My experience with this school's preschool and Pre-K programs has been extremely disappointing and…read moreconcerning. First, the expectations for children ages 3-5 years old are developmentally inappropriate. Young children are expected to sit still for extended periods, complete multiple worksheets during the day, and are even sent home with multiple worksheets as homework. In addition, children are reportedly watching YouTube videos daily during the school day, which raises questions about the quality and engagement of the learning environment. At this age, learning should be play-based, interactive, and developmentally appropriate -- not focused on making children behave like robots sitting at desks completing worksheets. Communication within the school is also a serious issue. There appears to be a major disconnect between teachers and administration, particularly the principal. Parents are often left out of important information. For example, children are sometimes moved to different classrooms for the day without any notification to parents, meaning your child may not even be with the teacher you met during orientation and expected them to be with. Safety concerns are another major problem. Parents are required to walk preschool children down an alley that opens directly to a busy street, and there is no barrier or gate in place, despite repeated claims that one would be installed. During winter, the ground is often not properly cleared, creating slippery and unsafe walking conditions, especially when managing young children in poor weather. Pick-up procedures are also poorly thought out. At the same time preschoolers are being dismissed from the building, older students are sent to gym through the same exit, creating a crowded and chaotic situation on the stairs and in the doorway. This creates unnecessary safety risks for young children when something as simple as delaying preschool dismissal by a few minutes could prevent the congestion. Another alarming concern is the school's lack of attendance accountability. Parents are told they must call in if their child is absent and that authorities may be contacted if a child is unaccounted for. However, after forgetting to call my child in sick, I realized the school never contacted me at all. After testing this several times, it became clear that the school does not reliably track attendance or notify parents when a child does not show up, and the absence is not even reflected in the online portal. For a school responsible for young children, this lack of oversight is deeply troubling. Overall, the school demonstrates poor communication, questionable safety practices, and unrealistic expectations for very young children. Families looking for a preschool or Pre-K program that prioritizes developmentally appropriate learning, clear communication, and strong safety standards may want to carefully consider other options

There appears to be discrimination and unequal treatment among students. Some students are disciplined much more harshly than others. In situations where racial slurs have reportedly been used between students, there did not appear to be the same level of accountability as there is for much smaller rule violations. Some teachers frequently yell at students and threaten them with write-ups for minor issues. Students have even been asked to lift their shirts to check for belts or lift their pant legs to ensure their socks meet uniform requirements, which can feel humiliating and excessive. There is also a lack of support for students who need help academically. Instead of going above and beyond, some teachers seem unwilling to assist students and may even make it harder for them to succeed. Students deserve a respectful environment where they are supported and treated fairly. This school is NOT for everyone. This school is NOT for black families. they are racist, they discriminate and the white students even recognize how poorly and unfairly the black students are being treated. The school is small enough that teachers could get to know all their students. They absolutely do not care to get to know them individually. Even during class parties and days they're to have fun time, they aren't truly allowed to have fun. The teachers constantly snap and yell at these kids. I've never seen school like this in my life. If you're black, they basically want you to act like a robot. These teachers don't have the slightest clue about diversity.

I was so excited for my daughter to attend Heights because I thought it was a good school. My daughter started Heights in 2023, ever since then this has been the WORST experience I have had from grades not being accurate to a secretary going into my daughter's student record and making changes. This is the worst school system I reported this misconduct to the school board and the superintendent. The superintendent asked a "chief of schools " to look into this and nothing happened to the staff member they all just covered up for her but my daughter was recommended for expulsion. While she was not expelled she was told she should enroll in AEP-Alternate to Expulsion Program. First of the administration I believe is corrupt. My daughter in no way should have been removed from the school. I reported this to Cleveland Heights-University Heights School district, the school board and the superintendent and NOTHING was done.

My daughter is an 8th grader this year at Hathaway Brown middle school and she has been telling me how at lunch her and her eight friends want to sit together. So they have been sitting at two connected tables that equal eight seats for each girl (apparently this table has always been like this). But suddenly they've been noticing that the other half of there table keeps getting moved to be apart of another half table, so they keep having to move the other half table back and forth every lunch day just so they can sit together. (They can't switch to another table because all of them are taken up by different grades/people). So one day my daughters friend is moving the other half of the table like usual and then out of no where apparently a teacher comes screaming at her to not move the table and that nobody can move tables anymore. So now there is only room for six girls at the table so they decide to grab two more chairs to squeeze into the table to include there two friends, that is very nice. But the same teacher comes out and starts screaming at the same girl again about how they cannot move chairs at all. Why does it matter so much? My daughter said that the teacher said that it's ok the six girls will sit at a table and the other two will sit at a table alone be cause they need to engage with other kids an snake new friends. I'm sorry but that is excluding two girls from the rest of there friend group and that's also breaking apart a strong friendship with the girls. It's the 8th grade everybody has there groups by now and they know who they like and don't like, and if they don't have that then there is definitely something wrong with your kid. Hathaway Brown School is a good school but they are just so weird about the whole friend thing, don't send your kids here if you don't like this.

