We booked a economy double, but they ran out and gave us a free upgrade to a standard double instead. So yay! In terms of the space, we were two floors down, except it was still ground level with the back patio. We had a huge window, but never saw anybody in the tables in the back, which was weird. In terms of the room, the size was fine. Beds were reasonably comfortable, and housekeeping was swift and thorough. The only thing that wasn't great was the bathroom. The paint was peeling off part of the wall, and the soap dispensers were pretty bad. They didn't provide any additional toiletries, and the soap in the shower was the same as the handsoap by the sink (warning: it will dry out your skin really badly). Looking through the main directory, they offer a ton of extras and services, most without an additional cost. So that was good to know. The front desk staff was super helpful and friendly.

If you're used to American hotels the rooms are not very large, but it's Amsterdam. Besides, how much time are you spending in your room? The room furniture was a bit strange: the bedside reading lamp gave just a narrow slit of light, so you had to move your book up and down. The shower head could not be angled far down, so the bathroom was flooded, even if we took care. We went out for breakfast, so no opinion on what they provide. There is a bar and nice lobby area. Personnel are friendly and helpful. Wifi is free. The main reason for getting this hotel is the location: right next to the Vondelpark and just a couple of minutes walking from Rijkmuseum and Leidseplein. There is a bicycle rental just up the street. Also, the 197 bus to the airport is about 5 minutes walking away, and much more convenient and a lot cheaper than taxi+train.

Opened the door to the bathroom and the sink was dirty and there was a strong sewer smell. Was unsatisfied with state of room so checked out and was told manager would follow-up but despite numerous attempts to speak to someone was not contacted and was not credited for the 5 nights stay despite never using the room. The third party booking site didn't follow through either.

The beds are super comfy (we had a double) and it is so very quiet that we got some great sleep. The hotel promptly acknowledged their team of bed bug experts did, in fact, find the infestation. I took several pictures and videos of the damage these bugs did, however, I will not be posting them to Yelp as decorum on this site must be upheld, and I feel my frank warning is more than adequate. Management at Hotel Espresso have promised to reimburse me, but I have not seen the money and it's been in the vicinity of a month. I'll bother them again for the reimbursement, and, if they follow through, I will update my review, but I won't be changing my 1-star assessment.

To the hotels defense: I should have researched the google street view prior to booking. 2. We were originally booked in the Marie Antoinette room. It was nicely decorated but lacked an air-conditioning unit. a. To the hotels defense: some of the room have a portable dyson looking fan/electric fan. The front desk (or lack thereof) was very accommodating and "exchanged" us to a standard room with a centralized a/c unit. Location: Close proximity to all the sites, canals and Centraal Station within 5 minutes walking distance. There is a tram stop directly outside the hotel and Ubers can pick up/ drop off as well. However, picture this hotel in Time Square between Madam Tussauds and the Olive Garden- in my opinion, that too many tourist for a small area. The Staff: there is no lobby or waiting area. The check in is through a narrow hallway and a person manning what to me seemed to be a poorly constructed booth. However, the staff were very helpful in accommodating our request for a room change and tried their very best to make us feel welcome. Bottom Line: This hotel is not for everyone. My girlfriend and I loved Amsterdam but would have enjoyed the city more if it were not for the location- this could have been avoided should I have done more research.

very disappointed in this hotel. we paid $700 a night with breakfast…read more and wasnt impressed. the good- decent location, decent breakfast, loved the hostess for the dining room. staff was helpful. we had a view of the back canal which was pretty. the bad- the room was small, and our room was always the last to be cleaned. the day we arrived room wasn't ready until 3:00, although other rooms were ready, we sat in the lobby for 2 and half hours while others checked in after 12. Then every day after touring the city, the room still wasn't fully cleaned by 3:30, when we just wanted to use our Room. Maybe it was the jet lag but I think we could of stay at another Hotel, and had a better experience.

We received the dungeon room (down a flight of stairs) to a view of turf with a skylight. Stains on the wallpaper, toilet seat almost attached and a maze outside to get to our room. Before using the toilet for the first time i had to hand tighten the seat on both sides. I gave it two star rating because the beds were ok and it was quiet for sleeping. The beds are very squishy like sleeping on a waterbed. Sheets had a blood stain on it and mold on the ceiling/shower along with some spots near the room vent. Our room has a long hallway and one lightbulb with two bed lights available. Our door key didn't open the outside the first time we went to use it and the lobby room looks like a small tourism office than a hotel. The long hallway has a bike storage that you walk through the outside to get to the group of rooms. Maybe it is called this because you go outside like a horse first? They have a guy holding onto a horse in water as a wallpaper mural in the lobby and in our room. Would not stay here again.
