Intro: The day before visiting the Pompei ruins, I was looking for a spot for dinner. Stuzzico di…read moreLucias is the most popular restaurant in terms of reviews on Yelp in Pompei, and it has received a lot of accolades on TripAdvisor, so I made my way over on a Friday evening. Service (3/5): Your typical European experience. Not terribly efficient, friendly, or attentive, but it's a pretty small restaurant so that made things easier. Also a bit of a language barrier with the waitress but we made it work. Ambiance (4/5): Indoor only here which is a bit unusual for Italy where al fresco dining rules. Lovely restaurant though with a homey, comfortable feel. The only downside is that there's no A/C so it was a bit stuffy. Drinks (4/5): I had a Peroni beer (not their standard but one I hadn't had before). It was refreshing. Food (4/5): They start you off with some complimentary bruschetta which is a nice touch. From there, I had the meat platter which came with a generous amount of sliced pork, salad, and bread. I ate half and took the rest to go which they boxed up for me nicely (including utensils which was a nice touch too). The meat was cooked just right at a medium and was flavorful. Overall: If you're looking for a great meal in Pompei, definitely stop by Stuzzico di Lucas. It's located a stone's throw away from one of the entrances to the Pompei Ruins. And also happens to be in the heart of Pompei close to a lot of other restaurants, bars, and shops.

We also had the pasta with mushrooms, a bit too much oil on the dish but it tasted great. As soon as we sat down the chef sent us Bruschetta and came out to ask us how we liked it. The Tiramisu is really amazing. You could taste the bottom layer was moist the mascarpone sweet and a perfect cappuccino. Very affordable. Atmosphere: Cozy room, right across from one of the Pompei ruins entrances. Italian music playing in the background. It was a Monday at about 7, there were only two other groups there so not too busy. Service: Amazing, the head chef was not too busy so he was checking on us a couple of times. He was really proud of the food they make. Tips: definitely get the Tiramisu.

In this fashion, we were lured into this establishment by the owner while walking through the silent street on a gloomy afternoon. The open, airy space is pleasant and unpretentious. The welcome by waiters was more comparable to a greeting that a host would provide for guests into their own house. Being presented with a wide spanning menu felt completely unnecessary, as within moments of sitting down, the chef came out of the kitchen to greet and tell about the house specialties. The middle aged Italian man was dressed very cleanly and despite little knowledge of English, provided a better recommendation than one could ever desire from yelp or from the menu itself, which still laid untouched on the table. The prosciutto bruschetta was bursting with flavor of fresh, ripe tomatoes that gave off the sweetness of a cherry, the fullness of sun ripening and the flavor that can only be experienced in a dream. The paccheri pasta looked as beautiful as it tasted, in a pleasant green color and the flavor profile that one can only experience in select establishments. Amusingly from the name, the Carlo Alberto pizza was the least favorite of the dishes had here, but was very interesting. If coming through to visit Pompeii, do not miss this establishment.

The host of the apartment I was staying at in Pompei recommended Mercato Pompeiano and provided me with a 10% off coupon. That's all the motivation I needed! Ambiance (4/5): Like most restaurants in Italy, you can sit inside but your better option is to sit outside on the patio for some al fresco dining. Which is what I did. There are a good number of tables outside and it's a lively street so I enjoyed the atmosphere. Service (1.5/5): Your standard European service. My appetizer came out before my cocktail arrived. I had to track down my waitress twice. Not the most efficient but a bit friendlier than your typical service in Italy. We'll get back to the service in a bit. Drinks (4/5): I had a special spritz that had red wine in it. I appreciated the creativity. Not cheap but a solid drink. Food (3.5/5): I started off with the authentic version of fried mozzarella which was drizzled with a cream sauce. A bit different than mozzarella sticks in the States, both in terms of size and taste, but just as delicious. From there, for my main dish, I tried fried pizza for the first time which is a popular dish in the Naples region. My fried pizza had different types of pork incorporated into it and it was huge! I ate half. Not as good as regular pizza in my book but I was glad that I crossed it off of the bucket list. Overall: Now here's where things fell apart. When I paid at the cashier inside, I noticed that they overcharged me one Euro. My cocktail was priced one Euro higher on the receipt than the price that was listed on the menu. The cashier took a look at the menu and then apologized. I don't know if this was an honest mistake (perhaps they upped their prices and forgot to update the menu) or if it was intentional (most people won't notice a one Euro price difference on a cocktail) but it's the principle of the matter. The apology was nice but I feel like they should have gone further. Maybe comp the cocktail entirely. Or offer me a free shot of limoncello or a dessert. Something to attempt to get it right. They did not.

If you did not look at your bill and start to wonder why it's so high, it is this hidden fee. You might wonder if this fee help at for anything free - absolutely not. You do not get anything free. You need to pay for water. There's no free bread or anything. When you ask them, they say it was on the menu and they don't show you where it is. Since they left a menu at the door, I then looked and it was in the second page in SMALL light orange letter on a GLOSSY white menu. You can barely read it but if you place around with the lighting ant holding the menu in different angles then you will see it. I read such awesome review by others so I want to try it. Don't believe the review about the pizza. You are simple paying for an overly expensive, glorified bread that barely has topics and cheese. See my pictures. The pizza is small and cost 30-50% more than other places. In some cases, I don't even know if you can call it a pizza. I should have know when it's prime dinner time and there's only one other table. I think the people who wrote the review stayed at the hotel that it's connected to and was too lazy to find found elsewhere. So they order a pizza and took it to their room.

This place is a little bit pricey, but also I feel as though it was worth it for our first time Europe travel. It's right outside of Pompeii at the exit , so knowing it was in a toy area we knew that we might be paying a little bit more for the food. But the service made up for everything, it seems as though it's very team service and a lot of the workers were helping us not just Salvatore. Overall, we had a really great experience and would be back.

We tried many things, all were good. The most exceptional were the beef tartare, fried cod with cauliflower and the spaghetti with seafood. We also tried pork belly, fried seafood with salad, tuna tartare with mozzarella, mixed salad, and pasta with tomatoes and mussels from mt Vesuvius. We had an early lunch so we were literally the only ones in the restaurant on a random weekday at 1pm. We ate on the beautiful outdoor patio area that was essentially enclosed in a tent, perfect for the slight chill in the air today. The locals would probably call this place expensive but for a group of 4, we spent about 120 euros including a few glasses of wine. They also have a nice 4-course tasting menu for 35 euros, 50 if you add wine to each course. For us, for the quality of the food with all local ingredients, it was certainly well worth it. Overall, a nice slow-paced restaurant to rest our feet while sipping on some local wines and tasting some good food after a long morning's walk in Pompeii.
