I had no idea what this place was. I just saw a cute pup on NextDayPets.com that fell in our price range. It wasn't until I went to the pet store that I started to worry. The trainer asked where I got him & said, "oh, Lancaster county" which raised my suspicion. I knew I shouldn't have looked but I searched for the last name online & found this Yelp page. I started putting it all together & I just got angry. Upon the vet visit 4 days after getting Sammy, he has a severe yeast infection in his ears and has tested positive for Giardia for a total of $400 in vet bills AND has to go back to be tested in a month for another $80. Do not support this place. Stay as far away as possible. I'll be happy when this headache of health issues is over and (hopefully) this place is shut down. UPDATE: Sam still has Giardia, even after 2 rounds of treatment. He's experienced constant eye ulcers which require a visit almost every month. Luckily for us though, everything else seems fine. No heart issues (yet), no other eye problems or genetic issues. read more

I've just spent a lot of time working to find a puppy for my kid's for Christmas. We aren't dog crazy, we're just a normal family. So we had some choices to make. We looked at all the local shelters to think about rescuing a shelter dog, but today they are almost all Pit bulls. I guess people who think they want pit bulls predominantly don't want to live up to the responsibility to keep them. I don't like pit bulls and don't want one. My nephew has a Shiba Inu and my boys love her and so, they wanted one of these. I found one far away that didn't work out at the last minute, so we found 4 here at Horning's. I was wary because of the of reviews I found, but on puppyfind.com the puppies listed looked robust and my phone conversations went well with Anna Horning. I know they are a "broker kennel" and that the area breeders put their pups in her place for marketing. But, we'd researched true AKC Shiba breeders with their non-refundable $500 deposits and $2000 puppies and 2 year waiting lists, and we had been to KoreaK9rescue.com events where 100 families try for 15 puppies on a merit based system. We only wanted a healthy, non-akc lovely puppy for Christmas. At Anna's place we found a very well made kennel w/about 25 litters of puppies. About 10 had kennels with outdoor runs, the other 15 were indoors. All where well constructed with ample room and waste management. Anna was friendly and quick to show us everything there. She provided our puppy's vaccination records and together we gave him his last booster shots and de-wormer. This is a farm... one where we paid $600 for a very nice puppy. He is adequately socialized and normal-minded, and I understand how an operation like this would administer vaccines without a vet visit. We got a tour of all their pups... and most all, of a variety of mixed breeds, looked great! Honestly, there were a few older ones (a collie and a border collie) which did not look "right" by my standards of how these breeds look.. but by and large, there pups looked vibrant, healthy and well cared for... even if they are not AKC, or if you are not going to have to submit a resume, will, and home photos to pass an adoption test! I would call Anna if you see if a pup she has listed that you like and make the drive to see her. I think she would not mislead you. She gave us dry food for change-over, a can of wet, wee-wee- pads, some pills to avoid diarrhea because of water change and the pups vaccination records. There are some old reviews here from people I think did not understand this operation. Anna was kind to these puppies as we all played with them. I think she treats them well and there are nice puppies to find here as long as you are watchful about the puppy you pick out. We know these are not the best dogs. But, based on what I saw, these puppies are happy and well cared for while they wait for their forever homes! read more

I wish I could give this place zero stars, or even just a big fat red flag that says "absolutely not unless you want to support the hellish and contemptible practice of puppy milling." After speaking on the phone with the woman in charge of this place, it became obvious that this place is a broker for puppy mills. I asked her where the puppies come from and if she owns the parents, and she flat out said "not at all." Instead she allegedly gets them from friends and neighbors around town. This sounded like complete BS to me so I decided to dig a little deeper and see what I could find. When I simply brought up the word "Puppy Mill," the woman froze and didn't know what to say. She literally didn't say a complete word (only stutters) for 15 seconds before I changed the topic. If you even just look at their website, there are too many red flags to count. Go check it out yourself. I would bet the devil my soul that this place is part of the puppy mill supply chain. Do not buy these people unless you are heartless. You cannot support this practice, especially not by buying "out of sympathy" b/c people like these leach off the sympathy and compassion of the greater populace like ticks. Found Horning's on Next Day Pets and saw a pic of a Lab Mix. Just what we were looking for. Read many of the reviews, good and bad, and must say our experience was great. Yes it smells like a kennel, but not nearly as bad as some I've been to. Mr. Horning was friendly and accommodating. And the pup was happy and full of energy with no evident problems. Appears well cared for and has been a joy. Now it's true she is not housebroken or leash trained, but in reality that's our job and I prefer it that way. Thank you Mr. Horning for the wonderful addition to our family. read more

The puppies do come from a puppy mill. I bought my first puppy (maltipoo) here over 5 years ago. I got a discount on him due to his over bite. Other than that he was healthy. My husband and I bought a puppy (yorkipoo) here last year (2017). After taking him to the vet we found out he had severe giardia. He was puking and having diarrhea everywhere. This cost us over $500 to treat him at the vet. I recommend taking the puppy to the vet prior to purchasing the puppy from this farm. Other than that the puppy is now healthy and we love him dearly. read more

