I truly can't say enough good about this Barcelona gem. From the moment we walked in we were greeted with friendly staff. Don't speak English? No problem! They have someone there that can easily speak whatever your native tongue. Our room was absolutely perfect and full of amenities to make your stay comfortable with a touch of posh. Daily we took advantage of the electric kettle for tea & coffee and fell in love with the towel warmer. The bathtub was generously sized and the perfect end to a day of roaming the Gothic Quarter. Their turn down service was a nice touch, served with super yummy chocolates. And can we talk about that bed? I'm tempted to book another trip to Barcelona just to be able to sleep in that comfy bed again! The hotel itself is gorgeous. They offer 'Tea Time' every day with yummy goodies and once checked-in I even received an email inviting me on a free walking tour with a complimentary drink. The rooftop bar and pool were quite lovely, offering an incredible view of the city including Sagrada Familia. I would book here again in a heartbeat. The location was perfect. We were walking distance to almost everything including being able to get away from the touristy part of La Rambla. It's great and all, but it's also great to be that close to the amazing neighborhoods. Pro-tip: Get up early and catch the sunrise from the rooftop. It's incredible. read more

Hotels location and staff is great. Really close to everything in walking distance. Some tips - the hotel doesn't have irons - as an American we hoped to press our clothes. You can do so at a 6 euro per article fee. They also don't exchange money ..... So you should come with euros in hand La Isabela roof top bar is quite lovely. What a beautiful hotel! We went with this hotel because of the location, and it looked beautiful on-line. Service was wonderful, from check-in to bar service, to housekeeping. Love it when housekeeping greets you and they are happy! The room was gorgeous and huge by European standards. Double sinks in the bathroom and separate shower and bath. Comfy king bed. Extra plus, Carre Four is a half block away- so convenient for water, snacks, wine. Would definitely stay here again! read more

I had this place bookmarked on yelp. I wasn't sure why and walked in. The lobby was gorgeous and looked around and then headed out. Figured that was all there was. So glad I read yelpers review while enjoying the lobby, and was reminded that they have a roof top bar. Wow... what a view. not very many people so it was quiet, low profile jazz in the background and service was excellent and I cant wait to go back. Totally enjoyed my stay here for a week over Christmas. I'd never been to Barcelona before - so, took a lot of time to make up my mind - but, couldn't be happier with the choice! Here's what I liked to help you decide if it's for you: - Fantastic, friendly service - Great room with a lovely view (I was at the back) - with all the amenities you expect - including great service - from a five star hotel. - Location, Location, Location - La Ramblas is right outside your door - and it is the ideal location for getting practically everywhere in Barcelona by foot in this so walkable town. But once you're in it - it's very quiet. - Free, working wi-fi - A haven when you grow tired of walking: Grab your swimsuit, robe and slippers and head to the gym and in-door pool or the even better it's rooftop terrace with it's heated pool, bar and magnificent sunset views of the city. Bottom Line: Don't think you can do better than this in Barcelona. Highly recommended, and will stay there when I visit again. read more

There are SO many hotels in Barcelona that it's honestly overwhelming trying to pick one. I ended up booking this one solely because of the indoor pool/spa. The hotel is in a great location as far as tourist sites are concerned. Most of what we needed was within walking distance. The indoor pool was really nice, thankfully, since it was the reason I decided to splurge. I couldn't quite figure out if the water was too cold or too warm. It was somewhere in the middle which I did find a bit odd. Sadly, several of the jacuzzi jets and one waterfall were not working. We went to their breakfast buffet twice while staying there. It was INCREDIBLY expensive for a breakfast, in my opinion. However, the food was good. I was a bit miffed because I ordered a bottle of water to drink with breakfast. I finished about half of it and started to leave with the rest. The hostess said I couldn't bring it out with me. I could understand if people tried to game the system and order a bottle right before they leave, but it was obvious I was not, so it seemed silly for them to pour out perfectly good water. Great hotel in a prime location, a ten minute walk to everything. Hotel staff was friendly and fluent in several languages. We accidentally left a piece of high value jewelry on the nightstand and left for the day. Upon our return, our room had been cleaned and the item was exactly where we left it. We are definitely coming back to this hotel. On a side note there was a large protest in the streets of La Rambla against tourism in Barcelona. Despite the angry residents the businesses were very welcoming and friendly. We did see a lot of extremely intoxicated, obnoxious young men from the U.K. Stumbling around town. I'm sure we were no different in our youth, but I could sympathize with the residents of Barcelona. read more

