The owners/cooks need to go on a field trip to Toronto - go to Moon Palace Cantonese Cuisine to see what REAL authentic Cantonese / Chinese food is. Go eat at House of Gourmet on Dundas. Check out Pearl Harbourfront Chinese Cuisine Visit a few more, once you have learned, come back, re-do your menu, and live up to the sign you put up in front of your restaurant. Let's get to the review for "House of Lam" They served me Boxed Rice and called it Fried Rice. I recognize Minute rice and Rice Roni from my College days. The sweet and sour sauce looked, felt, smelled and tasted exactly like great value sweet and sour sauce you get from Walmart. The chicken balls were probably the lowest quality chicken you could get, same with the egg rolls. I'm willing to bet they got generic freezer pre-made chicken balls and rolls from the grocery store. Don't even get me started on the SLIMY chicken. The chow mein doesn't have any noodles... it's just soggy bean sprouts. It's 100% bean sprouts, 0% noodles. I asked them why the Chow Mein was just bean sprouts without noodles? They explained it was a "Traditional Cantonese style of making Chow Mein" That's weird, because when I went to a Cantonese restaurant in Hong Kong - I ate at Cantonese restaurants that put bean sprouts AND noodles in their chow mein, it was BOTH, not just bean sprouts. We ordered 1 lunch special, 1 order of orange chicken, and an extra serving of chow mein and fried rice. This is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE for a 80$ lunch between 2 people. Way too expensive to be serving such dog shit quality food. I hate that it says "Authentic Chinese" I grew up in Vancouver with Chinese friends and family, I dated a Chinese girl for 4 years. I've easily had over 10,000 Chinese meals at friends/girlfriends houses, during Lunar New Year, in Vancouver, in Hong Kong, in different places all over the world, and I've never had Chinese food this bad, or this wrong in my entire life. This is not a Chinese restaurant this is Monctonese at best. Owners - PLEASE follow the advice I gave at the top of my review so you can flip your business around, because the only people who think your restaurant is good, are people who grew up in Moncton, never had Chinese food and have nothing to compare it to. The server was a polite old lady, I gave her a 10$ tip on my 80$ bill and thanked her for her hospitality. No complaints about her. read more

During support your local restaurant day we were saddened to see our bill of $55 for a dinner for two and a wonton soup. Delivery charge of $8 during this time of social distance is a pretty hefty fee. Was not told about it and when called they didn't seem to care. Mentioned to them that I wouldn't be ordering again with this high delivery fee and she just said "ok" and ended the call. This time is hard on restaurants but shame on any restaurants raising delivery charges during these times, feels criminal to take advantage like this. read more

Used to be our go to Chinese diner, but quality and portions are seriously lacking now, not to mention the extreme price jump. Wouldn't mind paying the prices if the food was as good as it used to be, but its been disappointment after disappointment every time we try to give them another chance. The beef lo mein was greasy, beef was cut small and shrivelled like it was old and dried up prior to putting in the dish and very little in it. The portion wasn't even enough to satisfy two people, foam container half full. The sczechuan platters were another disappointment..lemon chicken had bits of chicken, looking like leftovers, hardly any in it, and not fresh. Pork had a sour taste and very hard. Chow mein, a soggy mess. It is a real shame, as their food used to be so good, but when you are paying $25+ a dish, at least make it fresh and give a normal portion. $125 wasted once again. We want to support local in Moncton, but with this quality, Kwongs in Riverview wins out. I do miss the old House of Lam I must say though, but enough is enough. read more

I went with a friend for the buffet lunch and I was pretty happy to see that they have my favorite porc in sour sauce! This dish was really good, however they did not have any white rice, not that much veggie, just lots of fries stuff. For the desert, they had a few cakes but nothing looked really appetizing. I was expecting for a Chinese chef but it looks like it was a Canadian one! Will not go back, does not worth it. read more

This spot is mixed in on the "Chinese Strip" in Moncton..I chose this spot based on a couple reviews on line. They couldn't be more right. From the outside it could be any type of food...upon entering there was nothing really leaning towards any style or type. From the friendly greeting to the speedy service to seat us it was AMAZEBALLS! We have no Chinese restaurant in Halifax that compares on any level. They use the freshest products, aren't afraid to use linen in the tables or for napkins. I can say enough about this family run spot that has been there for 40+ years. I truly wish we had something like this in Halifax. AWESOME value for your dollar as well! read more

We came across this little gem by complete chance after arriving in Moncton around 9ish on a Thursday night from Halifax. Feeling lazy and craving Chinese food, we decided to check out the local buffet scene. Thursday at 9pm = bad time to go to a Chinese buffet. The two places we walked into had bare buffets, staff telling us they weren't making any fresh food and trying to sell us the lot at very cheep... I might be in a Chinese buffet joint but I still have some form of integrity towards my stomach and taste buds!!! Not inspired and convinced I would not satisfy my cravings.... we spotted this place and said "Why Not?" Couldn't be much worst than the last 2 places... Don't be fooled by the "quiet" outside appearance of House of Lam along the "Moncton China Town" (part of mountain rd with lots of Chinese restaurants)... This was an amazing find. My only regret is that someone else had already reviewed on Yelp and I wouldn't be the first!!! :) After driving for a few hours, I again did not feel like making decisions so I opted for the Szechuan Combo plate. I know, I know, What are you thinking ordering a combo plate.... LET ME TELL YOU WHAT!!! This was amazing. None of this shameful chicken balls and red sauce and dry fried rice.... This was splendid!!! Lemon Chicken, with fresh crispy batter letting out a noticeable "CRUNCH" at every bite... and not because it was dry and old... the chicken was moist, the batter fresh and crispy and the sauce wonderful. The Szechuan chicken let off a nice array of heat and was surrounded by fresh vegetables, perfectly cooked. To my great surprise, crispy ginger beef on the plate, an all time favourite and of course some amazing fried rice. Oh, and I almost forgot the egg roll... Freshly "fried", nice and crisp ad juicy blend of veg and pork with a home made plum sauce.... Need I say more?!? read more

