I was visiting my family in Portugal, near the Spanish border, and decided to check out Salamanca with my cousin and no plan. Unfortunately, this was in January where the temperature was below freezing so I did not have an opportunity to experience nightlife with the university in session.
Hostal Gabriel y Galan was, without a doubt, the best lodging situation I had (outside of family) during my time in Iberia. I think the owner was a bit confused when a guy who spoke Portuguese (my cousin) and one who spoke Mexican Spanish walked in the door, but he caught on quickly.
The owner and his son were incredibly hospitable and friendly. The lodging was far above average and the advice on where to go was on point. Bonus points for allowing us a way in to the hostel after they went to bed and warning us that we could not drink in the streets like in Portugal.
If I could give 10 stars, I would. Without a doubt one of the highlights of my time in Salamanca. read more
