I had a single room, but with plenty of room to spread out and work in the evening. The hotel is immediately next door to the funicular, so getting to and from the train station is very easy. It's also in a pedestrian area, within easy walking distance of excellent restaurants and shopping, as well as beautiful sights. The highlight of this hotel was the breakfast - simply the most amazing variety of food and beverages I have ever seen at a hotel.

This review is for the restaurant Veranda as we did not stay in the Villa d'Este hotel…read more We came here for dinner on Friday night along with two other couples. Upon arrival we were told that the men needed to be wearing jackets. I wish that our hotel had told us because my husband had packed one, but luckily the restaurant keeps spare jackets on site for just this situation. The large dining room is incredibly old school with beautiful brass dining chairs laden in blue and yellow striped fabric. When they brought out the wine list I thought it was a joke because it was the size of a dictionary! For dinner I had the beet tartare and the veal filet. The soy marinated tofu was a little bit of an odd flavor combined the beet dish but besides that it was quite good. My husband started with the gnocchi and it may have been the best dish of the night, it was dynamite. In my opinion, my veal filet was better than my husbands beef filet and I also really enjoyed the petite eggplant parmigiana that came with it. Soufflé and ice creams for dessert were a big hit, but I was especially pleased because I asked if they had some dark chocolates off menu and they brought me out a beautiful assortment that tasted as good as they looked. Great restaurant if you are looking for an elegant evening out on the town or an excuse to use the dinner jacket that you packed but thought you wouldn't need.

We ended up here after a car accident on the way to catch our flight out of Zurich and it couldn't have been more perfect. They not only helped us get our car to a first class auto shop, black car taxis to the auto shop, luggage carried all over, translations for us as we don't speak Italian, help changing our flights, dinner breakfast fresh fruit in the rooms and water. It was truly amazing. We are forever grateful for this place and these people, and will tell everyone we know about it all! We will be back for sure! :) thank you with all our hearts!

Stayed here for 2 nights in May as part of a group tour…read more Our room was very big and facing the lake with a small balcony. I was very happy with the room and wish we had more time to spend there. There were some chocolates and jellies waiting for us in the room when we checked in which were delightful! The location of the hotel is very conveniently located with a quick walk to the downtown Lugano area with lots of shops and restaurants. We had breakfast included which was buffet style. The first morning we got there early and had a spot outside to enjoy the view. The breakfast itself was just okay. The second day our group was leaving early so they had arranged for an earlier opening for breakfast but when we got there they were still setting up and did not have all the options available. All said, I would consider staying there again if ever back in the area. I understand there are two parts of the hotel and have heard negative things about the other part so would want to make sure I was in a similar lake facing room in the main hotel building.

His mother had a lake view room across the hall - smaller, but with a beautiful view of the lake. Huge balcony! Breakfast was included, basic but filling enough. Breads, croissants, lots of jams and Nutella, some meats, granola, yogurt, boiled eggs, and coffee. We stayed at the end of September, which is off season and when it starts to cool down. Would be amazing in the summer. Can lie out on the dock, take their paddle boat out, and go for a swim. Boat, train and bus stops nearby (walking distance). We even walked to a nearby town Bissone for dinner one night. Great stay! Would come back again!

The room was pristine. The views from our balcony were unreal. The restaurant was great, the breakfast was great. I will absolutely be coming back here when I stay in Varenna someday again. Make sure you listen to their website when it says to pack light, you really do have to climb up a lot of stairs to get to your room that are very narrow and it is pretty much impossible to do if you have a large suitcase.

My guess is that Varenna is a magnet for American destination weddings, which probably explains why parts of these Hotels' reservation books were already full, even when we inquired many months in advance.