I'm afraid House of Lam did not live up to my expectations. Perhaps they were bloated by Yelp's ringing endorsements, but ultimately I expected more for the $15 buffet price. First the positives: the wait staff were courteous and friendly, and speedy too. They clearly took some pride or joy in their work. The decor was tasteful and the occasional tacky items I sometimes find in our local restaurants were blissfully absent. The food was actually pretty tasty. I'd highlight the egg roll, which seemed homemade to my relatively uncultured Chinese food pallet. The beef and mixed vegetables also seemed a cut above. However, the remainder of the ten dishes seemed average and unforgettably bland to me. And therein lies the rub: there were only TEN dishes for that buffet price, plus ONE soup (a decent tasting wonton). For that price point I would at least expect a token attempt at a salad bar, or perhaps an ice cream selection for desert, a kids entree of fries or chicken fingers, or even some pieces of melon or jello. Alas, it was not to be, which is unfortunately my summation of the entire eating experience. Good place, good food, but underwhelming in the offerings for that kind of money. read more

I ordered from another restaurant on Elmwood. My favorite meal is Beef and green pepper. House of lamb uses black bean sauce. This restaurant did not. House of lamb uses a good quality of beef. The other restaurant was chewy and flat. Yes you do pay more at House of lamb but it's worth it. Quality not quantity. Today I ordered from House of lamb. read more

Very unfortunate experience for a place I've enjoyed in the past. I phoned them to have a meal delivered, and asked if I could pay with my credit card. Most places these days will bring a portable debit/credit machine (even Greco!), but HoL wanted my actual credit card number. I'm sorry, but these days, I'm certainly not foolish enough to just toss my credit card number to some unknown over the phone. That's not really the unfortunate part, though, because obviously some folks don't care about giving out their cc number like that-- the issue was that when I said no thank you and cancelled the order (chow mein, nothing complicated) the lovely brat on the other end of the line slammed the phone down in what I can only assume, in her crude language, means "goodbye!" For a place with the good reputation that HoL has, I'd think they'd want to maintain it with some level of professionalism. Kindly leave your bad mood at home, my dear. I had the buffet. Selection was poor and it tasted mediocre at best. Even PF Chang's blows this place out of the water. But I guess Moncton may not have a PF Chang's or anything above mediocre quality, in which case this may be the best option in town sadly. I guess you gotta take what you can get out here. read more

So I guess my idea of Chinese greens differs from House of Lam.... Chinese greens ended up being mostly green peppers.... Sauce was not bad.... Lemon chicken was typical... Chemical taste from what ever powder mix they use.... Pork was dry..... Doesn't matter how much sauce you put on it ...... Disappointing Canadian Chinese food.... If you are going for Chinese food in the city of Moncton, you are doing yourself a dis-service if you are not going to this restaurant. This restaurant is in an institution in the city. They have a tremendous variety, many of which are not available at other spots in the city. I would not bother with the buffet, as any one of their combo plates will leave you MORE than full. The szechuan platter is my go to dish here. Served with chicken fried rice, a generous portion of lemon chicken and Cantonese pork. Just the right amount of heat to this spicy dish too! read more

I would LOVE to give this place a 5/5 but there are just a couple of factors that make it impossible. The Won Ton Soup is still very, very, very overpriced (now $6.95) and lacking flavour - like flavour at all - it was one of the most bland Won Ton soups I have ever had. I ordered the soup to start - hoping it would have improved but I was absolutely disappointed. Yes, for an appetizer that is almost $7 I would expect something with flavour but it is completely a miss and I do not recommend at all - It has about 3/4 cup of broth (no flavour at all) with about 3 dumplings, some cabbage and tiny pieces of cut up pork. My boyfriend ordered the fried wontons (12) for $5.95 with what looked liked heated up cherry sauce from the grocery store. They were good, nicely fried but had a heated up sauce (cherry) that was too reminiscent of the cherry sauce you can buy at any store. The dishes we ordered - House of Lam special dish - which had lobster (nice amount for sure!), pork, chicken, beef and veggies, mushrooms in a very tasty sauce ($21.95). We also ordered the Singapore Chow Main with Pork (and curry) ($17.95) with Stir fried rice noodles, sautéed with choice of meat and touch of green and red peppers. We had left overs for sure which we got containers for. I would highly recommend these dishes but the prices seem out of whack. To me, for lunch - this is way to much to pay for a simple day out. Improve your quality guys and lower the prices. PLEASE DO NOT order the Won Ton Soup. For $6.95 it is over priced and has absolutely no flavour. You an do better, House of Lam! read more

Food is good. Service at the table on a Saturday night was slow. It makes it impossible for my wheelchair bound family members to eat at this restaurant because the washrooms are in a corner in the basement with a narrow door. Even the person who walks with a walker can't access your basement washroom. Your consideration in looking in this seriously would be very appreciated for my wheelchair bound family members who would like to enjoy your food at your restaurant. Thanks. read more