To add to my previous review of this hotel... ...hotels of this price range generally have exceptional guest services. This also includes service after the guest has left. I forgot my cell phone charger there and asked them if they could send it to me. They didn't. I've stayed at a B&B before where I forgot something and even they were willing to send it to me. When I pay over €160 a night, I expect that the hotel takes over this type of service at their expense. I have never heard of a hotel that doesn't do that. A disappointment! read more

Very nice hotel and rooms but the staff was horrible. Our travel agent booked the room at a discounted rate since he sent all his cruise passengers there. We arrived, checked in, and at were told at check out the rate was not correct - even though we had the official reservation in our hands showing the rate, our names, the date, etc. They accused us of forging the rate even though they had it in their system and we had the email confirmation from the hotel! We have traveled to 67 countries and this was the worst hotel experience we ever had. Needless to say, this hotel will not be getting future cruise passengers from this travel agency. read more

We stayed at 1898 as part of our honeymoon. We actually stayed at the La Meridien across the street for a night earlier in the trip (both were part of a Costco Travel package) so I can compare the two. (To compare with the La Meridien, I think 1898 was slightly cheaper but fancier overall. Breakfast is comparable but this one is a little more luxurious. 1898 has more personality.) The theme of the hotel carries throughout and is very precisely done. The rooms are gorgeous and regal; I loved the teabox of stationary and the closet design. And they offer a .5L bottle of water in the room which was great for the summer. We had breakfast included, as we did in most of our hotels in Spain. THE BEST. The hotel is situated on a higher floor so you can look over Las Ramblas as you eat. Aside from a great buffet with everything from eggs to jamon to pastries to cheeses, you could also get cooked-to-order egg dishes. The rooftop bar is really cool and offers a great view of Barcelona. The hotel staff is very kind, and though it's on Las Ramblas, it's not loud in the rooms. Without question, when I return to Barcelona, I'll want to stay here again. read more

Me and my best friend were in Barcelona for a week, and our final evening we really wanted to have a drink on a rooftop somewhere. We were looking for a rooftop in the centre, near Ramblas. Hotel 1898 is perfect: a hotel with a cool rooftop with an amazing view over Barcelona. Although my friend and I were the youngest there, we had a great night and met some great people. Loved the atmosphere. It is nice to dress up for this, because all the hotel guests are kind of 'chique'. For my friend and I, this was nice to do on our final evening in Barcelona, but it surely cost us a lot haha! Definitely a recommendation for a romantic last night. read more

Awesome hotel. Recommended this is by our travel agent. The location is perfect, just off La Rambla and a block from the market. Lots to do in the immediate area and easy access to transportation. The rooms are average size, but modern bathroom and very clean. The rooftop pool is awesome, nearly as much as the basement pool, which is a converted coal storage. The front desk people were very friendly and happy to give us dining/shopping suggestions and a few really useful tips. The rooftop transforms to a great hangout bar are in the evening. It overlooks the city and ended up being the "starter" bar each evening. We will visit Barcelona again, and bring the rest of the family next time. After having a terrible experience at a hotel on our first night in Barcelona, Hotel 1898 was a refreshing fix. We called them around 9am asking if they had any availability... Not only did they have availability, but they allowed us to check in early (around 11am) and they upgraded us! Monika, at the front desk, is wonderful. She's friendly, speaks wonderful English, is extremely helpful about the area, and even gave us a few restaurant and coffee suggestions that were her personal favorite of the area. Everyone that we have interacted with at the hotel has been helpful and friendly. The rooms are great. Spacious yet cozy, filled with all the expected amenities: a large, & comfy bed, desk, a couple of chairs, a closet, mini bar, coffee maker (the suites have Nespresso machines), thick & quiet windows with both sheer and blackout curtains, large bathtubs, Etro toiletries, a hairdryer, towel warmer, and free wifi. The location is wonderful, right on La Rambla which is very central to most everything in the city and also close to a couple of subway stops. We ordered room service breakfast one morning and the food was delivered right on time, delicious, and a very generous portion. The neighborhood is lively but the hotel is quiet and comfortable. We would definitely stay here again and are already recommending it to our friends who we know will be traveling to Barcelona soon. read more

