Lake Hopatcong is the largest lake in New Jersey. It is 9 miles in length with 2,500 acres of fresh water. It was once part of the Morris Canal which stretched from Phillipsburg to Newark some 90 miles carrying iron, coal and zinc in the 1800's. Lake Hopatcong has both private and public beach access. Lake Hopatcong State Park has the largest public beach access. Swimming is restricted to Wed.-Sun. from 10am-9:30pm while lifeguards are on duty. The park itself opens at 8am. Lake Hopatcong has a short but nice sand beach and swimming area. Be aware that once the parking area is filled everyone coming later will be turned away. If you get to the park by 8am, hike the short trails or start up your grill for breakfast, lunch or dinner. All the grill areas have picnic tables and most have tree shaded locations. They are first come first serve.. The park also has a boat launch for larger motor boats, kayaks, sailboats, jetskies etc that can be brought unto the lake..A sand court volleyball area, basketball courts, a soccer field and playground equipment are on-site, as well. For those that have a New Jersey fishing license, fishing areas are available. Large mouth bass, sunfish, catfish, perch and pickerel can be caught. In the winter you can ice fish. The restrooms have showers and changing rooms, The concession stand has fair prices and serves burgers, hot dogs, ice cream, funnel cakes, and drinks. Great park! Easy to get to and it was empty due to the beach was closed. No swimmers allowed. We secured an area on the sand and enjoyed the boats, paddlers, jet ski, and kayaking passing by. No loud music, just peaceful. We enjoyed it and would love to return. read more

Such a beautiful lake. We visited yesterday and like to come often to kayak or paddleboard. We went to the grill area and grilled some hot dogs and just enjoyed the nice weather. Stayed around until closing. Bathrooms are fairly clean also read more

Nice, quiet, relaxing little beach. Lots of grass area and shade, but sanded beach area as well. Not big but not too crowded. It's more relaxing beach experience, though admittedly you're certainly missing out on the waves and just overall charm of the ocean - there really is no substitute for that. Still, a nice spot, easy parking for $10/car. Food spot, though predictably overpriced, but not nearly as bad as the shore. All depends on what you're looking for. read more

This was my first time visiting the Park. I was able to get in the lake and use my paddle board with my family. Everyone seem very nice at the state park and very respectful of each other's space. The lake was beautiful I have no complaints about it. The only thing is that the bathrooms are not that well kept, and one of the stalls do not lock. read more

Last day of swimming we arrived a little late everyone was kicked out of the water around 6:50 so definitely not a go to for procrastinators

Came with my husband and a friend on a weekday. Although the location is very pretty, and the atmosphere very relaxed, I was shocked by two things I would have never expected from a "State Park". 1. Dog poop EVERYWHERE. It took us 10 min to find a spot not covered in poop. DISGUSTING. 2. There is NO trash can on-site. I then understood why so much poop around... Would you actually spend all day next to a trash bag filled with your dog poop? 3. Bathrooms were filthy. I wonder honestly what the money is used for. Certainly not for cleaning... Honestly, any public park is WAY cleaner than Hopatcong and it is a real pity given the beauty of the place. read more

Beautiful beach with a grassy knoll overlooking the lake. A great place to spend a weekday afternoon because it gets crowded on summer weekends. Hopefully the algae blooms clear soon so that people can use the beach again. read more

Loved this place. It was a little complicated getting there because online there were different addresses. I was impressed when I first looked down and saw the playground so close to the beach section. The swimming section itself was a small area, but there was only one life guard. It was not crowded whatsoever. Upon entry and paying parking we received a bag for our trash, which was fair but there was nowhere to throw it out when we left. I thought there might be somewhere once we drove out of the parking lot, but we literally had to keep our trash with us until we got home. I wasn't too happy with driving around with a huge bag of trash all the way to NYC. The lake water wasn't bad, but I was snapped at on the leg by some underwater creature, I didn't see it, but I got up quickly and never went back into the water. I had a mark on my leg and that was enough proof. Lol. EDITED TO ADD : MY VISIT WAS ON A FRIDAY, WHEN I RETURNED EARLY ON SATURDAY THE PARK WAS FULL TO CAPACITY!! IT WAS SUCH A DISAPPOINTMENT AND A WASTE OF TIME, HOWEVER I DID FIND ANOTHER PARK 30 MINUTES AWAY WHICH WAS MUCH BIGGER AND NOT CROWDED FOR A SATURDAY !! read more

The grounds were clean. It seemed like everyone was having a great time. The rolling hills behind the lake seemed like a great picnic, lounging, and game area. However, for the amount of people there I wish the swim area was bigger. It seemed pretty crowded when you went in the water. I did not go to the bathroom there, so I do not know how the facilities look. On weekends, it's $10 per car which I think is reasonable, especially for a family event! read more

Great place to spend your hot summer days....not to far from Jersey City (approximately 45 minutes)....clean open space to enjoy BBQ...water is clean and refreshing....staff is friendly and helpful....parking lot is not to far of a walk to the picnic area...the only downfall is you MUST take your garbage with you so it's annoying to drive home with stinky garbage in your car read more

Just get there early, don't make a mess and clean up after yourself. Is that so hard to ask? Follow those rules and you'll love this place.

Great park to hang out do Bar-B-Q's and chill. I went fishing, caught 15 of them. Swam for a while. Way too far away from North Jersey, but was ok. read more

Great place if you can get there in the fall or spring, beautiful walks, cheap boat launch. But in the summer forget people get bussed in and line up starting at dawn by 9 am the park is full and no room for locals. read more

Walking into the public bathroom in this place is like being dropped into a sewer. It is a pig stuy and smells like unwashed butt. The swimming beach lake is murky. I wouldn't let a dog in their let alone a human being. read more

We tried to get here twice on a summer weekend. We were unsuccessful both times. The park fills up very early, making it impossible to get a parking space on the grounds. Either increase the number of parking spots available to the public or stop forcing me to fund this park. This is not fair. Why should I be taxed to pay for something I am not allowed use? read more

Do NOT waste your time trying to come here. Just drove 1 hr 1/2 just to see safety cones blocking the entrance to the place because the parking spots were all filled up! Came super early for nothing. Don't think on coming back either. read more

Beautiful grounds for a picnic and grilling. Families brought their own hammocks, which they tied up between trees. There are built in charcoal grills throughout the park. The park was filled with people and music playing from peoples' radios. The beach was on the smaller side, however they did have nice sand and two beach volley ball nets set up. The water looked nice and clear, but the bottom of the water was rocky. Lifeguards were on duty and you can only swim until 6PM, within the designated areas. There were jet skiers and motorized boats in the water. Unfortunately, there was no place to rent any water sports from the park. The bathrooms were kept fairly clean, however very warm because it's not air conditioned. There is a snack bar to get food and dessert, which you can eat on the beach. When you enter the park they give you a large clear trash bag with your car's information on it... You need to take all of your trash home with you. There is a spot on the lake you can use to put your motorized boat into the water. Boats have to be out of the water by 7PM. $10 to enter by car on the weekend, or $6 during the week. Also... Just a reminder this is a state park, therefore no alcoholic beverages allowed. Gotta get swasted somewhere else! read more
