And this is exactly why I love Melbourne! There I was, stumbling down Smith Street on my way to Stomping Ground Brewing when I noticed the most adorable little umbrellas lining the street, bright lights beckoning me inside and the sound of joyous Mexican music calling my name. IT WAS A MEXICAN MIRAGE. Hotel Jesus is brought to you by the same people that gave us the deliciousness that is Mamasita. It is a huge venue, occupying the old Collingwood post office. The fitout is adorable. Little metal tables, photos of noble-looking Mexicans adorning the walls and half the space occupied by the bar and kitchen. You can see EVERYTHING as it happens. The menu includes images of all the food and drinks, so if you are desperate for a cocktail with an umbrella in it (as I often am) you can easily pick the one you want. For food, we ordered: + Guacamole + Prawn tostadas + A chicken 'foldie' (a quesadilla) + Fish tacos They all have much fancier names on the menu, but you get the jist. The foldie was a standout, as were the tacos. Honestly, the only thing I could fault would be that not enough chips were brought out with the guacamole, however we just asked for more and they kindly brought us some. The drinks were a real standout though. All cocktails are poured from tap, which is both impressive and efficient. We had: + Margarita + Their version of an espresso martini (which is pink and comes with an umbrella!) + A smoked diablo I started with a margarita, which I simply insist you do too and the espresso is adorable but very milky. Perhaps have that one as a nightcap. The smoked diablo was OUT OF THIS WORLD GOOD. Not dissimilar to a Bloody Mary, it had a powerful, meaty flavour to it. Hotel Jesus is going to get very busy very fast. It truly is a fun and affordable dining experience. Get your butt there now!

I love Mamasita so when I heard that the team behind this fine dining Mexican joint would be opening a new venue I was overjoyed. Hotel Jesus is in the old post office building on Smith street. They have transformed the venue into a over the top American diner-esq restaurant with neon signs and lots of attention to detail. It looks really interesting. The menu is laminated and has pictures of everything which is super daggy but fits the theme. Corn on the cob, tacos and other small bites are all available and taste amazing. One thing to be aware of, while they have branded the venue as "casual dining" you will still be paying restaurant dining prices. For two people having a casual snack with some cocktails (2 cocktails, 1 taco each and one guacamole & dessert to share) came to around $80. This was a snack and in no way filled us up. It was all delicious and a good time but if you are looking for lunch or dinner you might want to look else where unless your after a pricey night out. I suggest coming for cocktails and a bar snack.

Juanita's does a taco night on the first Friday of every month. We decided to check it out tonight…read more... and we weren't disappointed! The shop itself is very unassuming - a diamond in the rough. Juanita (or who I assume is Juanita? Should have asked! ... ) was very friendly. She made us feel very welcome and ensured we had everything we needed. We tried the taco mix, pork and chicken tacos. The tortillas were rustic. They come with an array of sides (& plenty of them!) including a pineapple/cucumber salsa, a cabbage slaw, some diced onions, coriander, tomatillo with avocado and chipotle sauce. There was also a couple of Juanita's home made sauces on the table to use. We enjoyed it all! Although quite full we couldn't resist trying the salted caramel Cheezecake. It was really delicious, thick and rich but well balanced with the addition of yoghurt, honey, bitter chocolate and praline served with it. This is a vegan option FYI! BTW - Juanita's sells delicious sauces and spices to take away ... we just had to grab one. We'll definitely head back.

The chicken mole was the best I've had in Oz, as were the corn tortillas - the latter had real flavor and must have been prepared by someone who has eaten real ones for many years in Mexico. Don't be put off by the street scene outside. The place itself was cozy and service friendly.

The seasoning is bold, and the meat portions are generous when done right A. * Freshness: Fans highlight the freshness of ingredients -- from guacamole to grilled chicken -- and the made-to-order feel of the food B. * Atmosphere: Some stores offer a vibrant vibe with Latin music and Spanish-speaking staff, giving it an authentic taquería feel A. * Customer service: Friendly staff and quick service are often praised, especially during store openings or promotional events C. Where It Falls Short * Inconsistency: Reviews show that quality can vary between locations. Some customers report dry nachos, missing ingredients, or poorly assembled tacos C. * Service hiccups: A few diners have had negative experiences with drive-thru communication or staff attitude, particularl Guzman y Gomez is a flavorful, fast option for Mexican food lovers who want something more vibrant than typical fast food. When the kitchen's on point, it delivers big on taste and freshness. Just be mindful that your experience may depend on the specific store and time of day. We have eaten at Guzman y Gomez in at least six cities and they are all very good. Am sad that we were so hungry that we forgot to take a picture. But it was a simple meal of three Hard Shell Minced Spicy Beef tacos. There were very good. Not the best in the world but better than Taco Bell. The place was packed. And it took longer than average. Think they forgot to call our number. Had to go ask if our food ready. It was! Will definitely return on our next trip to Australia. Recommend for a quick inexpensive lunch.

There are a lot of gluten-free choices and I went for the Mex Bim-Bap (baby spinach, quinoa, shaved cabbage, shredded raw zucchini, guacamole, charred sweet corn, pickled cabbage, pico de gallo, black beans, crispy paprika chickpeas, tortilla strips, lemon vinaigrette) and Chargrilled Corn for a starter (back in the states we call it 'street corn'). Both were really tasty and while you can add chicken, fish, beef, pork or falafel to the Bim-Bap, it was enough for me as is. They have alcoholic drinks (I had a bourbon, neat) and the atmosphere is fun and lively. You place your order at the counter after you've been seated and they bring the food and drinks over to you.

This particular outlet is massive, with mountains of seating to look after the lunch time crowds. Get here bang on noon if you want a table right away, otherwise you risk having to line up and wait a little while (though the speed of everything probably means you won't wait long). You can also pre-book for groups of 12 which is great if you want to come during the lunchtime rush with a big group of colleagues. Weekends are a bit dead. I went for a Sunday dinner and our group of 10 had no problem getting seating at 6pm. The selection of drinks is small but the house-made Agua Frescas and the cocktails using local spirits are fun and inventive. The Horchata is delicious and worth a try if you've not had it before. If you're a mad Mexican fan then the food at Fonda will let you down. There's not a lot of punchy flavours and some dishes fall short (the beef taco wasn't that great - the topping bitter) while others are surprisingly tasty though far from authentic (fish taco I'm looking at you). The chicken quesadilla is just plain boring if you ask me, but it great for kids or plain eaters. My advice? Choose wisely and go with the approach of sharing a number of dishes for a bigger variety of flavours.
