If Hospitality School offered a class called How To Keep Your Hotel In Top Condition, they'd include a field trip to see how it's done here. From the outside, it more or less just looks like an old building. Inside, it's kind of like stepping back in time, to the days when folks built nice hotels with lots of cool architectural details and craftsmanship. But it's actually better than that, because modern amenities like air conditioning that works well are found in today's Winneshiek. Pro Tip - if your room is too warm, ask at the front desk for them to adjust the temperature. They can do a lot more from there than you can in your room, where you only have +/- 3 degrees of control. read more

Check in was fine. There was a barrier between the staff and myself but the staff wasn't wearing a mask. We didn't really see anyone else in the hotel besides at the bar at night. The hotel is nice. It seems to be the only hotel downtown. Would stay here again for that reason alone and it's also pet friendly. One issue we did have was from the adjoining room. Since it was only a door between us, noise was definitely an issue. We did call the front desk and they were able to resolve that for us. They have a front and a back entrance, which was nice for parking and bringing in luggage. It is a beautiful hotel and the lobby was very welcoming and warm! Thanks for our stay. read more

Historic downtown Decorah hotel. Very elegant and well kept! Loved the feeling of feeling as though we stepped back in time while staying at this hotel. We stayed in a corner room with a very comfy king sized bed and a jacuzzi tub! Definitely a great relaxing room for a getaway. Our only complaints are that the bar had limited hours and was not serving food - we primarily came to stay at this hotel as we heard the restaurant is amazing. They had 3 local beers on tap and some very nice cocktails available. The bartender working was not the friendliest - he seemed annoyed to be working... Just a note - you can get takeout from the local pizza places right by the hotel and they deliver to the bar... so you can still get food. read more

We stayed at the Hotel Winneshiek when we came in from out of town for a beer release at Toppling Goliath. We enjoyed our stay greatly. The hotel is a beautiful old building with wonderful details and big sweeping stairway. The lobby was large and beautiful. Our room was large and clean. The front desk staff were both very helpful. The hotel is located right in the heart of town, surrounded by restaurants, coffee spots and shops worth exploring. On the day of the release the hotel was visited by two shuttle services. There is a restaurant in the hotel, but we did not eat there. I highly recommend a stay at Hotel Winneshiek! read more

Really cool hotel on the main drag in Decorah. The beds were comfortable and the rooms were clean. The service was decent. There is a bar/restaurant attached to the lobby that was very accommodating to our group. They provided (primarily the bartender) exceptional service. If you are ever in Decorah, Iowa, and you need a place to stay, right in the middle of town, try making reservations at Hotel Winneshiek. We stayed here while in town for our nieces graduation from Luther College. Hotel Winneshiek is a wonderful, old hotel, right in the middle of small town Decorah, Iowa. It is expensive to stay here, but worth the stay. Service is very good, and the hotel is just comfortable, and very beautiful. We were very fortunate to stay in the Presidential Suite, as well. WOW! Yes, it is pricey, but so worth the price. The Presidential Suite is two rooms, with a king 4-poster bed, a small dining table, a small kitchenette, a guest bathroom, and a jacuzzi tub and a separate shower and bathroom. Oh, did I mention the 2 televisions too! Parking - lots of parking in the back of the hotel, a rather large lot, and it's free too! Restaurants - there is the Tap Room, with a small menu of appetizers and some entrees. You can also get drinks/beer too. The Tap Room is small, and not very comfortable to hang out in for a few hours, maybe an hour, but it is small and cozy. There is also Restauration Restaurant, which is pricey, but good and comfortable. Anyway, book your stay at Hotel Winneshiek, it is worth it. read more

This hotel is a bit tough to rate. If I was rating this with Starwoods or Marriott's this would be a 3. I give it a three based on room quality. Small & minimal. The bathrooms are update & elegant but that is about it. The hotel itself (lobby, bar & restaurants) are all a 4. So that is why I am giving this a 4. You don't have too much of a choice when staying in this small town so don't expect too much for the price they charge during peak times. I went over Christmas and since my parent's were sick my son & I got a last minute room. It ran us around $135 a night. If you factor in the price difference or cost of living in Iowa vs. what $135 would get you elsewhere you see how tough it is to rate this hotel. Again, if you are a type that is used to the 4 star big boy hotel chains....don't expect too much from this quaint little place. read more

