Got us in quickly. Staff was amazing with my son. We were in and out of there in about 2 1/2 hours and that included a CAT scan and stitches. BUT, with that said staff was top notch from check in, to nurse, to provider DrMartin, were all SO kind and helpful. I've never experienced such kind staff in an ER. The whole experience was horrible. I had to get out of there. When I tried, I fell 3 times. They said I eloped but the doctor said I she was discharging me. My head was bleeding from hitting a waiting room chair. Didn't even get looked at for that. Said I was verbally abusive and screaming at them. Receptionist said I had called and asked if the ER were super busy and could I get pain meds. I have my own pain meds. Don't need theirs. Allin all 14 degrees outside and I wasn't allowed to wait in the waiting room for my ride. I was transported there by ambulance in my pj's. We desperately need this ER but we don't need the seemingly professionals (I say that loosely) that are, well, anything but. read more

We were visiting Angel Fire for a spring break ski trip, when my 15 year old son came down with appendicitis. We were nervous going to a small town hospital coming from a large city ourselves, but felt a peace about taking him to Holy Cross. From the initial triage nurse and Dr in the ER, to the pre-op dept, to recovery, the care and staff were phenomenal. So caring and thorough, they took great care of him. One team member from pre-op, Brad, even went and bought him an oatmeal raisin cookie bc he heard that my son liked them! They took care of the little things as well as the big things! I was inpatient twice in 2 years. All nurses - including student nurses were competent and caring. The hospital needs some updating, but it's clean and acceptable. I live in Taos and wish that my own local physician could treat me when in the hospital, but I understand that our small hospital can make more money using hospitalists. read more

HOLY CROSS Is a miracle in our desert. The staff is amazing. On NY eve The ER starting with Tru and then to Jen and Christy and Dr.Amy Martin taking care of my flu symptoms. Returning two nights later to the credit of Dr Kat Townsley finding acute appendicitis. Jen was there. Then I was whisked into what felt like a 5Star hotel --the surgery department by happy Laurie. Brad the Pilgrim, amazing human. he treated me like I was in a spa. Kim the anesthesiologist very smart taciturn and thorough! I felt so safe ! I have heard some horror stories about the place, but after my wife had a devastating stroke, and spent two weeks here, I found nothing to complain about. Staff was totally compassionate and professional. They quickly did her cat scan. She had a massive hemorrhage, and they thought she would die in the emergency room. They arranged a video consult with a neurosurgeon in Albuquerque, since there is none in Taos. He explained there was nothing to be done as far as surgery...we could only wait and hope she would recover. For a week, she drifted in and out of a coma as almost a dozen friends and family streamed in from around the country to be at her side. The hospital took incredible care of her, and all of us. They made us feel so comfortable, people kept referring to it as the hotel, instead of the hospital. When I complained about the fold out chair I was sleeping in, they found me a better one. Staff was caring and compassionate. Doctors were accessible and informative. I can't think of anything I wish they would have done that they did not do. At the end of the first week, when most of our friends had to leave, the cafeteria manager helped arrange a thank you gathering and provided snacks at no charge. The meals there were cheap and excellent. After the first week, my wife came out of the coma and started to get better. They arranged for her to move to a skilled nursing facility in Albuquerque. Her recovery has been miraculous. I love our little hospital. I am pretty amazed at some of the bad reviews here. At least two of them are from people upset that the hospital did not provide them transportation home. Looks like a lot of people just don't understand that, in the ER, its not first come, first serve. They treat the sickest first. We've been the the ER 3 times, and found it totally professional. read more

If i could give zero i would. My daughter got stomach virus. The wait has been two hours and we r still waiting!!. People rude. Avoid!!! They are the only hospital in town snd they know it. Waiting room full of people and they just don't care. My daughter just throws up every 15 minutes. Shame on any doctor who works here. We are from Austin,TX and have never waited this long. They say that the rooms are full but i have gone to our hospital at home and they would line us up in the hallway and treat us there. Do not retire in this town! You will likely die in the waiting room. What a nightmare. read more

