Came across this place while walking downtown. Only hotel that I could find in the area. On a whim, booked it direct on their site. Room rate was reasonable. Old, fancy, historical building. Fridge and safe, no microwave. Bed was comfy. Slept great. TV slides out from under the footboard of the bed. Never seen that before. Shower was also something I have not encountered before. Unfortunately, this hotel was a disappointment. We stayed for 4 nights and 5 days. Although we were disappointed, the staff was friendly. Our room was only made up one night of the four. The second night we called down and advised our room wasn't made up and we needed towels, and tissues. We asked for two sets of each- bath & hand towels, and wash cloths. They brought 2 bath towels and nothing more. We had to go down to the front desk and request. This happened the last 2 nights as well. In addition to the lack of towels, our trash was overflowing. There was a wedding on the Saturday night we stayed. It was very loud. There were also highly intoxicated guests roaming throughout the hotel. The lobby smelled of alcohol, and the guests on the second floor were yelling obscenities as children ran around screaming freely. There didn't seem to be any hotel staff trying to manage this situation. The room wasn't in the greatest condition. One of the curtain hold backs was falling off. One of our pillows was stained yellow- not sure if it was urine or not. There were cables coming out from under the bed that we tripped over repeatedly. The last morning we were locked out of the room. We had to go down to the front desk 3 times to reprogram the key. After the 4th attempt they finally sent someone up. Overall it was disappointing because it had a higher rate than other hotels in the area. We chose it for its reputation, but it didn't meet the expectations we had. Our third and last stay. Such a shame to see such a gem in decline. Asked for a quiet room and booked into a wonderful suite. Fair price with good accommodations. BUT... House keeping seems to be a suggestion. Hallway smells very musty. We're not messy occupants so it was disappointing that the bed linens weren't replaced or even made nor were the bathroom sinks wiped out. Ya seems minor but when the job is only fresh towels there's not much work. Staff on autopilot. Then dinner at in house restaurant Table One. Reservation at 630. Arrive at 625 not seated until 645. Not busy. One booth and private room occupied. One waiter and one bartender. Bartender fully occupied making 5 drinks but finally seated us. Booth dirty bread crumbs all over cushions. Waiter took our entire order by 715. Bartender iunaware of drink order ignoring entire room.. waiter under water scrambling...desk clerk appears not very busy. Restaurant under staffed. Got tired of endless waiting...left went elsewhere. All the signs of staff reduction..cutting corners...saving pennies. Im sure this facility was originally a huge investment and a corporate star now...not so much. Best of luck Wyndham but you screwed the pooch. We won't be back. read more

The staff was kind and helpful. The hotel in general has great potential and the ambiance was elegant but: A microwave & clock in the room would be helpful, the room safe was broken when we checked in, no condiments for the coffee maker and for a "pet room", why would we be placed on a high floor and tucked all the way in the back of the hotel making "doggie trips outside " stressful. The $100 pet fee was expected but $100 was excessive given there were no amenities provided with no rationale to attribute for the charge. As for room storage; small drawers with exceptionally low capacity for our things. As for front desk, we called several times inside and outside and the phones were never answered. We were prompted to leave a message. That was discouraging and we thought about looking elsewhere. Lastly, staff (housekeeping and the bar/room service) made up for the shortcomings, the bar tender/ room service person was AMAZING and he understood how to keep the guests feeling special by providing Excellent conversation & service! Thank you!! Size wise, the rooms were way too small and adding to the issues such as what's listed above will eventually diminish the hotel's relevancy if unchecked. Three stars which was supported by good customer service by the Waite & housekeeping staff. Peace read more

Gorgeous, classy, clean! When you walk in, you definitely feel like you forgot to pack your ballgown! It's just so pretty! The front desk associate was so professional and just so nice!! She actually loved her job and you could tell! I love great customer service! The room was so beautiful and I truly wish I would've booked for longer than one night, as that comfy bed was calling my name! Absolutely Lovely!! 101yr old property still beautiful and accommodating. Entire property is just gorgeous! 2019 renovation might as well have been done last month! Everything looks exquisite! Staff at check in was so friendly and welcoming, seemed genuinely interested and gave us some history of the building. I just can't say enough! We were just passing through and looking for a place for the night and came across this stunning hotel. I wish we had more time! I absolutely LOVE the history of the place and the way it's shared with their patrons from the lobby to an "Our Story" card in each room. Lots of interesting stories and places to discover in this downtown area, just wish I had more time! I truly hope that I am able to return again soon! read more

