Stayed here while at orientation. Loved the vintage feel and look. The front desk worker was very nice. Decent amount of to go breakfast offerings. The only thing that wasn't great was the water pressure, including the toilet flush. It struggled to get even a single tissue piece down. read more

Hotel is beautiful and historic. Staff is nice and helpful. Bathrooms are small, but nice! Electric outlets are not conveniently placed, so I would consider bringing an extension cord, but other than that, our stay was wonderful! One of the coziest hotels ever. Will definitely return just for a nap in that bed again. Great location, in the heart of downtown, and a very short drive to MSU. We didn't care for the super delayed "free" breakfast though...burnt bacon, burnt hash browns, and a blah, non-crispy "crispy" waffle. Oh, and three other tables received their food before us, even though we arrived before all of them. The fruit, coffee and juice were good, most available while we waited. I'm sure we will return, and may even try some evening appetizers and hope to check out the beer garden in the back. read more

I had a last minute trip to visit my younger brother at MSU, and this hotel was packed and I couldn't afford the more expensive room but they gave it to me anyways after explaining my situation promising that I'd eat dinner there too. The owners were thee most humble and hospitable people I've met. Later on, I headed down to dinner and the atmosphere was the definition of southern comfort. I ate in the beer garden, I ordered a medium rare steak that was cooked to perfection with a burger the spicy remoulade sauce that was so different, yet so familiar and loving. The shrimp in basket was also a nice southern touch. I'm surprised this isn't rated 5/5, but I guess there always be that one or few guys who always have something to complain about. This place truly felt like I was being treated by my grandparents when I was kid, home. read more

And by the looks of the steak the grill hasn't been cleaned in a little bit. If my company's travel department hadn't booked this room for me I would leave. Standing in the lobby, my friend was talking about the call girls coming to my room later. The pretty young girl behind the tiny front desk didn't even bat an eye as she responded "I'll make sure the room next to you is empty so you don't disturb anyone." That was my first minute in the Historic Hotel Chester. The people there were friendly and fun. When I checked out a couple days later, the same girl was working (she must put in some long hours). She asked if my co-worker was ok this morning because he wasn't telling any jokes and she missed it. She was cool. The rooms were a little small with a small area for working. But they had some character. And for $10 more I could have had a larger room with a larger work area and bathroom. I will definitely do it next time. The rooms also include a cook to order breakfast in the morning served in a beautiful room off the lobby. They have two restaurants in the building as well as a bar. Didn't try them. On my next trip to Starkville, I'm staying here again. Oh, and for the record there were no and have never been any call girls ;-) read more

Had a great two day stay at the Hotel Chester. We arrived after midnight and the front desk staff member was great. He met us at the door let us and helped get us situated. The other staff members are just as nice. Rooms were clean with lots of space for a historic hotel. Will definitely stay here on our next trip to Starkville. read more

Update of prior review...thought it needed to be mentioned that it was damn near a year between my visits (Aug 2011 and June 2012) and the owner remembered me and asked after my family...If they remember things like that then you can pretty much figure they are gonna look out for the small stuff to make sure your stay is pleasant!!! I have pretty much stayed in every hotel in Starkville and so far, this is my favorite. The owner was so nice, they have made to order breakfast included, and the Beer Garden is a perfect hangout for craft beers etc. The location is perfect for walking around downtown, shopping and dining. There was plenty of free parking in back too. The room was small but clean and very much all that I needed. The bed was very comfortable actually. The front desk staff were all very polite and friendly too. It is an older hotel but it has so much character and the rooms seems quite updated, large TVs and Free WiFi too. I don't know why I waited so long to try this place out, but it is now my preferred location to stay in Starkville. read more

Gordon Ramsey should come back. The breakfast staff is rude and the other staff didn't care when reported. The coffee was bad, the milk was sour, and the liquor tasted watered-down. I stayed here for just one night with my boyfriend. The hotel is in a good location. We did not like the room we were given (it was a terrace room) as it overlooked a roof and HVAC unit. The front desk happily switched us with no problems. We stayed in a king room. It was okay. The bed was very comfy. They definitely need new carpeting in the rooms though! When we went down for breakfast the next day, we sat down and looked at the menu. We both decided on eggs benedict. The waitress was SO RUDE. I could not believe it. She approached us with "What do you want?" When we ordered the eggs benedict she interrupted us and said "You know that will take 12 minutes to cook right?" like we were a burden on her day. Then when I asked if we could have water she answered with "Water? What, TWO waters?" Literally everything that came out of this woman's mouth was just mean. We ate fast and got out of there as we felt so uncomfortable. read more