I was in a 30 mph motorcycle wreck at 0710 within a 1.5 mi. of the hospital. EMTs showed up in a timely manner and was delivered to Holy Cross carefully. Emergency room staff was great and had me stabilized promptly. Off to cat scan then some X-rays. Broken ribs and collarbone, slightly collapsed lung. Very little road rash as I was suited up and helmeted. I asked that they not call the wife, as she had horse plans for the day and I did not want to disrupt. Was discharged that afternoon. Plenty of pain. Went back for the collar bone fix in about 2 weeks after the swelling went down. There was a 3 hr wait or so, but I was patient, comfortable and relaxed. The docs operated and was discharged about 7pm. Fabulous facility, great docs and support team. I felt well cared for. Healling up real fast. Eat your vegetables. read more

The nurse named ma and Savon are very kind and concerned. They are concerned about the patient. The other nurses some seemed unkind don't want to be bothered. When you have a loved one I the hospital. If you can please stay with them.My husband could not use the bed pan. So he used it on disposable pad. I pushed the button and because they were changing shifts. He had to wait over thirty minutes. I feel like if I were not there. He won't even get breakfast or a drink of water lunch or dinner. The order has to be called in. I'm wondering what happens to patients that can't really do for themselves. This is horrible! The thought of me not being there !I feel like they would get to him when ever. This is why so many elderly patients have bed sores and get sick . Hopefully some body will investigate these issues and fast. Also the machines always beeping .They need to take more time assisting the patient. read more

I very rarely take the time to write reviews for anything. That said, I feel obliged to write this review. First, a little backstory....Both myself and members in my family have had awful experiences with Western Medicine. The first time I was rushed to Holy Cross Hospital by ambulance and feinted in my husband's arms as I was walking toward the ambulance to get in. I was taken to the ER where I was assisted by really wonderful nurses. The next time I arrived at the ER my husband drove me on October 14th and I was admitted after feinting in the ER three times. I was so out of it and really wish I could remember all of the staff's names that night, but I cannot. Everyone was wonderful, compassionate, and made me feel cared for. I was scared out of my mind. A traveling nurse, Kelly watched me over night in the Labor and Delivery Area of the hospital. She listened to me and my fears. There was no judgement about how I felt about Western Medicine. The next morning I had a whole new staff of nurses, one being Jennifer. I remember her name because my name is also, Jennifer. These ladies were top notch, from the nurses to the Anesthesiologist and finally....Dr. Ransom. As long as Dr. Ransom is on staff, she will be my doctor. She is the BEST doctor I have been cared for by in all of New Mexico. Her bedside manner is one of compassion, understanding, and not forcing something on her patients that they are not comfortable with. Within a few short hours, I trusted her to do whatever she thought best for me because she 'listened." This is something that sadly many doctors don't do in my experience. I felt so blessed and cared for by this staff. The experience didn't stop here. I had check-ups and found out I needed to have surgery. Dr. Ransom even worked to move my surgery up due to the symptoms from my condition after yet another visit to the ER and several attempts of trying different medicines to help with my symptoms. There is so much more to explain here, but it is not necessary. From Linda and Cecila in the billing department to Gloria, Dr. Ransom's assistant to Jennifer and all of the nurses, and the assistants that helped prep me for surgery. EVERYONE, I came into contact with cared....genuinely. Thank you all so very much. I am grateful to have had an experience such as this with Western Medicine that has changed my view, helped me heal, and made me feel cared for during a very scary time in my life. read more

I have been going to Holy Cross for the past three years to do lab work for my physician in Santa Fe. Only recently have I learned that my Dr never gets a full report, in fact one of the tests which is critical is either never sent with the bulk of the lab results or not done at all. My physician doubts that there is anyone at HolyCross lab who actually knows what do in order to obtain the results. So irritating and so very disappointing that this hospital is taking chances with patient care. Now I have to go to Espanola for a simple blood draws; so incredibly inconvenient. Come on HOLY CROSS administrators get your act together and fix what is wrong with your hospital, and don't forget about the faxes that always get lost! So be warned about this lab, it is not what you think! read more