We have been looking for a pug since we lost our beloved Mr MaGoo a year ago. When took the 4 hour trip and found a tiny bugg and her brother, a bigger bugg. (Mostly pug but with a little French Bulldog added in). We fell in love with both and took them both. They were so sweet all the way home. Slept most of the way. And then reality hit!! They had never been outside and didnt know they were supposed to go outside for potty. When we put them on a leash the act like a bucking bronco! They are afraid of everything and want to chase every car that goes by. I am so hurt and dissapointed. Now i need to find someone that can train puppymill puppies. I just can't do it. I feel so bad for them but i am exhausted after only 2 days. Help! I want to keep them but i pray there is someone that can take and train them. Esp the bigger one. I might be Able to do the tiny one. I am 77 and hubby is 80. I am so stressed. Does anyone have any information to help. Thanks. Eileen read more

This is a puppy mill in disguise. There was a really sick dog by itself in one cage. Very strange feeling. I took the dog anyway, but it wasn't until I left that I really started to think how strange it was. Then I did a little research how these farms buy from puppy mills. DO NOT BUY A DOG FROM HERE!!! I am choosing three stars because I am conflicted by the things I have read in the other reviews. Personally, our experience was a 5-star. I DETEST the idea of a puppy mill. That said, my experience with this farm was very positive. We looked for a puppy to replace a beloved Bichon that my mom lost in January due to a fairly long battle with congestive heart failure. We first tried to buy rescue but could not find puppies that would suit my mom's needs either in Pittsburgh where I live or near her home in Williamsport. Most rescues were bigger dogs (that my mom could not handle) or pit bulls. I searched the internet for weeks trying to find a way to purchase a dog for my mom. For all the dog advocates out there I would suggest organizing a little better so that potential puppy mills are clearly outed. I need more to go on than a potentially disgruntled customer posting a bad review. Not saying that is what is going on here, just saying that something more official would have been more helpful when shopping around. We purchased a Shih Tzu who is beautiful and wonderful! I fell in love with him the first time I saw him and he is EVERYTHING I picked up on him being from his pic. I found the place to be clean, and the people polite. There were a bunch of puppies running around playing - all seemed well socialized plus there were two women playing with and holding them. Yes, there were cages (I didn't find that to be odd or abusive - I mean we crate our dogs when needed) and there were several Chihuahuas in one cage but they seemed to have plenty of room to be comfortable. I assumed maybe a young litter would prefer being together??? What I am saying is that I suppose you could interpret some of the conditions to be bad; I did not because the dogs seemed happy and healthy. When we got our puppy to his new home he was shy for about one half hour and then he was certainly "home." (I may note that the instant we put him in his carrier in the car he seemed very comfortable and he stayed near the front of the cage rather than cowering in the back, which I thought was indicative of a healthy and curious puppy). He was equally comfortable with my mom and my husband and I. Nothing at all seemed amiss about him. He is well behaved and even seems like maybe he has had some training already. We too got the care package of food, diarrhea pills, puppy pads, and paper work. We were told not to give the diarrhea pills if he didn't seem effected by the change in water or emotional changes after four days; which he didn't. He eats and drinks well and had healthy stool from the first "offering." He had his first vet appt. yesterday and the doctor (and three assistants) fell all over him. They said he was perfectly healthy. I hate the idea that I could have supported a puppy mill. Either way I know we purchased a precious puppy and gave him a wonderful and loving home. My advice to all would be to continue to fight the fight by shutting down puppy mills by exposing them in some very official and public way. In the meantime, these little angels need homes too and I don't think people should be guilted into not buying them. read more

I recently got a puppy from them and it broke my heart walking into the place and seeing tons of different types of puppies locked up in cages. I really wanted to turn around and leave and call the 6 hour round trip road trip a bust. But I took one anyways. Please don't make the same mistake I did! Your heart will break I promise you! It was so sad to see so many puppies in cages. It's obvious this is unfortunately a puppy mill. I went to pick up Gary on Saturday 1/13/18 and what I saw at Anna H place was horrifying and heartbreaking. When you first walked in you were slammed with the overwhelming smell of dogs and feces. She greeted us and then she brought out all the goldendoodles she had (who by the way were extremely terrified of her and her husband. One puppy was so frightened he yelled and peed on my daughter.) all of the goldendoodles came from the back, she had a can of food, and had the puppies lick them off her hand. She took me to the back to show me some more pups that weren't goldendoodles and one small peek-a-poo was choking on her collar, immediately screamed for Anna that the dog was choking and if i hadn't noticed she could of choked to death, once Anna came I helped her cut the collar off. I wanted so bad to take her with me too. I ended up taking Gary because my daughter wanted to take all of them after seeing how Anna H handled them, she grabbed the puppies by the head or the leg and lifted them up and her husband lifted the puppies by their neck. All of the dogs are referred to as being numbers as if they were livestock.I have never seen such barbaric treatment towards dogs. I would say her place is a puppy mill in disguise. I am sorry I contributed by buying but at the same time we rescued Gary from that awful place. Once I took Gary home and got him checked out by the vet he was extremely ill with giardia a parasite from eating feces (due to the horrific conditions) and he had kennel cough and was under weight. Currently Gary is on a slew of antibiotics. read more

