They are very clever in their approach in finding out your personal and financial information. Don't be fooled by their niceness, it is only a trick to see how much your dying family member is worth then they come in for the big pay day. The home aide that were sent to my home search around in my personal space looking for valuables to steal. They will offer to clean your house on the side and ask not to inform the managers of hospice. Please safe-guard your personal assets in your home and confidential paperwork. If they offer to place a lock-box on your door for easy access, decline and watch them very carefully. Do not divulge any unnecessary details about your financial life or profession, this is one method of seeing how sophisticated the families are before they take advantage.

The women who hadn't yet taken their final vows, the CNA's took care of my wife with love and respect. They WERE doing God's work. The housekeeping staff, the activity directors and all the volunteers as well. The nurses, not as well but reasonably professional. The administration - Not so much! When my wife expressed a concern she had for her safety I followed the procedure and went to the nurse on duty. NO was her answer. Nothing like this happens. I went to Sister Damien's admissions receptionist, Joann. I heard from her, "DO YOU KNOW WHO YOU'RE TALKING TO?!" Sister Damien told me brusquely everything is fine and my wife was drugged, dreaming or otherwise creating something out of nothing. Sister Stella, the main administrator, listened to what I had to say and did her best to put me off. Not one of these expressed and wish to speak with my wife and I felt that there was NO empathy shown and perhaps little respect. I only saw what appeared to be closing ranks and loyalty to the order (Cult?). The receptionist I can forgive because I know she's a recent convert to the Catholic faith and I have seen that this creates a certain over zealousness in the time after confirmation. The lack of respect and/or empathy by the sisters I find reprehensible though. Another issue was that the nurses would not allow my wife to leave the bed, instead telling her to defecate in place. and they could clean it afterward. They claimed this was a matter of the Foley catheter and that she was a fall risk. I had been my wife's caregiver for several months and was able to get her properly to the toilet. My feeling was that was contrary to the idea of death with dignity. Please understand that this is my opinion based upon my recollection of the events that took place more than three months ago, but I am quite sure I have accurately described the events.

When they sent a nurses aid, she couldnt do the work, and when i told hospice this, the woman who sent the aid became very defensive, and retaliating. I was very upset with the lack of care and professionalism. In my fathers case, they ordered a bunch of old equipment that was not needed and then the company sends huge bills for thousands of dollars, and make threats to place liens on bank accounts and property....what a scam. Never in my whole life have i Experienced such a terrible organization that had ties with another company where they order used medical equipment without any concent or authorization on equipment that was old and not required, yet hospice ordered it and then we get hit with insane bills and threats of liens when there was clearly no reason to send this stuff in the first place by hospice. Then hospice left right afterwards and the equipment was never picked up for over 10 months and both organizations failed to or intentionally left this equipment in order to run up a huge bill without any notice of any issues regarding payments or understanding of what was going on up until now. The same used type of equipment can be found on ebay for anywhere between 10 to 100 bucks or less....what a scam.

Stay away from their palliative program, after doing an intake, being a palliative program patient…read morenow for several years with a dr who is retiring, this program just ghosted me and left me hanging. They do not return calls as promised, and are not equipped to be doing palliative care outside of the hospice work they do. Their nurses know better than The Hospital For Special Surgery, neurology at Westchester Med, my present palliative/hospice Dr and my primary Dr and deemed me not a palliative patient, but...the problem was they refused to call and tell me! They just ghosted me. Very cruel and unprofessional practice. The public needs to be warned about their palliative program they started, it is cruel in the way it practices. Public, be warned.

If you just want morphine, this place will work out fine. If you don't like them charging thousands to Medicare while not treating your family member right, then look elsewhere--try home health care instead of hospice--seeing as how we have very little choices here for hospice care.

I waited a month after my mother's passing to write this review so I could have some distance and…read moreperspective from the events. I contracted with Alvita to care for my mother during the last two months of her life after she was injured in a fall. I paid for 24 hour home care seven days a week. Other than Fabienne, I found the caregivers sorely lacking in the most basic of qualities such as companionship and emotional support. Also, other than Fabienne, the one on one care for which they were hired (toileting, hygiene assistance, dressing, grooming, feeding, etc) was mostly delegated by them to the staff at the assisted living facility where my mother resided, which negated the whole point of hiring them in the first place. Chronic lateness was also the norm. Most arrived 10-20 minutes late for the start of the night shift The night shift crew was especially problematic. In addition to generally not performing the basic tasks for which they were hired ("it's not my job" was the common refrain, even though it literally was their job), they often did not even stay in the same room as my mother who was a fall risk. Some slept on the sofa in the living room during the night shift, some spent the night shift doing schoolwork in a separate room, and some spent hours of the night shift on their phone in the hallway outside of the apartment. The complaints became so numerous from the staff at the assisted living facility and from the hospice nurses that I eventually had to change agencies for the night shift. Three of the low points during the Alvita night shift require special mention. (1) There was the night that my mother sat in her own feces for the entirety of the night. When Hospice arrived in the morning, the waste was dry and hard and had been there all night, despite a 12 hour Alvita shift. (2) Many nights, my mother was put to bed at 7 PM for convenience sake without any social interaction or kindness on the part of the aide. (3) My mother suffered a skin tear on her arm the night after I complained about the aides sleeping on the job. I was told that she injured herself, but there are no witnesses other than the Alvita aide involved. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Fabienne. She was the primary Alvita daytime aide for my mother. Fabienne went above and beyond the call of duty. She exuded kindness and compassion. She took the utmost care of my mother and treated her with dignity and respect. When Fabienne was on the job, the staff at the assisted living facility and the hospice staff took a break because everyone knew that she had everything under control. This is the level of care advertised by Alvita and the level of care that I paid for, but only Fabienne met the mark. Not only did she meet expectations, but she blew everyone away with her level of care.

No facility is perfect. Knew names of 2 nurses that stood out for their professionalism and care : Edguardo (4th floor)and Renee(3rd floor) RN Joanne appeared to act better than the others but was actually the worst - spoke to visitors with an attitude. She took away from the decent image I took Sky View for. CNAs did the best they could with the staff that they had each day. Seemed to exhibit comradeship. Food was well prepared -- Dining Room staff is scarce. Took nearly 1 1/2hrs to have 80+ y.o wait for their full lunch. Have entertainment/patio BBQs/ "gardening" using an elevated window box - holiday parties(those are actually impressive and memorable to spend with your loved one) Won't say I wouldn't recommend, but like ANY Nursing Home, yes it's a Nursing Home, you have to do your homework and be ahead in the know at all times with what occurs.
