The grounds of the hotel are simply gorgeous. Do what you can to get a view of the old mill and the waterfall from your room - it's worth it! All of my little complaint below are because those were the minor downsides to the experience of staying in such a beautiful hotel. It's still fully deserve the four stars, and is by far the most beautiful hotel we saw while traveling through the surrounding countryside. You have to rent (or bring, I suppose, if you are lucky enough to be in a position to do so) a car to stay here, but the location ends up being a perfect central point between the various destinations you are likely to want to visit while staying in the Perigord Noir region. Make sure to notice that the sign on the main road does not actually say "Manoir d'Hautegente," but if you're looking down a clay road framed on either side by trees and then fields of French wheat beyond, you're at the right place. The staff was incredibly friendly and spoke very good English despite their protests to the contrary, and they were very complimentary of our efforts to speak French. The food in the restaurant on the main floor is expertly and exquisitely prepared, but it is not for the faint of heart. The first night's menu included salmon gravlax, veal with sweetbreads, and a rhubarb based dessert. The chef is undeniably talented, and the ambience and service are supreme, but unless you are very committed to the gastronomique experience, the affiliate restaurant down the road (Table de Jean) may be a better choice. The included continental breakfast is actually quite nice, with fresh baked bread and fresh made jams that are out of this world. My only complaints would be that I was not a big fan of their teas nor did I enjoy the boil your own egg experience after the novelty wore off. If you ask for an aperitif before dinner, they give you a delicious little selection of amuse bouches that are both beautifully plated and perfectly paired. If the weather is right, eat and drink outside so that you can hear the water and see the beautiful surroundings. If indoors are better accommodations due to the day, check out the little study with the beautiful fireplace and lovely leaded glass windows. One of my biggest complaints was that the advertised wifi was not really available. I was only able to connect for about an hour for the entire three night visit, and in order to do so, I had to perch on the edge of a trunk in the staircase at around eleven at night. When trying to get directions and plan trips and tours, this was a bit of a hassle. I think a small financial investment in some wireless signal boosters would go a long way. My stay was part of a trip I took my mother on for a big birthday she had, so we reserved a room with two twin beds. The beds were comfortable and the room was spacious and very traditionally decorated, which was very much what we were looking for. We were a little apprehensive when we first started the stay, as we found several uninvited guests staying with us in the way of a half dozen spiders clinging to the edges of the room. The radiator was also a bit tricky to figure out, but after we settled in, it was a great room. The bathroom was also nice and spacious, with a separate tub and shower (with the highest pressure shower nozzles I have ever experienced). All in all, the little things lost the hotel a single star, but it was still one of the prettiest hotels I have ever visited and was a major feature in the trip of a lifetime.

The original cave was opened to visitors when its content became public. A cave? With the most beautifully executed paintings from the paleolithic, 16000 years old to you and me. Paintings? nearly 2000, most of them animals, with mainly horses, stags, but also bison and cattle. The paintings are stunning, some of the best in Europe. The walls and ceilings are covered with them. Why a reproduction? because of the damage done to the murals by a fungus that thrives on the carbon visitors exhale. I have visited Lascaux 2 several times and I can assure you that it is very well done, the dimensions of the caves are the same as the original and the paintings are exact replicas. I never had at any time the feeling that this was a fake. The caves are in a wood in the countryside near Montignac. There is ample parking, and the site is accessible to pushchairs and wheelchairs, albeit a little inclined. Tickets are not directly for sale on site, you have to buy them from the tourist office in Montignac. To get a better idea, you can visit the website and get a glimpse of what lies in the caves.

The positives were an extensive wine list and a smashing special entree, the Swordfish Trifecta. The trifecta consisted of tartar, smoked, and sashimi; a delicate and wonderful dish. The restaurant specialty is duck and I went with the waiters strong suggestion to order it. The duck was presently beautifully but was tough as a construction boot and had zero flavor. I ordered the duck medium rare as suggested, and it was cooked perfectly. The meat and the texture was honestly the worse duck I have ever had; it was simply not edible. I spoke with the waiter about it very discreetly and he seemed perplexed and somewhat hesitant to speak with the chef. I asked for the chef to come speak with me if he wouldn't, so he left the dish and retreated. He came back about 10 minutes later and said "sorry"; my response was "what did the chef say" and his response "sorry". He then walked away. He never offered to replace the duck or another dish. I sat there for 20 minutes and never touched the dish. When he returned he said "sorry, we would like to offer you dessert". I was beside myself at this juncture and frankly had lost my appetite. I declined the dessert offer. Our bill came to 102 Euros for my wife and I with one entree, two plats, one dessert (my wife), and a bottle of wine. There was no adjustment made to my bill for duck and I paid the full price plus left a nice tip for the waiter. My belief was it was not his fault and the chef was probably a monster to work for. Neither the chef, maitre d said a word to us as we left. The following day I sent the maitre d a note expressing my strong dissatisfaction with my dinner, the experience, and their overall lack of pride in their food. The maitre d responded with an angry and scathing note accusing me of lying and not knowing great food if I saw it. He went on to berate me and spew ugliness. My strong, strong recommendation is to avoid this restaurant at all costs. Maybe it was an off night for the chef, but there is no excuse for the maitre d's lack of professionalism and ugliness.
