We occupied three rooms, and as a Marriott Platinum member who has stayed at Marriott properties around the world, I feel comfortable saying that this hotel stands out for both its quality and its service.
The staff was terrific from beginning to end. Everyone was warm, professional, and genuinely helpful. A special shout out to Mikul, whose name I may be spelling incorrectly, because I really felt that he was looking out for me and my family throughout our stay. That kind of personal attention made a real difference.
The hotel itself is stylish and modern, but still has traditional European touches that give it character. Even the scent in the hotel stood out to us, in a very good way. It seemed like a branded fragrance and added to the overall atmosphere. I was upgraded to a very large room with a sitting area and spacious bathroom that was perfect for my wife and me. The other two rooms were smaller, but still very comfortable and generously sized, with good bathrooms. The towels were large, high quality, and branded with the Hotel Ercilla logo, and bathrobes were provided as well.
Breakfast was one of the highlights of the stay. We had the option of eating in the formal dining room or using the buffet. The dining room was upscale and modern, with excellent service and an à la carte menu. The buffet was also very good, with a wide variety of choices, including made to order omelets, and the staff there was exceptional. We ended up choosing the buffet three of our four mornings. The rooftop was another highlight. We had drinks there one evening and enjoyed beautiful views over Bilbao, along with the same strong service we experienced throughout the hotel.
The location could not have been better for us. We walked to the Guggenheim, restaurants, shopping, and many of the city's main attractions. When we wanted to go farther, the subway was literally about two minutes away. There is also plenty to do right around the hotel, including the nearby Azkuna Zentroa cultural center, which is well worth visiting.
This hotel simply does things right. After we returned home, every member of our family said they would gladly stay at the Ercilla again because of the staff, service, design, location, food, and overall experience. The hotel genuinely enhanced our vacation and left us with an excellent impression of both Marriott and the city of Bilbao.