I am not sure why all the bad yelp reviews are listed and the good are hidden? Is this most likely a puppy mill? Yes. I purchased my Golden Retriever, Lily from them in 2007. She is now 9 years old and has not had one health problem. She is by far the happiest dog we have ever owned and you can take her anywhere, hotels, other homes, stores, etc... They were up front with me that she was ACA registered, which did not matter to me. The only problem we had with her in the beginning was that she had Giardia, most likely from drinking dirty water at the place. We have had 3 other Golden Retrievers, all AKC registered and all had terrible health problems. I don't condone puppy mills by any means as I am involved in my local Golden Retriever Rescue. I am just saying she has been the best dog we have had regardless of where she came from. read more

The truth is they are brokers, the Amish have been breeding dogs for a very long time. For the price you know what you're getting into but the facilities are nicer than most. I purchased a perfect english bulldog and she hasn't had one problem. I plan on going back to get a playmate for her. Here's the thing if we don't purchase these puppy mill dogs what happens to the dog. You can't say you want puppies or dogs treated humanely and then leave them there to be kept in cages or worse. Pet stores keep there dogs and cats in small cages, does it make it right because you're paying a higher price. If you buy from here you are in a sense rescuing a dog. read more

I bought a puppy from here Several years ago. I was told she had a hernia. I called the vet before I agreed to make a visit. My vet told me it was normal for puppies from larger liters to have hernias and it could be fixed when she gets spayed. I went down to see the pup, she stole my heart. The place made me a little uncomfortable because of all the different breeds in cages. When I asked about the parents I was told, the liter came from a friend. I decided to adopt the puppy and they gave me a "discount" because of the hernia. I brought the puppy to a vet for an initial check-up within the first 5 days of her being my pet. The vet informed me due to the size of her hernia she was unfit for sale, but other than that she was healthy. She would need surgery right away to prevent the hernia form tearing open. The vet informed me this wouldn't compromise her well-being in the future. I had already had her for several days and wanted to keep her. I called the farm to tell them about the situation and asked if they could do anything to help. She tried to convince me to bring her back to have their vet take care of it, or return her and switch her for another dog. I declined because I felt the pup would be better off with my vet. She ended up sending me a check to cover half the cost of the surgery. My dog is currently happy and healthy, but I would not "buy" another pet from her. I will definitely adopt a shelter pet in the future read more

The facility was clean but make no mistake, this is a broker for puppy mills. We knew what it was when we got there but fell in love with a German Shepherd puppy. She can be registered AKC but we chose not to. I've had a lot of Shepherds in my life and can tell you this puppy was removed from the mother too early as she was not taught puppy manners. She was also terribly unsocialized and even though she ran right to us, her fear of people will be a life long issue. Bottom line though is that we love her dearly. She's been spayed and is in great health. I would not recommend supporting this facility but I'm happy to say that this puppy won the lottery with us. read more

I just bought my Son a puppy there. I find people to be very senseless and ignorant, with no mind of there own, following suit with everyone else....it's a quaint little "farm", just like Dairy farms, pig farms, horse farms where animals are loved and cared for. We love our healthy puppy and the horning's are great people. The rest of you who post your ignorant comments need to take a ride to "review" local shelters, private "dog breeders", pet stores and you will see the Horning's place is not such a bad place after all...God Bless.... read more

If you are looking for a sick, unsocialized, dehydrated and starved puppy this is the place to go!! After my two male Siberian Huskies passed we have been in the market for another one. My fiancé found this " farm" and gave them a call. The woman was very friendly and told us she had several litters of huskies we could choose from. So we piled in the car for the 2 1/2 hour drive from Emmaus to Mifflinburg. Upon our arrival I was heartbroken to see we had walked, not into a breeder, but a puppy broker. They only had 2 Sibes but many different breeds stuffed in cages, some having 4-5 dogs in one small crate with a lid. We took the boy home, along with a puppy care package. This included " shot records" puppy pads, ACA registration form, cheap dog food, and white pills he told us would get rid of any diarrhea he might have. After about 4 days of having the boy and many cases of explosive diarrhea we decided we had to get his sister out of there. They were riddled with parasites and after having them for over a month now we are just beginning to quell the stomach issues. My vet told me they will never be able to digest dog food because they were given a heavy duty dewormer that ruined their intestines. After doing some research I found these dogs and countless others come from a facility in New York that houses 600-700 dogs and removes puppies from their mothers at 5 weeks. Yes this place is a part of the puppy mill chain, and as much as we've been told it's frowned upon to support it, as a human being with a heart there was no way I could have left both of them behind. Behind all of the country charm, and cute puppies what these people are doing is illegal and unethical. If you wish to rescue one of these babies i urge you to do so, but be prepared for what you will see, and what you will experience trying to raise your puppy. These little ones have suffered enough at the hands of these people, I can only pray and hope that other people feel the way I do, and save one of these tiny lives. read more
