This is far from fine let alone the finest and there are far better pubs within ten minutes of here. Before you read any further you should know that for what is a fairly remote pub this is far from driver friendly - just shy of £4 for a tonic water is pretty disappointing if you have had to drive - which most do. As for the food the menu is pretty outdated and very bland. The quality of the food was also poor. The pork was on special and was barely edible - it was so chewy the majority of it got left on the plate. I had the rump steak which was very bland and poorly cooked - at £17 I would expect much better. The cider was very nicely kept and well served - Aspall's Harry Sparrow... Although it was raining today I can see how the Mayfly might be nice for a drink on a hot summer afternoon; with numerous tables on the edge of the river this pub sits in a beautiful location. I would not return here for food but will definitely go back for a couple of drinks on a lazy day with nice weather. The staff were are worth a note. Extremely friendly, helpful and attentive.

After a visit to the impressive and informative website we booked a room for a Sunday in mid June. Our late afternoon Sunday evening arrival was greeted with sunshine and Calvin checked us in and showed us to our room, which was stunning. We weren't sure what to expect in such a tiny village but it's fair to say that no expense was spared in the fitting out of the new bedrooms block in a building separate from the main pub / restaurant. The linens were gorgeous, the bathroom spacious and the rooms well fitted with all mod cons! We had dinner in the dining room with some old friends who came over form South Petherton. They hadn't been in a while but were happy for an excuse to dine at the Red Lion as the food has a good reputation among the locals. No one was disappointed and a decent wine list and selection of real ales helped to make the evening very sociable. Breakfast was fresh and tasty and served with individually and freshly ground coffee, which was a perfect way to start a buy day of site seeing. We didn't check the wardrobe on our way out and realized when we got to Stonehenge that we had left our jackets behind. A couple of phone calls later and Calvin was on the case eventually and graciously getting our jackets to Dublin for us. All is now good in the world. We'd highly recommend the Red Lion in Babcary.

The Red Lion is split into two eating areas: restaurant and pub. The pub is lovely and cosy, and we chose to et here. The food is your typical gastronomic fare and we tucked into paella and the lamb shank, though the menu varies daily. Dessert was also excellent, particularly recommend the affogato. It seems to be very popular with locals in the area, and you'll see a very full car park on arrival (you have to drive due to remoteness). Listen to the owner's recommendations, he's very eccentric but obviously passionate about the food they serve.

We had heard that the pub was open again after the previous tenant failed to open shop one day before Christmas. It's a lovely pub but hard work and the last guy took his eye off the ball. Now there is new young blood at the helm and I don't know their names which is a shame. Anyway, we were made very welcome and allocated a window table and three menus. It had to be roast beef or lamb and we all went for the beef at £9.25. There was plenty of choice for a chef specialising in fresh local produce and we could have chosen a burger or bass for instance. Anyway, thank goodness we didn't because the roast lunch we were to experience was the best we have sampled for a long time and just about warranted a 10 out of 10. Beautiful meat, rib we think, homemade Yorkshire pudding, beautifully roasted potatoes and parsnips with separate dishes of cauliflower in a bechamel sauce, broccoli, carrots, sugar-snap peas and mashed swede and we all got our own little jug of proper gravy. Piping hot, tasty and great value. The puddings are delicious as well especially the panacotta. So please go along and support this young couple who have just the right approach just and they have trained their staff to achieve the same warm, helpful attitude.

The food was delicious, and the hosts friendly with good service. Highly recommend the indulgent lemon cheesecake. Well priced, good quality food with MASSIVE portions. The rooms are also wonderfully decorated with comfy beds, nice selection of teas, coffees and homemade biscuits along with fluffy towels and nice toiletries. The only trouble I had is that although it is in the middle of nowhere the road is quite busy and my room was nearest it and therefore very busy. Unfortunately as we had to be up at 5am we didn't get to try their breakfast but the selection looked fantastic. Bewarned if you arrive out of pub hours, they lock up and it can take a while to get someone to open the pub and check you in!

There is ample parking and it is in a location where it is accessable to passing trade and easy to find. The natterjack is located between Shepton Mallet and Castle Cary. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. The pub gets quite busy so it might pay to book at table on busy night like weekends. We were down that way for the bank holiday weekend, we were staying in Yarlington but the pub there…read morewas fully booked, sooo we drove to the Montague Inn, a warm welcom from the landlord and he had tables available so we decided to eat there, 3 courses (I can recommend the Thai Style Fishcakes as a starter) Free Range Chicken wrapped in parma ham and a cheeseboard and coffee to finish all washed down with a couple of bottles of sparkly (bin end champagne that he gave to us a bit cheap) Fantastic views across the Somerset countryside and if you get the right day you could tell the sunset would have been fantastic.....if I was ever back in this part of the world I would definitely recommend The Montague Inn, but you do need to either pay for a cab or have a designated driver.