If you have a serious injury, avoid coming to this place by all means. 4 hour emergency room wait without pain medication, it took then another 2 hours to fix a dislocated shoulder that took 5 minutes. Then another hour to get discharged. I bet more people have died here than have been rescued. You're better off driving to albequerqui to find a hospital. I've had better service and care in Tijuana, Old Mexico. Seriously, they discharged me after 7 hours and left me snowed in without being able to drive back to town. Not the slightest remorse for the hassle. I can't wait to get the insurance bill for below-tijuana-grade service. American healthcare at it's finest. read more

Taos is not the best place for a retiree with any health issues to live. As in many smaller towns, the high number of Medicaid patients means the profits are not there and many medical professionals are heading to the big cities. There are specialties which are no longer available in Taos. All-in-all people requiring a hospital should probably be glad Holy Cross is there with an air ambulance to take more serious cases to Santa Fe or Albuquerque. The staff has many dedicated and hard-working employees and a few bummers considering. But the services can be quickly overwhelmed in serious situations. Much of the expensive medical equipment is old or outdated. Visits to the emergency department can mean many hours laying on an uncomfortable gurney hungry and ignored. People have probably died rather than endure the ED. There are aspects of HCH which deserve one star. There are others that deserve 6 stars. That is why I give it three stars...a happy medium. There are nurses who are angels and others who are sadists. That's probably true of any hospital. 17 years ago I was thrown out of HCH 24 hours after major surgery and with no ride 25 miles home. They claimed they needed the bed. I believe that since then they have reduced the number of beds. On the positive side the food is exceptional by my experience with hospitals. Outsiders even come to the restaurant voluntarily. Ice cream and Popsicles are always available to the nurse's stations. Since the TV sucks at least one can enjoy a small comfort-treat now and then. read more

Every experience here is dreadful. Did my clinical studies here for my EMT lisence,the staff was so rude and unhappy, talking shit on patients in the nurses station, I let my lisence go. Took my boyfriend here recently as he fell off a roof and broke his L1 vertebre. Martha Miller the acting NP, why do you work in the health CARE industry if you hate it so damn much? His woman was misreble... I have encountered her on roof separate occasions, always rude, always made, always unprofessional. My boyfriend was screaming in pain for hours and they would not help him, or did the send him home with pain meds. I hate this place, not only did I give up my career in healthcare, I dread everything I have to make a visit. read more

I guess I was extremely fortunate compared to some of the reviewers. In 2018, I passed a gallstone that nicked my intestine and caused sepsis. I was taken by EMT to the emergency room where they saw me immediately and began treatment. The antibiotics they first administered were ineffective, but they quickly changed antibiotics and I started to come around. I saw several doctors, all of whom were very kind and explained in detail what was going on. I was in the hospital four nights. My only complaint was the nurses in the nurses station were very talkative late at night, in very loud voices, keeping me awake. When I was discharged, they gave me the name of a private citizen who took me back to my car (for $20) which was about 20 miles away. As a comment for the person complained she had to wait in the emergency room for two hours; that is fairly typical in any emergency room where it is not a life or death situation. read more

It's ok to come here for blood draws or mammograms (those are probably 4 stars). And the administrative/records staff are very nice. The emergency room is not a good experience at all, however. I have been there twice. Some of the staff are pretty good but some are terrible, and at one point I had to listen for hours in the middle of the night to people in the nurse's station saying truly horrible things about patients. I went in on another night afraid I was having a heart attack; I was not, so they released me at 7 am on a Sunday with no way home (they wanted me out at 4 am, but listened to reason). Luckily I had an Uber driver's home number and she was kind enough to come get me at 7:30 or 8:00. I only live 4 or 5 miles away, so I suppose I could have walked home -- a great outcome for someone whose blood pressure had been 180/90 the night before. (Oh yeah, and when I was there the monitor they put on my finger was broken, so an alarm would go off about every 20 minutes; not only did that keep me from sleeping, the staff ignored it until I hit the call button.) On the plus side, they did do a whole bunch of tests to ensure that I had not had a heart attack. And the blood draw and mammogram people are very nice. read more

