different areas of the temple -- the baptistry, the ordinance rooms, the sealing rooms -- and I enjoyed the artwork by artists such as Minerva Teichert and Lewis A. Ramsey. However, without a doubt the highlight was the Celestial Room. I had heard that Celestial Rooms are beautiful, but, honestly, it took my breath away. The chandeliers, which cast rainbow refracted light, were stunning. The mood was very peaceful, and I spent a good twenty minutes or so just absorbing it and reflecting on my experience. The open house website had indicated that a visit would take approximately 45 minutes total, which made me wonder if they would have to keep the crowds moving to get everyone in and out. But, to my pleasure, we were allowed to progress at our own pace, and altogether my visit of the temple and grounds was well over three hours. The sister missionaries and Mormon families with whom I talked during my visit were all absolutely stunned that I had traveled from Boston just for the open house. But the last open house was in 1974; this was a once-in-several-generations opportunity. I think the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is one of the most misunderstood faiths in the world today, and I'm grateful that the Church opened the doors of the D.C. Temple so that non-members like me had a chance to learn more about it.

They weren't prepared to use their own coffee and hot water makers. The service was lovely. The family wasn't rushed. We wore masks except when eating or drinking. There is a school next door. Traffic has gotten worse over time. Depending which way you come, it is hard to turn left to enter the church parking lot. You may have to drive a few blocks to make a legal u-turn.
