Though I'm not proud of it, I have been through inpatient at Hazelden Newberg three times. There's so much I could say about Hazelden Newberg, it's hard to consolidate in one review. I had been to treatment before I ever went here. This is by the far the most helpful treatment center I've been to. Staff genuinely is in invested in patients. Everything feels purposeful. For those who have been in state-funded treatment centers, locked door psych wards, or "druggie buggie" sober house type treatment centers, Hazelden Newberg is a breath of fresh air. It is a college campus type experience. You see the schedule displayed every day, and go around campus to your scheduled groups and lectures. The content is usually interesting, and participation is encouraged as long as you are respectful. The biggest thing about Hazelden Newgerg, which is why I gave four stars rather than five, is that you have to put a lot of effort in. This is true of recovery in general, as ultimately you are the one that has to do it. Unlike some other treatment centers, no one is going to find you generally if you don't show up for group. Some people fly under the radar in groups, don't share, and don't do assignments. This last time, I made a concerted effort to do steps 1, 2 and 3 in group. It really is a collaborative process between the patient and the staff here, and if you are not at a point where you are ready to do that, I would seek a more structured treatment center. If you are motivated to do a lot of work in a short time and you have insurance that covers it, (stays here are usually only like 45 days at most), I would consider Hazelden Newberg.

Bird, kept telling me how…read morewonderful my mom was. 14 months ago I found a therapist that actually knew what he was doing and within two sessions he told me that it was my mom that was scaring me. T. Bird kept telling my how wonderful my mom was, because she spoke with her. I killed my self 6 days after I was kicked out of Betty Ford, for reasons that were not disclosed to me. T. Bird and the rest of the staff...you don't know what you're doing. You are destroying people's lives. Thank God, I found a legitimate therapist and never have to deal with Betty Ford's narcissistic counselors, such as T. Bird, again.