Been going to Holy Cross for a variety services for over two years. Best advice? Stay away! Stay far away if you can. Had an Advanced Practice Nurse for my family practice visits--she was good. Filled me in on all the horror stories re the hospital, all the traveling nurses, its financial instability and poor leadership. All the good doctors flee! Tonight while my father laid in his bed shaking, hyper ventilating and almost passed out, he muttered to the nurse- who hadn't checked on us for ages- that he needed to pee. She handed me a pis container and walked out! WTF! Meanwhile, when i tried to alert his doctors of his worsening condition, they were to busy making jokes in the hallway to care. Since giving Holy Cross Hospital a 5 Star Review for the service we received, I am downgrading this to 2 Stars (and it may go down to 1 Star depending on how this all works out). Problems arose from their Billing Department. Unfortunately, due to our insurance with Christus Health Care we have received not one cent of help for our bills of nearly $7000 for an ER visit and a 12-hour overnight observation stay. During negotiations and discussions with the billing department they offered a discount of 36 percent on the bill if we paid immediately, so we paid just over $4000 to them, while still continuing to negotiate with Christus around some of the smaller bills. Then, without telling us, Holy Cross Billing Department sent one bill, for $265.14 to a collection agency. We paid that bill of course under protest. We still have outstanding issues with our bills. Part of the issue is because our insurer, Christus, sells insurance in the Taos region through the Government marketplace but Holy Cross has not negotiated a contract with them, and we poor souls get stuck in the middle. However, my real issue is sending an outstanding bill to collections without first giving us one final chance to pay. Hence my decreased star rating. In 2017 we had reason to visit Holy Cross for a blood draw, and once again would give Holy Cross a five star rating for its medical staff so I'm upgrading my review to 4 stars. It would be five star if it wasn't for the attitude of their billing staff. Just make sure you have your insurance in order before you visit! read more

I had total knee replacement here with Dr. Sean Marvil who is with Taos Orthopedic Institute. He conducts all of his surgeries at this hospital exclusively. The admitting process went smoothly. The care was outstanding. I was very satisfied with all of the nurses. The surgery staff was great. I came here from Albuquerque because of the innovative techniques Dr. Marvil uses. In addition, I agree with other reviewers who said the food was good. read more

My partner had a total knee replacement at Holy Cross Hospital about a week ago. What should have been a relatively routine hospital stay became very difficult. It began with a femoral nerve block (given by the nurse anesthetist before surgery to decrease post operative pain) that didn't work. She awakened after surgery to full operative pain without any pain management in place. Not a good start ! They repeated the Femoral block which did work (but too little too late). After arriving in her room they started her on the standard post op pain medication. However the pharmacy made an error and sent up 2 bottles of the long acting medication, instead of 1 bottle of the short acting one used for "break through pain" and 1 long acting one. As a result the pain remained severe, and she was so sedated she was unable to fully participate in Physical Therapy. Her Dr (the surgeon) or his assistant arrived each morning with a "rah-rah" speech which started by telling her that if she didn't become more active quickly in spite of the pain, the knee replacement would have been for nothing. He even told her that if he had known how much difficulty she would have he would not have done the surgery. Each day for the first 3 days after surgery there was confusion between the written orders of the Dr, and what he said he was going to order when making rounds. Nursing called many times a day to attempt to clarify the difference between the spoken and written words. This created long delays in pain control. On day 5 things seemed to fall into place and she began to be able to more actively participate in PT. They noted improvement immediately. On day 6 late afternoon a bed became available in in patient rehab next to the hospital. Although the Dr wanted her to come home (unable to walk farther than 10 feet with a 2 person assist), we decided to transfer her to this bed. The case manager never told her that the bed was available and that she was being discharged. neither did she notify the family. So far, so good in Rehab. A good decision I think !! I will end this with a simple bit of advice. If you're going to be the patient, have a strong advocate during your stay. If your loved one is going to be a patient, be there, ask questions and follow the chain of command to problem solve and achieve the desired outcome. read more

