5 stars. Boutique hotel in downtown Fargo - each room is designed a local artist. The rooms are spacious and much larger than you would see at a standard chain hotel. The staff is friendly. Breakfast can be ordered and is delivered to the room. The only downside is that a couple of the rooms get a lot of street noise but that can happen anywhere. Highly recommended - the best place to stay in Fargo. I travel for work and stay here always - 15 mins to the local Microsoft campus. read more

We stayed here during our one night in Fargo. We would definitely recommend this lovely boutique hotel in downtown Fargo! They upgraded us to suite 17, which had a jacuzzi in the middle of the room, which we didn't use , but still a nice touch. The rooms are all different and all very modern. Room was very spacious. They had complimentary wine, beer, and snacks at 5pm. They also bring a complimentary breakfast to your room in the morning. This consisted of pastries and Danish. You could have ordered more, but we didn't. They even boxed it up so we could take it with us. They do have a very nice restaurant and lounge which is where we had planned to eat, however there was an extreme heat wave in Fargo while we were there and their kitchen had to close down because of that. Also, our room was a bit humid. All in all I would recommend this place if ever in Fargo! read more

Did enjoyed our stay at this classic hotel. The bed was comfortable and the pillows were good . Very clean hotel. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The only draw back was that it was not a quiet location. It is on the street of a college party town. They did provide ear plugs. read more

This hotel is one of the best I've ever stayed in (and I travel a lot!). The staff was phenomenal, and went above and beyond to ensure my stay was perfect. The rooms were beyond what I expected, bed was so comfortable I could have spent all day there. Everyone I met I had to tell how great HoDo was! If you visit Fargo you MUST stay here. Three stars because the atmosphere was good. Great place for a date or to get drunk and people watch. Downside your across from the women's health center. And I am subjected to watching idiots light candles etc and protest. If they had real jobs it wouldn't be a problem. However the food was lame it didn't entice me. I would have given it 5 stars but there were a few hiccups quickly resolved. Very nice boutique hotel in the heart of the downtown area which was convenient to walk the streets with the many bars and restaurants. Nice rooftop bar. We ate once at the restaurant and the Bison burger was the best we have had! Service was good too. I rooms are artsy and trendy. The little amenities were wonderful. Coffee & continental breakfast, 5 pm wine & cheese. 8 pm turn down with chocolate truffles. HIghly recommend. read more

Bartender told us the rooftop was open, but after riding the creepy no light elevator to the roof we were rudely turned away as on certain days it is only for "hotel guests". Didn't even have the opportunity to try anything before the incredibly rude service staff turned us away. Will take our money elsewhere. read more

As soon as you find out you're visiting a new city, the first thing to do is consult Yelp, as to where to stay. The picture doesn't do it justice. It's in the heart of downtown, and you can walk to many places which is what we did the first day. The pros far exceed any inconveniences. Since it's an artsy atmosphere at every turn, does it have to include the damn toilet. The ultra low stylish squatters. Since you are already using state of the art fixtures from Koelher's use their toilets also. I had a room with a tub/shower. I had to lay a towel in the tub, because I almost killed myself slipping. They do have shower only rooms so this might be something to consider when booking. The tub drain is on the slow side. You're gonna love the TV, unfortunately no DVD player. They have a Bose CD player in the room, so this isn't unreasonable and they get constant requests for it. I was constantly tossing and turning all night on the marshmellow soft mattress. In spite of this, it's still the best place I ever stayed in. And if I won the lottery I'd pull a howard hughes and live in it. I loved this room right off the elevator, plenty of cool lighting, and the urban art decorating the walls. The staff are all very young, yet so helpful, without the stiffness. We did the valet parking for the extra $15. a night. We get back at 11:00 one night, and we had no problem with someone coming down and parking it for the night. In the room is an unbelievable mini bar, with gourmet snacks offered. It's the kind of hotel you want to hang out in which is just what I did on the first day. The extra touches are too numerous to mention. The only room service I ordered was a glass of lemonade, because it's one of the best I ever had. read more