The room was spacious and comfortable and one of the more accommodating handicapped rooms we have experienced. (I could write a book on ADA rooms in hotels). Glamourous, unique boutique feel with outstanding service. When you walk into the lobby of the Hotel Retlaw you feel transported to the Roaring 20's. Your inner Great Gatsby is immediately channeled, and you feel compelled to grab a fancy martini from the bar on the first floor or start snapping photos of the flashy interior for the gram (seriously!) Parking is complimentary for guests on the 4th floor of an adjacent parking garage/lot. There is signage outside the elevator stating one person or one family/group traveling together is allowed in the elevator at one time. We appreciated that especially because the elevators were small. The check-in process was seamless. There is even a place for you to deposit your "used" pen after signing any documents for incidentals, bills, etc. The front desk/guest services person was impressive; well-informed and charming. He was a young guy and refreshingly pleasant, helpful and polite. It made for an inviting and elevated start to our stay. The gym was open, but you had to schedule an appointment to utilize the facilities. The lounge bar was easy to access with ample seating pods throughout the first floor. Masks are required inside the building/in public spaces outside of your room. The hotel located right in the heart of the downtown area of the town including about a 1-mile walk from Lakeside Park and an easy block or two walk to bars and restaurants. The room was very clean with a stocked coffee bar. There was also a mini fridge for use and the ice machine down the hall was available. We loved the wireless charging pad, rain shower, TV that raised up out of the bedframe and the old-school alarm clock. The room was on the tiny side and we did hear guests clearly from the hallway when we were inside our room. We were also directly across from a bar which had live band performing on the patio. The music stopped at 10pm and we had no other issues with noise thereafter. The overall experience was an A with exceptional hospitality and an unbeatable location! read more

We stayed here for two nights this weekend and were thoroughly unimpressed. The room was tiny. The bathroom had unlocking cafe doors that couldn't be opened at the same time as the closet. The bed was uncomfortable with the strangest pillows we've ever experienced. HUGE ... and suddenly cement hard bricks. There was no room service. My husband and I stayed here for a wedding nearby last week. The hotel is completely gorgeous. The detail in everything from the flooring to the chairs and couches in the lobby is almost breathtaking. Many reviews say they feel a 1920 vibe, and they are completely accurate. I have stopped by with my sisters before for a cocktail in the lounge. They make an amazing Smoked Manhattan. We had a group of 5 people for our first beverage last weekend and the food and beverage manager quickly pulled another chair over to a table for us. The bartender did a lovely job entertaining us while making our Manhattans, which is also a huge part of the charm. Anyone can pour a drink, but not everyone can make a drink pour special. The rooms are a bit smaller than someone who travels a lot would expect, but you must take into consideration this is a historic building. If you stay in Downtown Chicago, the rooms are even smaller. Even though the rooms are cozy, they are updated and modern. At one point I remember thinking I would not be brave enough to decorate with red draperies, but it really added to the glamour. My only complaint about the entire stay would be the air conditioner was very loud. As it was 90 degrees, I took the loudness over the sweltering heat. We had breakfast in the restaurant downstairs. Everyone enjoyed the food, service was prompt and polite. Check out was a breeze, and they emailed a receipt for any additional charges so I did not have to wait. Even if you are not staying the night in Fond du Lac, I would recommend you pop in to check out the hotel. On a side note, there is a review that says there is not anywhere to eat nearby. I feel it is sad the person did not truly explore the downtown area. There is great pizza at Joe's Fox Hut, and amazing Old Fashions at the Brickhouse. The Brickhouse even has old video game units upstairs to play (think Miss PackMan). If you don't know where to go, just ask a local, they love sharing their favorite places. read more

Definitely worth a stay. Glamourous appointments throughout the property. The front office staff are always professional and very friendly. The Front of House staff at the bar and in the restaurant are always fun and the bar is always worth a stop. Great Speakeasy-Era mixology going on. The entire experience falls apart, however inside the actual restaurant. The Food & Beverage Manager is either in over their head or just simply checked out. The food is beyond deplorable and sad. Undercooked fish, overcooked beef, bland soup. Breakfast - while complimentary, isn't worth the paper it is printed on. They cannot even warm a croissant without turning it into a crumbling hockey puck. It is a shame because FREE help has been offered by a Cordon-Bleu trained chef and nothing but crickets from Mr. Pike. Same with the General Manager. No response. In short, stay, drink, don't eat! read more