Great hotel spot! Located in a historical district, and has a bit of touch by Gordon Ramsey! Yes, he decorated the beer garden! It was the best quiet hotel I have ever been in....in my life. I don't know if they were sound proof rooms or not....but we didn't hear a peep. We slept like a baby. Our room was pretty small...It was a Queen room. But it was okay for 2 people. The bathroom was probably built for 1 person. Because you can't close the door if you're on the toilet. It gives you a bed and breakfast vibe. The breakfast was the best. It was hot and fresh. It was to die for...Get the French toast! The chef comes off as a little mean, but she is the only one cooking the food....but she is really a nice person. So smile, and say something nice to her. Other than that... enjoy your stay, and hopefully the beer garden will be open....as of now it's being renovated. Oh another thing....they don't clean your rooms until you leave.....and they only give you a few towels when asked! I still gave 5 stars for the friendly staff, pleasant atmosphere, and historical architecture! read more

Last night I was supervising for An event at Hotel Chester and this was BY FAR the worst experience with a business I've ever had for any event. To start off, the owner refused to provide cups of water for people while serving alcohol. The bartenders were kind enough to give our girls cups of ice regardless of age but there were other workers taking up these cups and accusing people of underage drinking simply for having ice in a cup. As the night went on Davis went to close his tab and they had LOST HIS CREDIT CARD and accused us of losing it. Come to find out, they gave it to a different person! We will NEVER be giving this place business again and I suggest you do the same. read more

The breakfast is cooked to order (offering eggs, with fruit, with juice, with cereal, with hashed browns or grits, with toast). The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about local events and history. The Beer Garden is delightful. I really loved this hotel. Friendly staff, comfortable bed, clean rooms, convenient location. Delicious breakfast included in what was already a reasonable price. Loved the history and the atmosphere. Had fun exploring and figuring out where the different hallways and doors would take you (one door opens up directly across from a 2nd story Tiki bar). Pleasant, kind of generic pottery barn type decorations in the room, but the building itself is full of character and I like pottery barn anyway. We did have a small bathroom, at least for our room, just a FYI if a big bathroom is something you are looking for in accommodations, when booking I think they have other options. Beer garden was closed, I am not sure if due to stormy weather or still closed for renovations. read more

This is our second stay at the Hotel Chester. We are sold. You can't beat this historic hotel for its charm and ambiance -- the added bonus is that it's located in downtown Starkville and close to MSU. The beer garden is a favorite and has been recently renovated with more seating. While our room this stay is on the small side, our earlier room/suite was delightful. Frankly, we were lucky to get a room here again for the MSU - Alabama game! A must stay and look forward to many more stays! read more

The historic Hotel Chester in downtown Starkville, Mississippi, is THE place to rest your head if you're not into the 'typical' hotel. It's privately owned, and there's a chance you'll have a chance to meet the owners during your stay. They are happy to suggest shops and restaurants, they also have a restaurant in the hotel called The Beer Garden. The rooms have been updated and have a homey feel to them. The staff are very helpful and quick to respond to requests. I'd recommend The Hotel Chester to anyone who's coming into town for the whole weekend or just a one night stay. read more

The location is great, the college kids working the place are awesome, but the management doesn't come through on his end. Busiest weekend of the football season (Bulldog Bash) and out of many things and totally understaffed. Main stage is right out the front door and plenty of seats in the establishment, yet out of many beers, and after ordering they come back and realize they are also out of the wine we ordered. read more

This is the most beautiful, charming, and cozy hotel I've stayed in while traveling in Mississippi. The pictures don't do it justice, and the service is OUTSTANDING. If given the choice, I don't know why anyone would stay in the Hilton "Garden" Inn when they can have all the authentic charm of historic downtown Starkville at The Chester. I checked in for one night - last night - and stayed in the Standard Queen room. After having walked down the hallway, complete with arches and 1920's style chandeliers, I was struck by the elegance of the room. Struck! All the features of the building's original design were still in place. Another thing I noticed - most hotels have streaks going down the hallway from people dragging their bags along the wall, but these hallways were spotless. Not a streak anywhere. No stains on the floor or in any fabric, including the bedspread. It's clear the owners invest a lot of work, money, and love in this place. I'll definitely be back! And hopefully snag a dinner at the now famous Beer Garden! read more

My husband and I, as well as lots of other friends, recently stayed at Hotel Chester for a wedding and the customer service was AWFUL. The check in staff was unwelcoming and borderline rude. In the dining room area, the woman who serves you breakfast was SO RUDE to us BOTH mornings. She has an attitude, very unfriendly and made us feel uncomfortable. It is an older hotel so I didn't expect the rooms to be big but prepare yourself for literally a bedroom. Walls are also thin and you can hear the neighboring guests. read more

My stay at Hotel Chester was amazing. The staff was welcoming and made me feel like family. I love the all the character and charm that this historic hotel presents. We were upgraded to a better room, free of charge, and the staff was always available for any questions we had. We even had a chance to chat with the owner of the hotel, who was both friendly and accommodating. The hotel is in a great location with shops and restaurants within walking distance. If I ever find myself back in Starkville, I will stay at Historic Hotel Chester without a doubt. read more