Best night sleep in over a month of traveling. The bed was a fluffy cloud. The bathroom had a rainfall shower like I wish I had. Checkout is a lenient noon. Service is excellent--I left two bags a few days in advance. When I checked in, the bags were waiting in my room. In my adult traveling life, I've stayed at hotels in over 40 cities in the US, Canada and Europe, and I'd have to say that my stay at the Hotel Donaldson in Fargo North Dakota was one of the best, if not THE best, hotel experience of my life. I've stayed at hotels both larger and smaller, fancier and less fancy - but nothing rivals the sheer character and heart of the Donaldson. Where to start? First, THE STAFF. They were very nice, accommodating, friendly -- clearly they love their jobs. I had to check my bags before and after my stay, and I even requested some ice in the late evening and someone ran down to the basement to get it for me. The bar staff in the HoDo were great too - in fact this one young woman behind the bar recommended I check out the Hjemkomst Center while i was in town, and I did, and I was so grateful for the recommendation. THE ROOMS - each one is different, decorated by a different artist, and just exploding with character. Very tasteful, very pleasant. I had Room #1, which was about 475 square feet, and included a full couch and two lounge chairs in the "living room" area. THE RAINFALL SHOWER HEAD in the bathroom was amazing. I loved THE ART on the walls, and the lighting - a lot of lightswitches in that room, i wish I counted, but there 7 to 10 maybe? But I liked having different lighting options, like choosing to illuminate the art but not the whole room. The view out my window was of Broadway and it was so cute out there, with the January snow and the lights in the trees. You can't beat THE LOCATION - in the heart of downtown, walking distance from dozens of bars/restaurants, the legendary Fargo Theater, and the Plains Museum. I also walked to the Hjekomst Center in Moorhead, it was really only five or six blocks away across the river (about half a mile). THE GUESTS - I met some very nice, interesting, fun people at both the wine/cheese hour (four 50-something women, a book club - they were a hoot!) and during my final hour at the hotel (a local couple doing a staycation) where I sat in the second floor lobby while waiting to depart for the airport, recharging my phone. In fact, I met several *local* people who were staying at the hotel, as an in-town staycation -- how's THAT for a good sign at the awesomeness of a hotel? THE PRICE - maybe it's expensive for Fargo (?) but I cannot imagine staying anywhere else, and a hotel of this quality would cost double what I paid (or more, for sure) in a larger city. If I had any criticism, I could nit pick and say the carpet was aging in a few spots and the toilet wasn't as nice as the other fixtures in the bathroom, and I was sad the rooftop hottub was closed. But overall, I enjoyed my stay in Fargo immensely and a huge part of that was due to the Hotel Donaldson. (I was there as part of my 50 states bucket list, not for business or family.) If I ever return to Fargo, I would stay at the Donaldson again in a heart beat. I feel like a hotel with 17 unique rooms incentivizes you to come back right? Absolutely LOVED the place. read more

The room was beautiful and the staff friendly. However, we informed the staff ahead if time we were celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary. The other guests were very warm and friendly, hoping we had a wonderful celebration, but not so much as a note or extra truffle from the hotel. The hot tub on the rooftop was also being worked on - we could use it, but it didn't get very warm, and that feature was the main reason we chose this hotel for our celebration. read more

The rooms are modern and cool as each room features artwork from a different artist. Every evening there is a wine and cheese spread for the guests to enjoy. This place is amazing. Everything you can think of, they do very well. The soft bed, the unique art, the bose radio, heated bathroom floor, Aveda soap, etc. Breakfast is done by room service. It's right downtown so you can go elsewhere, but I did the room service breakfast and it's excellent. The rooms don't all have tubs, but I got one that does and it's a very deep, luxurious tub. They all have rainfall showerheads. I didn't have time to try the gym, but I did go up to the rooftop to look out and that's pretty fun. I heard a fire truck go by. The fire station is a block away. It wasn't a big problem for us, but maybe some people would want a quiter place. read more

We've stayed at HoDo about 6x in the past 10 years. We love the unique rooms and service. However we noticed stained carpet and other issues at check-in. For a hotel of this caliber, I'd expect a better appearance at the desk. It's not the first impression I'd expect. Dinner reservations were also screwed up and restaurant service was not up to par. Each room is so unique, designed by a local artist they each have a theme. The customer service was excellent. The room remarkably comfortable. It is pricey for what you get. But the experience downtown is (almost) worth the price tag. For a fun, romantic night out the experience is unlike most others. This is a fun place with real character. There are two significant problems that detract from a four or five star rating. One side (East I think) of the hotel is blessed with the sounds of tipping garbage containers very early in the morning a couple of times a week. The staff, well, they have a lot on their minds and sometimes get distracted. The service bar is not as high as in a large city hotel. I had to call four times to get a receipt sent to me. read more

