My daughter's second year here at HRSJ and we are very happy here. The teachers and staff are wonderful and the families are amazing.

We have been in this school since by boys were in first grade. This year my son will graduate from this wonderful school. We are sad that we are leaving the community of people that we built all these years. This private and catholic school was the best school our boys have experienced for 8 years. My daughter is currently in 3rd grade at HRSJ. The academics at this school are outstanding. But more importantly, HRSJ teaches its kids to be kind, have high morals, and be good citizens. For instance, the middle school kids open doors for the adults when they come visit. The kids do not cuss, bully, or demean each other. I am reluctant to write a review as to keep this school the secret gem that it is. My wife and I were ready to move in order to find a good school for our then 5 year old Son. Before doing so, we explored a few local private schools. After touring the beautiful campus, and observing the small (but focused) class sizes we were sold. The notable takeaway was when touring the middle school classrooms and the kids would stand when we walked in and introduce themselves. We left that day without any questions of where our Son would spend his youth. Fast forward 5 years and now our youngest is in TK and our oldest in 3rd. HRSJ is our community. It is home to us. My daughter has been going to HRSJ since TK. She is a 5th grader now, and to see her growth in academics, accountability, and overall maturity is amazing. The small class size is what sold us. Small classes, caring teachers and a beautiful campus in the heart of La Crescenta! Our children have attended Holy Redeemer - St. James School for the past three years and we can't speak highly enough of the teachers and families that make up this school community. Our older child, in 3rd grade, has blossomed under the care and tutelage of Mrs. Grigoryan, learning not just core subjects but about art and art history, how to be a better citizen, and learning to pay attention to the world around us. I have a 3rd grader and a kindergartener at HRSJ and both of my children started there in TK. We initially chose the school because of the small class sizes and Catholic education. In the four and half years we have been there, I am continually impressed with the academics, character of the children and supportive school community. I have loved each teacher my kids have had and have had a positive experience with the combined grade classrooms. With COVID impacting so many schools, I wanted to update my review, as did Allison P. I thank God that we have such a tight-knit community (with social distancing, of course) and we have new leadership that came right in the midst of the pandemic. Our principal, Dr. Wick, is a Godsend: he is transparent, a team-builder, and a visionary who knows how to implement change while building consensus within our school community. My son is an eighth-grader now, and I know that he will be prepared for private high school notwithstanding the challenges of distance learning. Today I was blessed to watch the Holy Redeemer - St. James School's Living Stations of the Cross. It was absolutely beautiful. The 8th graders did a fantastic job! I was impressed to see that the entire school was made part of the program, as they were the choir and sang the Stabat Mater after each station. They sounded angelic! The readings, prayers, performance, costumes, and attention to detail was very impressive! It concluded with a lovely piano solo by one of the 8th grade boys. I wanted to update my review as there have been a lot of changes since my last review. Our school has a new principal as of July 1 and I cannot say enough good things about him and the changes he has made so far at school. The teachers have been working so hard this year and it is evident. Although Covid has made life a lot more challenging, the virtual learning at school has improved greatly since the spring and I know my boys are getting a lot of attention from staff. Additionally the school is giving the kids opportunities to come onto campus every few weeks for "activity days" with their classes which has helped with socialization. I expect great things from our little school moving forward with this new leadership. read more

This is a great school. Our child started here in Jr. High, he'd never done a sport before but teachers and the coach encouraged him to try flag football. He loves it and is looking forward to spring ball. Academics are excellent; his class is going more in-depth on their fiction books than I did in high school. Math makes sense to the kids. We are not Catholic but appreciate the philosophy he is learning by studying Catholicism. this school provides a good balance of academics, sports, art and values. My daughter Micaela start Kinder this 2015 and i couldnt be more happy with the school!! I work from 8:30 to 5 pm and that was my concern. All the schools finish the day at 1pm and here they finish 2:30 is just 2:30 hrs in day care plus the school offers extracurricular activities like drawing and dancing outside companies that go to school to teach. that way my daughter is more active during the hours of day care. Our family's experience with St. James has been a wonderful one. We cannot imagine a better place for our children. Saint James is a safe and nurturing school; based on strong moral, spiritual and ethical values administered by amazingly talented, dedicated staff. Our children are getting the whole educational experience: academically, socially and most importantly, spiritually. The values I want my children to learn are reinforced at school, when I am not there. It makes me feel I have help in shaping my child into a God loving, wonderful person. It was the best investment we could have made! Parents are involved at every level-and the school encourages parental involvement: from helping in the classroom, volunteering at recess etc. I struggled with trying to find the best school-knowing what I know now-I wouldn't hesitate on recommending Saint James. The smaller class sizes give children a sense of comfort and plenty of attention. I've been very happy with our experience with St James. I was nervous as my child entered school, but my child got the one on one attention needed to get comfortable. The staff is very warm and welcoming, and the families are awesome. My child has learned a lot, in a great environment. Improvements being made to the campus are also a plus. read more