This review is based on my few hours night cap with a few great friends! After dinner we decided to all meet for a "quick" night cap at the rooftop bar on 1898. We heard the views were spectacular and the bar was exceptional. If you don't know how to use your navigation and it's nighttime, you might miss the hotel. The sign isn't very eye friendly, it's quite small- easily missed! The rooftop bar is situated on the 7th floor. It's actually a very cool bar. The rooftop decor is set up like a lounge with plenty of comfortable couches and chairs all around the rooftop. Each sections has views of the city. However, I was a bit disappointed. Because Barcelona has so many buildings of the same size or slightly higher than 1898, you don't quite get the view of the city like you would in a high rise. You end up seeing many other rooftops or taller buildings...like the W Hotel. But, it's still a nice rooftop bar, regardless! The drink menu was interesting. Looks like Gin&Tonic is pretty popular in Barcelona. Although I'm not a fan of G&T, I heard it's pretty good. I had a margarita. It was awesome! Lots of salt, the way I like it! Apparently the mojitos are amazing! I had a zip or two. If you're into sweet cocktails...this ones for you! Overall this is a neat place to meet friends for drinks! The service was excellent. The seats/ couches are so comfortable, you can actually fall asleep...if you get in too many good drinks! LOL! If you're in town, stop by and have a drink! read more

It's a good hotel for location - not because there is any reason to visit Las Ramblas (the Times Square of Barcelona) but because many good sites and neighborhoods are in walking distance. I also really enjoyed the rooftop lounge and pool, albeit the pool is fairly small. The food at the hotel is extremely pricey but pretty good. Room service brought a bounty. It was my boyfriend's birthday and they brought a complimentary bottle of cava. Staff was pretty great and the room was comfortable. We hated the shower especially the water pressure but this was also true of all the hotels in Spain. Also typical of other hotels in Spain, the bed was extremely hard. read more

The best hotel you can stay at. The location is excellent. The rooms are great; they're dark and the ac is extra cold. Rooms get cleaned several times a day. Staff knew us by name. Location is awesome. Walking distance to everything. This is your place. Just one warning, we ordered desserts at their restaurants; the chocolate mousse had black pepper in it and carrot cake was mashed carrots. So stay away from their desserts. read more

Stayed at this hotel while in Barcelona and overall it was a great experience. The hotel is located off La Rambla, the busy famous street in Barcelona with lots of shops and eateries. It's two blocks from la bouqeria, the amazing market that one must visit when in Barcelona. It's also a few blocks from the gothic quarter so in terms of location it's pretty ideal. While we were there, they were doing a New York themed week so they had a magnolia bakery in the lobby, which was a nice bonus. The staff is friendly and helpful when it came to asking about recommendations and directions. The rooms are also nice however the only thing I'd mention is the room smelled like cigarette smoke even though we requested to be in a non-smoking room. This however improved after our first night there. It may also just be an issue at several hotels as cigarette smoke might get in through the vents even if the room is non-smoking. read more

Gorgeous classy hotel. Love the decor and the fact that there's a very specific inviting aroma when you first walk into the lobby. The rooms are very clean and cozy, complimentary robes and slippers and plenty of different language channels on tv. Best part of the hotel is its location, off the busy street of Las Ramblas but centrally located to everything. Taxi stand right in front. Rooftop pool and bar is amazing, comfy couches and gorgeous views. Indoor pool is very relaxing, dim lit with candles and also offers a sauna and steam room. Staff is very helpful and friendly. As I'm writing this review and enjoying a coffee by the lobby the server just placed a small dish with two cookies for me without asking. Overall, great hotel and definitely recommend it. read more

My only issue was this place was very pricy. The room was large with a good modern bathroom. The breakfast was very good with lots of options. The hotel has it all- location, service, and amenities. Located in the heart of La Rambla, you can wade through the tourists to get a taxi, metro, or easily walk to the surrounding neighborhoods in the heart of the city. The concierge was super helpful at making our reservations, and called a doctor when the excitement (and food) of Barcelona caught up with me. We were immediately impressed upon entering the hotel. The front desk staff was polite and professional and spoke English very well (we could have gotten by with limited Spanish, but...) and that was helpful. We had an interior room that overlooked a red courtyard, it was quiet and peaceful. The room was small but we did not mind a bit. It had everything we needed. The bed and pillows were comfortable and everything was clean and well kept. The bar downstairs is really nice but if you go to the rooftop there is another bar and a wraparound deck overlooking the city. It was fabulous up there day or night! There are tables and lounge areas with big pillows and umbrellas. They have a swimming pool on the roof as well as one in the basement spa that is amazing. We felt the location was perfect as well.