My wife and I usually spend a night or two in Decorah at least once a year. We almost always stay at Hotel Winneshiek. This time I accidentally left my electric toothbrush in our room when we checked out. The cleaning crew found it, and the front desk will be shipping it back to me. You won't get this type of service at many hotels. We didn't need another reason why to keep coming back (their rooms are well appointed, clean and spacious), but it was well appreciated. read more

Excellent location and even though the value isn't quite there, the occasional stay is still warranted to enjoy a piece of Decorah history. One suggestion, educate staff on the history of this wonderful building - I was sternly corrected when I had commented on its late 1970s-late 1980s portion of history. Historical 19th century hotel with 18th century beds. We arrived Thanksgiving Day after a 11hr road trip. Understandably their restaurant & bar were closed, so we had pizza next door at Mabes, that's a separate review. The Hostess was wonderful, very pleasant & accommodating. The room was clean & spacious, but the bed was horrible. After a long trip, a comfy bed is greatly desired. We stayed in 4 hotels in our week long road trip & this was the worst bed. My husband and I stayed here for the first time in May of 2015. We got the King mini suite room and were looking forward to a romantic, relaxing stay. It was more than we usually spend on hotel rooms ($210 including tax) so we were really hoping it was worth it... Pros: -The location was perfect-right in middle of Decorah, right next to all the bars and restaurants, also the hotel itself has its own restaurant and tap room (we did not eat/drink there though, so no comments on that) - the king suites and mini king suites have gigantic two person tubs with jets that are great, the tub was very clean and the hot water never ran out -king bed was very comfortable Cons: -carpet and tile were a bit worn -the room just wasn't as fancy as were were hoping-really plain, not many decorative accents, couch and desk looked like they belonged in a cheaper room, we thought it would be more elegant and the Winneshiek itself would be more impressive ***Biggest con-the ceiling/walls are way too thin! We were on the 2nd floor and we woke up at 3am to our (most likely drunk) neighbors on the 3rd floor stomping around their room and could not fall back asleep for 2 hours until they finally went to sleep. It was terrible, we tried calling the front desk for help to quiet them down but no one was there at that time... So, I probably would have rated it 4 stars (or 3 1/2 if that was an option) if we couldn't hear our neighbors through the walls. If we were to come back to Decorah, we would maybe consider staying here again, but most likely would look for something else as it just didn't seem worth the price. However, the location is great, rooms are clean, and staff is friendly, just wasn't the experience we were hoping for. read more

Charming old hotel in the middle of town. Worth it for comfort, history, & location. Don't expect amenities though. We had the queen suite, nice jacuzzi. Spacious room, but no furniture! There are more sinks (3) than chairs. When friends came over we had to sit on the bed. Thought of dragging in one of the many couches they have in the lobby. Had read online that the hotel had been restored about 10 years ago, but wasn't prepared for the extent to which they had gone. Woodworkers, stained glass artists, plasterers, marble workers, all brought in to restore to as close to original as possible. It is beautiful! And still looks fresh and clean. Sometimes after restoration, a place starts to get dingy after a while, but not this place. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, and the staff is very friendly. Was surprised at how inexpensive it was for what we got. The same thing in Chicago would easily have been 50%-75% more. read more

Restauration for dinner was excellent. Duck was as good as any duck I have had. The Sil Salat was unique and tasty - especially for herring lovers. We really enjoyed our Christmas stay here. Stayed for the whole week of Christmas as we were visiting family in the area. Staff was nice, prices were decent, room was very clean. Enjoyed room service twice for breakfast, it was good. Didn't have a chance to try the restaurant this trip, but loved it last time we were in a Decorah. The location is on Water St in Decorah which is their "Main Street". Shopping, restaurants, and bars all within walking distance of the hotel. Lobby was decorated beautifully for Christmas including a real fire place. Just the extra touch to make it feel like home. Christmas morning the restaurant was closed so they offered complimentary pastries, coffee, and yogurt in the lobby. This building is over a 100 years old, very historic, yet remodeled nicely. read more
