I turned 50 in March and looked down and realized, ah crap I gained weight. I knew from past experience a gym membership was not going to motivate me, and I had fond memories of martial arts in the past. Besides, I was stressing about some personal things so I figured a good way to blow off steam was this place. The dojo: clean, well maintained, doesn't smell like socks. This is difficult to achieve given the amount of sweat people are pumping out. There are changing rooms for women and men and a unisex bathroom. Well lit, easy to find, reasonable parking. Men and women attend the aikido classes, teenagers and old folk. I've seen little kids at the other classes but have no feedback on that. They weren't bleeding or crying when they left so that's good I suppose! The instructor: the Soke Dai is smart. I mean, really, really smart. He's formidable, as you would expect a black belt instructor to be. But -and I can't understate this- he's really damned clever. I'm no expert in martial arts, but I know when something is well thought out. He's level headed, calm, and maintains a positive environment in which you can learn. The instruction is both on classical aikido moves and practical application. That to me is the best part, because applying it to the real world is ultimately the most important part about learning. The students: what a great variety of ages and experiences. Women and men. And I have yet to encounter a person in class that had a crap attitude. I suspect that those people would not be welcome in this dojo. But my experience is that positive instructors attract positive students. Aikido Masters falls into that category. The price: it's martial arts. It's not cheap. BUT!!! It is way more reasonably priced than other dojos I've looked into. Here's what I really appreciate the most about the cost of the class: if I miss a class, I have all year long to make it up. So if my work schedule gets wonky and I can't go for a week, I can make up those classes the next week or the next month or ten months later. I'm not getting stiffed for working to support my family. Final thoughts: I have been dealing with some PTSD from a nasty incident. I told my shrink that I wanted to take aikido and she thought it was a great idea. After checking in with her regularly, she's really happy with my progress and attributes much of my improvement on learning aikido. So while I began the class looking for some physical activity, I have continued to achieve so much more. Balance, friendship, calmness, a sense of a achievement, lower stress, and an appreciation for a martial ART that I was never exposed to before. I hope that your time at Aikido Masters is as good as mine.
