Schweitzerhof is located right next to the train station in Engelberg, which makes it a very convenient destination for tourists. Across the street from it there are couple of bars and restaurants, as well as a Mammut sports and rental centre. The rooms are spacious, clean and very nice. The bathroom was also big and quite modern. The staff at the reception was polite and helpful: in the last day they let us use their lobby for many hours (we were a large group, so we were literally taking up all the space in their lobby) and even served us some fruits. Very important to mention is that the food we had at their restaurant was great: not only very tasty, but also attractively arranged on the plate. And they have a separate Cheese room, where they only serve fondue and raclette in a traditional atmosphere. You cannot leave Engelberg without having the traditional fondue pot and that's one of the nicest and well priced places to have it! For the hotel however, be prepared to empty your pockets, as you can easily spend around 200 chf/night. But it's worth pampering / being pampered every once in a while, isn't it? :)

The buffet breakfast at the pavilion was above average, with a nice selection of local meats, cheeses, fresh juices, homemade breads and even sparkling wine. I can't speak to other meals at the hotel since we dined out for other meals and only spent two days there. Our primary complaint was that the room wasn't available for the early checkin, despite pre-requesting same through virtuoso. When we planned our trip we were unaware that we would be visiting during carnal all, and nothing could have prepared us for the craziness! It was like Mardi Gras on speed, with insane costumes and people of all ages singing, dancing, playing music, eating and drinking in the streets. There as even a party on Saturday night in the lobby, lobby bar, and ballroom of the hotel that went until 4 am. What a blast!!

It was surprisingly quiet for the bell parades that were going on for 3 days and nights. The staff knew your name and what room you stayed in even if you have never seen them before. Also they let me check in early the day after christmas so major points to the cleaning crew for coming in early to make the room. Everything was perfect until I re-read my bill the night after checking out. The bed had broke in the middle of the night on the 27th and I didnt notice of course until I woke up. I immedietly let the staff know and they promply fixed it while I was out. When I checked out the man at the front desk was professional but not very friendly with me. I dont know if it was because I was an American, younger, a woman or a foreigner that he was so nice to the German gentleman in front of me but had a less friendlier attitude when I talked to him. I am now back a day later to talk about the 50% bed repair for 100 chf I have on my bill. I asked to speak to someone about the charge and was handed the concierge phone at the front desk. It is Simon the owner/manager that checked me out. I ask why I have to pay for a bed I did not break, he says the break is not common and that the cost is 200chf and he graciously already paid for half. I told him how it happened in the middle of the night and that I should not have to pay for bed maintenence. I was acused this time that I must have 'jumped on the bed, or 'made aggressive movements' or had 'rough lovemaking' in the bed because it broke near the head and it shouldnt do that. He also stated that roughly 6,000 people come through the hotel per year and that the beds are fine for them. Again I explain that all I did was sleep or sit on the bed and if I had broken it myself I would have said so and paid the repair bill in full but since that is not the case I would like that portion refunded. He did offer to give me a copy of the invoice so that my insurance can reimburse me which is proper and I am glad that he is kind to offer. However he still insisted that it was my fault and it was generous that he has already paid half of the repair bill. Since I have no way to prove that the bed was previously broken, well used or faulty it seems that I am the unlucky fool that has to pay for it. I left that hotel in near tears feeling like I was branded a lier and unreasonable. The entire conversation I was calm and polite but in the end I felt like he did not care. For a Michelin hotel to treat their customers like that is unthinkable. Everything was perfect until that point.

The check in and check out procedure is so personal. They sit you down and treat you as one on one. Unlike anything I have ever experienced. Upon checkout, they give you a small parting gift too. The dinner was fantastic albeit small portions but 8 courses! The cheese bar is out of this world with 20-30 different cheeses. You can also get cheese to go if you want. As much as you want. They have a neat little cigar bar with Cubans of course. The breakfast buffet in the morning was fantastic with plenty to eat. Oddly, we never got to the spa or pools but we did check them out. The town of Lenk is very small but oh so beautiful! Very fortunate the weather was clear and warm compared to the rest of my rainy and grey trip. It is a journey to get to the resort. I was coming from Salzburg which was about an 8hr journey. If you're coming from Zurich it's about 2.5 hrs and if you're coming from Bern it's about 1.5hrs, all by train. Long story short, since I was coming from Salzburg the journey took longer than expected and we didn't check in till about 21.30. We were so tired and hungry when checking in they could sense how exhausted we looked and they called the restaurant to see if they would stay open for us and they said yes! We immediately went to eat and the servers never rushed us and they treated us so well. I was very grateful they stayed open late for us. Tips/Comments: The website, at least for me, was very difficult to get information on what was included in my booking. Friends were the ones who told me about this place and I just mimicked the same packaged they got. So when we arrived I felt like such a cheapo asking if this and that was included b/c i just didn't know. So with the gourmet package dinner AND breakfast is included. Couldn't find a place on site to eat lunch except for in the Sauna they have this vegan broth that provided some substance. Also the contents in your mini fridge are included as well (thank god!). It was the first and only part of our trip where we had free water. Speaking of which, note that most of Europe's drinking water comes from Switzerland so drinking the water from tap is completely ok, even at the airport. When you're at the fancy dinner you can ask for free tap water as well. You also get a city card that lasts the duration of your stay. Highly recommend taking the lifts up to the top (about a 20minute ride) and the views are worth it. If you ever wonder why the town seems empty or quite it's because everyone is on that mountain hiking down. And let's not forget the sulphur pools and sauna. The pool is wonderful and just note that the Sauna's are nude. I get nude is totally an ok thing for Europeans but I'm sorry, my American-ness just couldn't strip down. They do provide a thin towel that I wore to cover up while i was in the sauna, just don't expect anyone else to do the same. Also, don't talk in the saunas. You will get scolded. Last but not least, if you decide to go into town and eat food off site its is VERY expensive. My lunch of a soup, salad, and coke was 38 swiss franks. 0_0

The staff are amazing, the rooms are gorgeous, the views are spectacular, the service is top-notch, and the dining is delicious. I got a corner room on the top floor with two balconies and a window that overlooked further up the mountain. I had the delight on seeing some cows out there on my first morning. I utilized the pool everyday, got a massage at the spa on my second day, and ate at the restaurant onsite everyday for breakfast and dinner. I recommend all of it! It can get chilly out on the terrace, even in summer, so they have thick fur coats at your disposal for when you want to sit outside. There is a smoking/cigar room inside and ability to smoke outside on the terrace. The staff will also bring anything to you anywhere onsite if you just call and ask. They have elevated plastic ware available for poolside dining. Overall, highly recommend!!

The rooms were well appointed but I wish they had been a little more cozy and a little less corporate. At breakfast the first morning, my friend and I both ordered the overnight oats. When the dish came we both assumed it was an amuse bouche because the portion size was hilariously small. Like shot glass size. I still giggle when I think about it. It turns out that all the breakfast portions are small because you can order an unlimited amount of dishes and they don't like food waste. While I can certainly appreciate that, it would have been nice if our server had explained that when we placed our order. We were better prepared the next morning. The food overall in Switzerland was just not my favorite. It was good but under seasoned for my taste. My favorite dishes at dinner were probably the carrot coconut soup and the summer salad. The large pool at Villa Honegg is certainly the star of the show. It's heated and open until 11pm and we spent as much time there as we could. The one downside about this hotel is that it is a 20-30 minute drive into down for any activities or reservations at other hotels. It is worth it for the view but know that you need to make plans well in advance for offsite activities.