With the cost of the school (close to or exceeding tuition for an undergraduate degree each year) I was genuinely shocked that Hathaway Brown's first solution was to ask us for more money for a private tutor within a month ! If you have a child with additional needs, do not go to the school. I do believe that the teachers genuinely care about the students, other than one of the female math teachers who is basically a bully. Summary statement: if you're the kind of parent who has to ensure your child has every advantage to get into an Ivy League school at any cost, send her to HB. Just realize that the school caters to superstars. And if your daughter is not one of them, she will be made to feel pretty bad about herself and placed under extreme pressure until you unenroll her or comply with paying for multiple extracurricular tutors.

She started in the primary program, completed that three-year learning cycle, and is now in the elementary program as a 1st grader. Cleveland Montessori stays true to the Montessori method outlined by Dr. Montessori, and in these turbulent times, especially in the public education and curriculum space, it is comforting to know that my daughter is learning from the time-tested materials. The other thing that is important to me about raising children in our culture is that the school is screen-free. The children have a warm, analog space to love to learn for a lifetime. Lastly, it has to be noted that the school is housed in a century-old building with character, nestled in historic Little Italy blocks away from University Circle, and they walk (in all weather) to a fabulous playground in the neighborhood! No Cameras, No Accountability…read more My child was enrolled in the Newborn room at Heights One World from April 2021-January 2022. During that span of time, we picked him up to discover two serious injuries that were not disclosed to us by an incident report or phone call. The first incident was a dislocated left elbow which took place in June when he was only 7 months old. There was no explanation as to how or when it happened, but it was clear that our child was distraught and completely not using one arm until we got it x-rayed and a doctor popped his elbow back into place. This type of injury is not uncommon, but it is caused by being picked up inappropriately by the arms instead of the armpits. We were told by the teachers and administrators that our child would be safe there and that additional care would be provided to ensure that nothing like that would happen again. Looking back, we deeply regret not withdrawing him at that point because the second incident was significantly worse. In January, when our son was 14 months old, we arrived at the daycare and could hear him crying in a very painful, unusual way. We had never seen him like this before. When we asked about what happened, we were told that the crying started after one floating teacher/aide was left alone with him to change his diaper. This person was also present/in the room when the first incident happened. After taking him to the doctor and getting him x-rayed, we discovered that his right arm was fractured. We were not only concerned for our child's safety, but the safety of other children. We contacted the police to file a report and then contacted the daycare administrators to provide a written record of the information that we knew thus far. We had so many unanswered questions and requested a meeting. Their response, prior to learning about law enforcement being contacted, was essentially that if there is no incident report then there was no incident however, they would meet with us. They claimed to have interviewed with the teachers in the Newborn room and the information had changed from what was said to us the day we picked him up and what was said to us via text messages, to now a new story that protected the daycare staff from being implicated. Instead of showing concern for our child's wellbeing, they were incredibly defensive. Then, after the investigation began, the administrators contacted us again to say that they would no longer be interested in a meeting or resolution with us. That kind of behavior would be shocking and disturbing to any parent. It reinforced the need for us to trust our gut as we did to get the authorities involved. Our son was put in a cast for two weeks (as shown in the photo) and upon getting it removed, struggled to begin crawling again. He continues to have a trauma response anytime he is up on a traditional changing table because that is most likely how/where he fell and broke his arm. I truly appreciate how quickly the local police department, state licensing agency, and CPS responded to this case. We knew that without cameras in the facility or employees that are willing to tell the truth, it would be hard to get answers. The person directly responsible for causing harm to our child has not come forward, but the case is still open. If you have any information that could be relevant to this case, please reach out to us. I continue to look back on the experience and just wish it didn't have to come to this. If they had cameras installed after the first incident, this could have been avoided. Still to this day, they do not have cameras which says a lot about how seriously they're taking these claims and striving to do better. Be better! For the safety of our kids. While I feel sadness and empathy for how truthful this review is, it is not done with ill will or malice. Parents that are looking for a safe place for their children are looking for honesty in order to have an informed opinion. I hope that this can serve as an understanding of our experience at this daycare.
