Being a big fan of waterfalls and having seen many in upstate New York, Vermont, New Hampshire,…read moreWashington State, and Oregon, I wanted to check out some of Hawaii's famous cascades during my stay there. I set out first to Kapena Falls, a little known waterfall located only a 15-minute drive from where I was staying in Honolulu. The most difficult thing about the short hike to Kapena Falls was finding the trailhead. The directions given to me by Apple Maps brought me to Pali Highway, and after just a short distance from where I entered the roadway, I passed it, not catching any signs or markers noting the trail. I made a u-turn to go back to where the map said it was, and luckily, on the other side of the road, there was a turnoff on the highway that I exited onto. I got out of my car, walked over to the guardrail to see if I could see anything below, but nothing. Finally, and I can't recall exactly how I figured this out, but I came upon a website that pointed me to Nuuanu Cemetery, down the hill from Pali Highway. I found the cemetery, but I still had some figuring out to do once I got there in order to find the trailhead for the falls. Eventually, I ended up driving through to the back of the cemetery, where there was a small parking lot with a garage at the end of it. Some hikers in another car pointed me to an unmarked trail towards the left of the garage where I finally reached the beginning of my hike. The hike to the falls was short, only about a half of a mile, and very easy. The trail was beautiful, with lush tropical plants everywhere, and the calming sound of running water from the creek beyond. The atmosphere was much more comfortable in the shade of the trees than my previous hike, and I was the only one around. The falls were unimpressive, but still the experience was worth it. Moments of zen, for sure! In all, I spent about 20 minutes exploring this one, and it was a nice preview for the other waterfall hikes on my list.

I didn't see any homeless and the trail was clean of any trash. No problems with mosquitos, however I always expect them near water sources and carry spray. It's a nice little hike with a pleasant falls and can be combined with other eating points of interest nearby.

It's a beautiful mural already but the cherry on top (no pun intended) is that there's a camera on the top of the building pointing down. There's a computer setup on the wall where you can set the timer to snap a photo of your pose on the mural. Then you can see the photo and even email it to yourself. It's such an unknown gem of Hawaii that provides one amazing postcard.

I couldn't exactly run through the mud because my shoes would sink so far down. It was a great workout! They have obstacle courses throughout-- like a big slide, over and unders, monkey bar things, tire obstacles, and climbing on the beach. The combination of people that go are super awesome. You have military people, groups dressed up, families, and those people who like to just scream randomly! They gave oranges and bananas at the end for all race finishers. MONSTER gave out some drinks for free too. I usually don't drink that, but the zero sugar ones tasted pretty good. It was great to see the yelp family there too. Yelp had a booth that took your picture at the end! If you plan on doing this-- wear your bathing suit underneath. Wear knee high socks (if you don't wear pants) and I recommend bringing a towel, change of clothes with you and flip flops. You have the option to hose off all the mud/dirt at the end. Oh and I borrowed duct tape from some nice strangers. (Thank you to them!) The website and information packet say don't use duct tape on your shoes, but it's necessary if you want to keep your shoes from sticking in the mud. Overall it's a fun run! I only ran parts of it, yet managed to finish in the top 25 for the women's division. So if I can do it-- you can too!

Review 1,808 goes out to Oahu!…read more Oahu Fact: Oahu, Hawaii, is the state's third-largest island but holds roughly 70% of Hawaii's total population. Known as "The Gathering Place," it spans about 597 square miles and serves as the vibrant cultural and commercial hub of the Pacific. Oahu: How do I love thee? Let me count the ways: I love thee to the depth of your impossibly blue waters, the breadth of your mountain ridgelines, and the height of every lookout that steals my breath. I love thee in malasada sugar dust, in plate lunch comfort, in the golden hush of sunset over Waikīkī, and in the trade winds that somehow make even humidity feel like a warm hug. I love thee freely, as one loves a place that asks nothing but your presence. I love thee purely for your rainbows that appear like casual magic and your ability to make strangers soften into vacation versions of themselves. I love thee with the passion usually reserved for life-changing choices like considering whether I could simply never leave. I love thee in shave ice, in plumeria-scented breezes, in "just one more beach stop" lies that somehow become entire days. I love thee with the kind of irrational devotion that has me checking flight prices before I've even boarded my return flight back to Phoenix. I love thee because some of my greatest friends live here. This review was heavily inspired by Elizabeth Barrett Brownings's, How Do I love Thee? (Sonnet 43).

I love walking along Waikiki Beach and seeing the people enjoy the water, sand and surf. I enjoy visiting the many bronze statues depicting various Hawaiian icons. And of course all the fabulous restaurants and happy hours. One of my favorite spots on the Island is Diamond Head. I have climbed the crater many times to watch the sunrise. But I most frequently jog out to the park by Diamond Head Lighthouse and watch the early morning surfers and the sunrise. The jog around Diamond Head is about five miles and, on Saturdays, enjoy the local treats at the KCC Farmer's Market. My favorite spots to visit are Iolani Palace (buy tickets in advance), Pearl Harbor (buy tickets on line), Queen Emma's Summer Home and the State Capitol (free). My first visit to the Island, I took a photography tour with my daughter. We were in a small group that were chauffeured around the island. We made stops to learn various photography techniques. The best part was that we saw the whole island in a day and learned about the various sites. I highly recommend a similar tour, if you only have a short time to visit. The North Shore is a must visit. I commonly saw the big waves at the beaches, turtles and food trucks. I also enjoy hiking and if my family is with me, we try to go on several hikes. The hike to Moana Falls is one of my favorite hikes. The hike to Makapu'u Lighthouse is a great accessible two mile hike if you are pushing a stroller or in a wheel chair (the trails is paved). The views are stunning and I generally see a rainbow. Currently, I am visiting Hawaiian Temple Ruins. There are a number of ruins around the island, each with a different story and history. The beaches all the way around the island are beautiful. Some waters are a bit rough and dangerous, so do your homework before taking the kids. Go early to get parking and take provisions and sun protection. My favorite pastime is to meet the people. They are aloha friendly. I find going to small towns or attending a local event is the best way to meet people. Finally, don't miss the sunrises or sunsets over the ocean. The island of Oahu is a magical place with an incredible unique history and natural and manmade beauty.

We saw some people illegally parked on the street right on the corner, but they didn't care, they would brave a citation just for these amazing treats! I am sure the neighbors who live across from this place think this is a massive headache, to have such a popular chocolate place right in their own neighborhood - either that, or a blessing, since they can just walk right across! There are 4 tiny stalls in the driveway in the front of the Doggie Bakery and this place, but it looks far too challenging to get in and out and onto the main street, which is insanely busy on a weekend. We parked in the neighboring lot and purchased something from another business just so we could get some chocolates here. If the parking situation were better, I'd come back. I purchased the Hokkaido Soft Serve (weekends only, I think), it was delicious but I was expecting more fatty mouthfeel for something that was labeled as "Hokkaido". It was lighter than I was expecting. The chocolates, on the other hand, were fabulous and worth every, expensive, penny. By the way, who the heck nowdays says "worth every penny"? Probably old folks like me who knew what a penny was, and now due to inflation and the Federal Reserve nixxing the penny, it's probably worth 0.0012 cents now. Rainbow Shave Ice - it really does taste like shave ice! I came here mainly for this, as I've heard the hype and the hype is real! Hibiki Whisky Chocolate - nice and lovely. Dubai Chocolate - with gold leaf and everything. The Dubai craze is insane. This was good, but the least of my favorites. Six chocolates + one soft serve = $30.
