The church itself is a large rectangular building, very solid and comforting, with a very modern addition in the shape of a new foyer/entrance and meeting room added onto the old entrance. This was possibly the first church anywhere around the area to appoint a female vicar. Just as in The Vicar of Dibley, the parish council weren't overjoyed at the idea, but took it on board anyway. This was further reflected in the the chairman of said PCC, a confirmed bachelor, subsequently marrying the Reverend Karen! They have had many happy years together now, but are expecting to be moved on at some time, as happens with relatively young clergy. The church has very strong links with the highly successful, well-regarded primary school in its name. For those wishing to visit, the church is very easy to find, on-street parking is possible in the surrounding area and the vicarage is next door. The stained glass is very illuminating (sorry!), but not spectacular.

St Elphin's is Warrington's ancient parish church and boasts, at 281ft, the third tallest spire of…read moreany parish church in England (some argue it's the fourth, but it's still tall!). There is some speculation as to the origins of the church, as Elphin is an unusual dedication: it may derive from a Celtic name (Alphinus) or a Saxon name (Aelfwine), suggesting either a 7th or 9th century foundation. Either way, there was probably a church here in 675AD and certainly one of that dedication here in Domesday (1086). The church was rebuilt during the mediaeval period, of which the 14th century Decorated chancel and crypt below remain. Besieged during the Civil War in 1643, the tower was rebuilt in 1696, the nave in 1770, and an aisle built early in the 19th century, but most of what now exists - including the spire - dates from a restoration by Frederick and Horace Francis in the 1860s. The church is built in a dark red sandstone, in the decorated Gothic style, sympathetic to the original chancel. Inside, the aisles retain their galleries, and the Lady Chapel contains 13th and 14th century memorials, alongside a rich collection of memorials from the 17th century onwards. The churchyard is interesting as the pavement around the church is composed of 18th and early 19th century gravestones, many beautifully preserved. There are unusual table memorials in the churchyards, although some of the altar tombs have been badly damaged. As of July 2009, the tower and chancel is undergoing restoration and is covered in scaffolding.

In the 19th century a spire was added which is popularly believed to be one of the three highest church spires (as opposed to cathedrals) in the country. I do know that it wasn't fitted in the centre of the tower, having been up there and been unable to squeeze around one of the sides! In reasonable weather, one of the volunteer staff who are in on a saturday morning will take a few visitors up to the bottom of the spire, where the views over Warrington can be spectacular (photos to be added to my profile space when I get the time). Also interesting for the paving all around the church as it is entirely paved with gravestones.

You are always welcome to come and visit our small but beautifully kept village church. At our Family Communion service every week, you will find a welcoming family atmosphere, where all are invited both young and old to worship together. After the peace we are joined by the Sunday school, who show the congregation the things they have learned that week. St.Luke's prides itself in its welcoming and friendly attitude; I hope that if you visit you will feel the same. The Priest in charge is Rev. Michael Read, his wife is the Methodist Minister. The Choir of St.Luke's have gained a national reputation for their skill, professionalism and, quite simply, the quality and beauty of their performances

The main service of the week is the Sunday morning service at 10-45 a.m. but we like to arrive…read moreearly and join in the singing that is led by the worship band. We also like to remain in the church for tea and fellowship after the service, very often we remain behind to join in a 3 course lunch prepared for us by Keith who likes to keep us very well fed !! There is also a well stocked Christian book and card stall. A very good sound system with radio microphones has been installed in the church this is a great help to the hard of hearing and for use at concerts. There is also an inductio loop system for the hearing impaired. There is a disabled ramp at the front of the church and we hope to improve this along with the steps and the installation of disabled toilet facilities very soon. The Sunday School also meet with us at this time leaving before the sermon for there own lessons in another room, but sometimes stay in for the whole service taking a very active part. Singing is led by the worship band or the pipe organ, the Independent Methodist (Red) Hymn book, Hymns and Songs of Fellowship and Spring Harvest books are used as is the over head projector. The church holds a Christian Copyright License. The church is licensed for weddings these can be arranged by contacting the church president or secretary. There is a well kept garden and lawns at the front with a tarmac path from Newton Road up to the front steps here there are hand rails and a ramp for easy access. A tree has recently been planted in memory of some of our members who have died in the past year. At the back of the church is a large private car park for the use of people attending church functions. The church owns a 14 seat mini bus. The House fellowship group meet in homes as announced on Thursday evenings. The Women's Auxiliary unfortunately the WA are not meeting at present. The church operate a Gift Aid envelope scheme, anyone who is a tax payer is welcome to join in the scheme. A Fellowship and study week-end is held each year usually in North Wales, This is a well attended week-end enjoyed by all who attend it is a great blessing to the church family. In partnership with the Epiphany Trust the Church has an interest in the Bryn Arfor Guest House at Amlwch on the Isle of Anglesea. Prayer Groups meet in homes around the area. Lane Head Methodist (No known website) and Lowton Community Church all on Newton Road. All of the Six churches share in regular fellowship and have very good working relationships there are regular joint services in the different Church buildings. The Church was host to the Springtime Choir from Visalia in America who toured with us to Romania, and to the Astra Choir from Brasov, in Romania when they toured the U.K. the members of both visiting choirs were accommodated with families from the church. The both choirs choir gave a concerts in Lowton. The Astra Choir concert was held in St. Catherine's church and was very well attended.