Unlike Sally Ann, I enjoyed my stay at the Retlaw. Ninety-nine percent of the staff were outstanding and upon arrival the rooms lovely and clean. Yes, the rooms are small but it was a renovation/restoration of a classic hotel. If you travel a great deal and stay at this type of hotel the rooms are generally small. This being said, I couldn't give it a four star rating for the following reasons. 1. Sally Ann is correct about the bathroom doors but my main complaint is the 1 to 1-1/2 inch gap between the two doors. When the bathroom doors are closed, one can still see inside. Although this shouldn't be a big deal, the view is of the toilet. If someone is using it, you can see them sitting there. 2. My second complaint is the shower floor. It has been tiled with a shiny tile which is slippery when wet. Although a bath mat has been supplied, it is a bit small and if your not careful, you can fall. There are no handrails in shower to grab in this case. Hand bars could have been installed without taking away the design of the shower. I realize as I state this that the shower is on the smaller side which really doesn't bother me as my home shower isn't that large either. My last irritant is lack of housekeeping service. We left our room for 3-4 hours and came back to an uncleaned room. When calling down to the front desk, I as informed "that it wasn't her fault and I shouldn't give her attitude". She couldn't help if housekeeping didn't clean it. Needless to say, it really didn't give me goose bumps of happiness. I will say, that I gave this establishment a 4 star rating is because of all the other staff members, cleanliness of the hotel, and convenience to downtown Fond du Lac. I wouldn't hesitate to stay again. read more

This is a beautiful old hotel that i stayed in with my parents while visiting for my Grandpa's funeral. I was disappointed the room didn't seem to have enough outlets for powering phones and such things. The first room we were in had several issues with the air conditioner not working, and after we switched to another room during a street concert right outside our window, the AC worked almost too well and it was kept cold no matter how low it was set to. I enjoyed the fact that the hotel was so old, it used to be the Ramada, and still had the roof-sign from that, but the other signs had been changed, so it must have been a rather recent takeover. I would have taken more photos of everything except I've been having issues with my phone and it kept dying when ever i photographed anything (so frustrating!) I was well pleased with the indoor pool area and workout space (tho i only used the pool area). I heard they sell passes to the locals there to use the pool and workout space which is pretty cool! Altho they need to put wifi in that area as well, i had to go out into the hall to get any kind of signal to the wifi. They have a breakfast in the mornings, that you have to get a pass to at the front desk, and I only went to it once, because it was soo early, and I just don't normally eat that much when i wake up. I wish the room had a fridge in it too, but thankfully the front desk let me use a bit of their space for things. read more

A smile the second I walked in and friendly service throughput the visit! I was craving a Dr. Pepper and they did not have it on the soda gun at the bar so a staff member went to the staff lounge to get me a Dr Pepper from there. Every member of the staff was willing to go above and beyond. On top of the great service, they were also very accommodating to the needs of my dog. The hotel is gorgeous and keeps its historic value. I will definitely be back even it's just for a drink at the hotel bar to listen to the live music and enjoy the comforting atmosphere! I was a resident at the property for 2 months straight for work and Steve (the owner) as well as his service-first staff made sure every single one of my needs were attended to. The hotel was recently renovated and it is simply beautiful!!! The atmosphere makes you feel like you're not in Wisconsin anymore. We recently went to the cafe located in the hotel and the service was wonderful, but the coffee needs some work. My cup of coffee had a soapy flavor and we have had a very watery iced latte. The food was very cold. There is a lot of potential here and we are looking forward to coming back for a visit in the future once they work out the kinks! read more

This hotel is a diamond in the rough. Everything is made with a lot of attention to detail. From the lobby to your room. Everything has been recently renovated, and smelled like brand new. Very nice hotel, we had a great stay. Looked more like a hotel in NYC than in Fond du Lac. One minor complaint with the bar downstairs...two bartenders insisted they knew how to make a Manhattan, despite them going through some recipes. They did not know how to make a Manhattan, an upscale place like this that charges what they charge for drinks should hire experienced bartenders. I paid $21 for a Manhattan and a tonic with lime (no alcohol). I suggest one of the many bars in walking distance. Probably just growing pains. The hotel has been restored to a 1920's style luxury hotel, and its wonderful. Pay a little extra for one of the grades rooms, and you get a lot more! Beautiful black and white, Art Deco motif. Bathrobes, luxury soaps, it was a fantastic hotel, making me believe I was in a much larger city. The restaurant was incredible. Everyone was thrilled with every drink, every meal, every detail, first rate. My only comment would be on all the menus, there should be a 'lighter' choice for people wanting to Way h calories. Breakfast was great, just no light choices. I Loved the hotel, restaurant and bar, and I will be back, just to enjoy the hotel!! read more
