Only slight quibble a tablespoon of chunks of young carrot and slices of corgette at the height of the vegetable season didn't quite cut it for me, but still far better than that usually offered elsewhere. My Otter Bitter was cyrstal clear and was a delight to drink. Staff were quietly attentive and even kept up their attention for desserts but then forgot to offer coffee or the bill. But again far better service than usually found. For once the staff paid attention to food adversions, were responsive and even offered choices! Prices at the high pub end but tolerable. A warm welcoming atmosphere without needing to become bosom pals and a nice mix and balance of clientel. Miss this at your peril.

The lounge area is comfortable and very nicely decorated. The staff were very pleasant, and our room was very nice and overlooked their large beer garden. The bath was small, with a shower and nice fluffy towels. There was a TV and tea kettle in the room. We went to the lounge for drinks before dinner and enjoyed them while using the free WiFi. The staff were pleasant and attentive, and the lounge area is set up so you seem almost alone even with many other guests are about. There are several dining areas, all very nice. The tables are set so you can have an intimate dinner. The menu was varied and the food we had was exceptional. We started with the cheese plate. 4 local cheeses, all very good and a wonderful fruit chutney (£9). For mains, I had the lamb ribs, which were delicious (£20), and my wife had the fillet of hake (£12), also very nice. I had a glass of Argentine Malbec that was very good (£18/ bottle, £6.50 for a 250ml pour). My desert was a trio of their very good home made ice creams (£5).

This…read moreplace offers what you might expect in any decent pub, a large selection of beers, lagers and real ales as well as really good food. I'd compare this with the Queens Arms (see my earlier review) as the nearest thing to it, although the Rose & Crown benefits from having a large garden out the back making this THE place to go when it's sunny. The pub is in a beautiful setting, great for walkers and not too far from town to be worth the trip. We regularly leave the car here and get a taxi back into Yeovil or Sherborne which sets us back less than a tenner. There's regular live music and a healthy following of locals who are always in there, regardless. I've introduced this place to a number of guys from work, who now regularly take clients here for lunch.
