The infrastructure is definitely of a 4 star hotel - especially good and really also state of the art and very spacious is the fitness area. That's probably also one if the reasons why the Swiss national football team (Nati) is also staying in this hotel when they have a match in Italy. The infrastructure of the rest of the hotel is from the 80/90ies but the prices definitely from a todays 4 star hotel. In oder words - a quite good hotel but way too expensive for the outdated infrastructure.

She allowed us to be picked up at the Melide train station outside of the normal shuttle hours which was helpful. We were greeted nicely and had our bags taken care of and we were allowed to use the facilities because our room wasn't ready yet which was nice. The lake is lovely and you can swim in it. There are also boats for rentals, I just wish they had kayaks. Our first room was initially very low and only gave a view of the parking lot but one quick call to the front desk fixed this easily and we were moved with no trouble. The room itself was fancy and felt very royal. I had two amazing nights of sleep here as the bed was so comfortable. We also received very soft robes. The spa was great as well, I just wish some lights were working in the hammam and that the hot tub was hotter. We opted for massages and these were wonderful - there was also fruit infused water available at the spa and throughout the hotel which was refreshing. The breakfast buffet was also delicious and offered a variety of options + champagne. We did not dine at the restaurant, however as the hotel is located about 10-20 minutes walking from Morcote so we ate there most nights. It was easy to access with bus and the hotel shuttle. Overall, the hotel is a little older and not as modern as some hotels but it still felt classy and was a great stay. I am giving this 5 stars due to the service of the front desk, but I do think a couple of items could have been fixed (making sure all the lights work in the spa, the ladders to the lake were a little dingy and some screws could have been tightened). Overall, I still recommend this place to anyone going to Morcote!

This led us to the Hotel Villa and Palazzo Aminta. What a fortuitous chain of events!! This property is in the most beautiful location. Great views of the Lake and the Islands! Terrific, luxurious guest rooms. And the most genuinely friendly and accommodating staff I have ever experienced. I bet I have stayed in nearly a thousand hotels in my life and I cannot think of a better one. If you get anywhere even close to northern Italy, you must stay here.

The only thing that perhaps let the hotel down was the buffet breakfast, it was included in the room rate though so I won't complain too much. My specific room had a nice balcony, updated bathroom, but older furniture and beds. The room was a decent size, although the refrigerator under the desk made it impossible to sit at the desk and fit your legs underneath. My room also had a great air conditioner, which I understand is not standard in all rooms. The staff are incredibly helpful and friendly, happy to give advice or information on things to do in the area. Closet space in room 442 is quite good with plenty of hangers. The shutters on the windows do a pretty good job of making the room dark at all hours, important for those of us with jetlag. There's also a US outlet in the room for those who are short an electrical adapter. Some areas for improvement are the hotel beds and especially the pillows. Beds are just okay, not particularly comfortable. But the pillows are hard as stone. The placement of the shower head (in a corner of two walls) makes it quite hard to actually be under the water, so you are required to take the handle off the holder. The motion-sensor light in the hallway was a bit annoying, as every time I moved while sitting near the desk, the light would go on. Wish there was a way to turn it off.

Their is a restaurant located in the hotel and a bar/lobby area, which is decorated in an old style that reminds me of my great grandmothers house. The restaurant serves OK food, but nothing to write home about. There is a breakfast buffet served in the morning that was the typical standard Swiss breakfast selection. The perfect setting to our romantic weekend getaway. My husband and I spent a wonderful weekend in Lugano a couple of weeks ago at the Continental Parkhotel. We decided on going down there last minute (literally one day before) during the popular tourist season so did not have too many nice hotels to choose from as most of them are booked out. My main criteria was that the hotel has a nice swimming pool, air conditioning in all the rooms and free wifi. As luck would have it, this hotel fits the bill and there was ONE room left. We were very excited and booked it straight away. At checked in, our reserved standard room type was not available. The reception agent promptly upgraded us to a superior room in the main building with a huge terrace and a beautiful view (at no extra charge). You always expect the photos on the web to look better than the real thing but this hotel looked even better in person. Built 120 years ago, the hotel is both old fashioned and updated. There's been many renovations done over the years but a lot of the original details were carefully preserved throughout the property to reflect it's former splendor. There's a palm tree garden with little stone path that leads up to a charming Grotto with long tables and benches where the hotel host BBQ's during the summer weekends. Since the property sits on the hill, the swimming pool, sun deck, and even a vineyard are all set on different levels in perfectly complimentary layouts. The hotel offers a feast-like buffet breakfast (included in the room rate). The wait staff brings you individual pots of coffee with heated frothy milk on the side. The croissants are freshly made and smells wonderful. The best part is the sunny bright dining room with a view of the mountains. The hotel is very family friendly. It seems like people go there generation after generation. The guests and wait staff greet each other like old friends....something you don't see in big major worldwide hotel chains. The concierge was friendly and helpful. They provided a lot of assistance to us over the weekend from restaurant recommendations, the best way to get from here to there, making a late night reservation at their restaurant after closing time, to supplying insect bite lotion and insect repellent spray late at night when I had no way of obtaining them from anywhere else. There's a big first aid box behind the front desk with just about everything you might need and not able to get when you need them. I was so grateful for the Fenipic gel which spared me a lot of grief after getting a string of mosquito bites on my leg walking back up from the lake late in the evening. Everything about our experience at this hotel was pleasant and positive. I would definitely stay there if I'm ever in Lugano again. Maybe even with my family from the US next time.

Both in May and later in June I was with Trafalgar Tours (two separate tours). So altogether I stayed 4 nights at the Hotel Splendid in Baveno, Italy in 2013. I'm glad that I did, it's one of my favorite hotels in Europe. Plus, I took photos.