During an unexpected and short stay in Fargo due to a flight diversion, I found Hotel Donaldson for the night. It was a pleasant surprise after a long, stressful day. My room was cozy, spacious and modern. Loved the little touches - delicious house made truffles bedside for turndown and Aveda bathroom products. The staff were very friendly and even accommodated a call in restaurant order before I arrived so I could get food before the restaurant closed. The steak was delicious! If I'm ever in Fargo again, I'll surely stay at HoDo. read more

The hotel and staff are great! But could use probably more staff. Drive up to valet, no one there! So I went to the front desk and they took my keys to park my car. It worked but confusing. Mini bar is well stocked good wines and bubbly. Ordered a meat and cheese tray it was great! They offer a turn down service which I loved, the truffles they left were to die for. We ordered our breakfast to be delivered the next morning, came in a timely fashion, my girls dishes were yummy, my pancakes not so much! (Don't order them) also the essentials were missing salt,sugar, cream, jelly, etc. too hungry to call to have them come back up. Oh and the muffins and scones, not so good, definitely not fresh ones! read more

The receptionist knew what was going on around town that weekend, and had a brochure ready to put in my hands. Professional, friendly, incredible service: I showed up before check-in because I happened to be across the street, so they peaked on the room to so if it was ready for me and it was clean and tidy. The hot tub was supposed to close at midnight but my wedding let out at midnight, so they made special accommodations. I forgot my tux coat in the room; they promptly contacted me the next day. read more

Smack in the center of an interesting and lively part of town, only 11 minutes from Fargo's Hector airport, this place is a gem. A building preserved from its century-plus roots, this comfortable yet hip establishment surprised me. I arrived quite late after a seriously delayed flight but despite the post-midnight hour I was welcomed warmly -good thing since it was -20°F outside. She gave me an overview of the property, took care of getting my car parked and pointed me toward my room. My corner room was fresh, warm, large, open and comfortable. There was enough drawer space, counter space and desk space to be very easily functional. Windows let in light from two sides and the blinds shut it out when desired. Desk chair, couch and bed were all supportive but not hard. My room was appointed with many examples of the work of a local artist who works in blown glass. (I was reminded of Murano), his pieces adorning many of the functional surfaces as well as some purpose-built shelves on the exposed brick wall and in niches - all with specific lighting directed at the pieces. I learned from a booklet of literature in my room that each room is appointed with works of a different local artist - painters, sculptors, etc. The walls effectively block sound transmission so using the Bose Wave sound system causes no worry. The wall-mounted TV swings for good viewing anywhere you can sit or lie except at the desk (you can still see it but at an oblique angle) There's a rain shower and hand-held shower head in the bath, (whose floor is heated) nice bath linens and interesting fixtures. The refrigerator and safe are hidden behind cabinet doors, adding to the clean open feel of the place. I had room service breakfast which arrived on time, with a smile. I'll definitely stay here next time I'm in Fargo. Highly recommended. read more

This was a stay that just kept getting worse. Our room smelled like natural gas so we asked about it and they said it's a known issue, it's not natural gas but the smell is from the restaurant below. We asked to switch rooms so they gave us the only other available room. While we're moving our things (weren't gone for more than 1 min) my husband went back to grab the truffles from the turndown service and the concierge says "oops, I ate them" and promises to get us a replacement. In the meantime I'm noticing our new room smells strongly of cigarette smoke. They said that this, too is a known issue, that the apartment next door smokes heavily and it comes through the walls. We decide we'll deal with it but this turns out to be a bad decision. There was heavy secondhand smoke the whole night and I slept 3 hours before taking refuge in the lobby the rest of the morning due to congestion and a sore throat. My husband faired a little better but woke up with a killer headache. To top it off we never saw those truffles..... read more

We had an unbelievable experience at this hotel. They have a lovely wine and cheese reception in he evening, a turndown service with delicious artisan truffles, and a complimentary breakfast basket of artisan pastries and coffee or tea they deliver to your room at a time you choose each morning. Lots of additional goodies in the room or that you can have waiting for your arrival for an additional fee. Very warm and personalized service. Very modern hotel in a historic space. And the vibe is really cool. Each room is unique, designed by a different artist. We had Room 17, designed by a local potter who studied in Japan, which featured an in-room Japanese infinity spa tub that fills from the ceiling, which was just incredible. We did not eat dinner in the hotel, opting instead for a casual meal at the taco joint right across the street, but both the lounge and restaurant looked good and both were packed! It's located in a cool downtown area, with lots of shops and coffee places and restaurants all totally walkable, including a 1920s art nouveau movie theatre just a few blocks up. We only wished we were staying longer. read more