I'm a local here in Taos and this was the Worst hospital I've ever been to. I came in with huge breathing problems and they made me wait in the waiting room for almost 6 hours. When they finally saw me the doctor said I was fine and that there wasn't anything wrong with my lungs. When I refused to leave the staff was rude and uptight to me and my family. I ended up driving to Santa Fe just to get proper treatment. Not sure who runs the place but they need to get their s*** together. It's a shame taos is stuck with this hospital. read more

on 1/13/2016 my husband was told to go to the ER @Holy Cross to have his back pain looked at . we registered at 5:15 and were taken to do vitals at that time the man person did not roll up his sleeves to take a good reading till finallyI asked it be done right my husband was in excruciating pain /he had no empathy for his pain . They took him to a room which for a full 1 &1/2 hrs not a nurse or doctor came to see as to why he was there . I went to the desk and was told of the order of pain was there way of seeing patients ..I said my husband was in a lot of pain ,no one came . I stood out of the door hoping someone would come in no one did till after 1 &1/12hrs and my leaving the door open so they could see he was very much in pain would come in . a Nurse walked by without even a glance in the room and I asked why, she got ugly with me and said he was not a priority . which in turn I said do you not see he can not even sit on the chair he is screaming with pain kneeling on the floor the only way he could stand the pain and she said I was being HOSTILE !!! and did not even look in side the door .. so I waited with the door open when the guard walked by and asked if he was ok ,I said no he is not & could he bring at least a warm towel to put on his back and he did ,the only person who even notice Rob was in pain after 1 &1/2 hrs .....while I was waiting I saw 2 doctors and several nurses going into the nurses station with drinks and food laughing and caring on again I asked for someone and was ignored. just before 7 pm a Doctor: Joseph Boyle came in and yelled at me for being a hostile and confrontational wife ( NOT A CONCERNED WIFE SEEING HER HUSBAND IN EXCRUCIATING PAIN ) not asking me as to why this has occurred and said he would refuse to see my husband if I were in the room. I said all I ever wanted was for someone to come and check on him in the first place ..after another 2 hrs they had to do 2 CAT-SCANS because he was in so much pain they had to medicate him 1st. when he was released the attending nurse said she understood my position of irate wife !!!! Boyle came in and said he had a herniated disc...could see he was in pain . Said he had to see his Doctor first to see a Neurologist.. on he Clinical Documents I picked up the next day the Disposition said he was discharged home in improved condition !!!!! My foot he was still in unbelievable pain. I will never recommend HOLY CROSS !!! go to Espanola, Santa FE, much better hospitals and hope you do not end up in the ER IN TAOS HOLY CROSS. Being in the Medical field myself I know a patient is never to be left alone for more then a few minutes .. with the Nurses looking in on them , back pain could also be a symptom of a heart attack .. If I had not shown my concern for my husband we would more the likely still be waiting !!!! read more

we took our mother in the hospital with chest pain and left arm numbness. it took forever to see a dr. for one, but the worst part of it was when they sent my 82 year old mother home saying it was a ear ache! they soposedly checked her heart. when we were getting back home, which was about 45 min. away she was feeling alot worse. one of my other sisters took her to st. vincent hospital.to make it short my mother was having a heart attack!!!!!!!!!! how can you miss something like that. taos hospital is just a building, with a staff that has no heart. the staff does not care and they are very rude! someday it will fall back on these people and they will know the filling of seeing your mother in so much pain and almost losing her! or themselves for that matter. read more
