Great samba music and initially the server seemed to be super friendly and helpful for someone who doesn't speak Portuguese. It all abruptly ended when it came time for the bill. Was overcharged for the Caipirinha drink first of all...and then when I paid in reals the server disappeared and returned with a credit card machine to attempt to charge me again. Thank goodness I confronted him and he laughed it off and brought me the change from the initial payment. I'm sure it's a local bar and I was attempted to be swindled because I was a tourist. Beware!

My biggest complaint is that I was not able to sleep here. The staff does not regulate the socializing 'after hours'. The bed in the Amazonian room was hard as a rock. The bar/restaurant in front of the hostel is primarily comprised of non-hostel guests. There really is no central area that makes socializing possible. Breakfast is only offered for two hours 7-9am and was not worth getting up for. During my early checkout, the staff did not even offer to compensate. I don't get how people can call this a 'modern' hostel. You can't even put toilet paper down the toilets! I decided to go to an AirBnB for a better night's sleep. BEWARE!

Instead, Riviera is like a corporate office park's answer to high-end dining and drinking. Being a huge fan of Dalva e Dito for its gastronomy and for its ambiance, this was, then, a huge letdown. We sampled the oysters, which were delicious. We also had the fine steak tartare and the queijo na brasa, which approximated the delicious originals served at the beaches of Pernambuco. The fried chicken was not quite above boteco chicken, I'm sad to say. Drinks throughout dinner were consistently delicious, and everyone seemed to enjoy the live music. Although again, the recorded announcement preceding it further lays on that stiff, synthetic feeling to the place. I think this place aimed to be a heavyweight contender, with its all-star roster. But ultimately, it comes off as a profitable side project, with sub-par cuisine rubbed to a shiny and expensive veneer by the owners' fame.

I'm not used to bars being so bright, but it is refreshing to go to a bar with light so you can actually see their lovely face. First, we started with a Skol beer, a Brazilian beer to be exact. It costed R$9 for a 600mL bottle. What a great deal! Then we had Caipirinhas which were utterly strong! The bartender knew I wanted a strong drink, although it was probably too sweet. I was pretty buzzed by the time I finished my drinks. I think it is a good place to pre-drink before heading out to the clubs.

In a city where the usual going out time is, oh I dunno, like 12am, I was really pleased when I heard we'd be meeting around 8/9pm. This made it really easy to mix and mingle and meet people (of which we met many). The many people we met were varied. Lots of gay people (mostly men) and lots of alternative folks. This isn't a cheesy, techno thumping gay bar, so the gay guys here didn't walk around with glitter covered chests. Just the opposite, these were more the kinds of dudes I'd almost always welcome being around. The cocktails were fantastic and when my friend recommended I get the best drink ever... and that the best drink ever is a long island iced tea... I got scared. Very, very concerned that I was heading quickly in the direction of a night I'd likely never forget. But instead, I tried her long island iced tea, and it tasted more like a fancy Brazilian version. Somehow, and I didn't know this was even possible, Igrejinha makes a mean, classed-up long island. The other drinks were great too and the bartender was super cool. After drinking and chatting and watching other people smoke, I hit the dancefloor. It felt something like partying in the 90s -- kinda grungy, but definitely respectable. Will I be back?
