A historical marker is the only feature at this small loop that functions as a rest area near the…read moreBolivar Peninsular. There are no other services here - no restrooms, no trash cans and probably no overnight parking. But the marker is interesting to learn some history of the area. It reads, "The coastal community of High Island sits atop a salt dome at the east end of Bolivar Peninsula. It was named High Island because the hill sits about 45 feet above sea, the only dry land visible during storms and flooding. "Settled by anglos in the early 1800s, nearly all of High Island lies within the Martin Dunman survey, granted in 1837. The pioneers were mostly farmers, though George E. Smith gained fame from his patented bottled water from natural springs on his land. "The town expanded in 1886 when the gulf and interstate railroad began operations in the area. A depot was built along with many new businesses. In 1897, C.T. Cade constructed the Sea View hotel on the hill overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. The hotel became a place of refuge in 1900 and 1915 when hurricanes struck the Texas coast, causing flooding over the peninsula. "Oil was discovered on High Island, with successful drilling beginning in 1916. Petroleum deposits found at the perimeter of the salt dome in 1931 started an oil boom and provided employment for the region. "High Island has become recognized internationally as an important habitat for migratory birds, bringing crowds of birdwatchers annually to the area." This is marker number 7490 and it was erected in 1996 by the Texas Historical Commission. The above-mentioned migratory birds seem to have added to the marker. Yelp wants to know if I would recommend the social security office... I'm not really sure if anyone…read morewould really RECOMMEND it, but it's kind of a necessary chore sometimes. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ My visit was a one of those necessary chores. We were having an issue with putting our son on our taxes, and thankfully we finally got it sent in because I made an appointment on February 22nd, but the soonest appointment was APRIL 20TH! Two months later, and 5 days after the tax cutoff day. Even though we got our taxes done, I still needed to fix the problem. I was dreading the appointment because I didn't want to spend half the day waiting to speak to someone... but thankfully my mom is a gem who was willing to babysit so at least I didn't have to bring an unwilling toddler with me. Others weren't so fortunate. There were several children who were not happy to be there, but their mom's were champs and over all, it was pretty tame in there. My appointment was at 10 AM. There weren't very many people in the waiting area when I got there even though the parking lot was mostly full and there were a few people standing outside in a line. It turns out they were just signing in with the posted QR codes. I scanned the QR code, went inside, and checked in on my phone. Then I needed to scan my phone at a kiosk to get a receipt with a code. I sat down and was relieved that there were maybe 15 people total waiting. After 5ish minutes a lady asked if anyone had an appointment. Me and one other man raised our hands. She sent us both to a window and I was extremely happy that I was going to be in and out in a jif... so I thought. I told the lady what was going on with my son's social and what I needed to do and she literally told me that she wasn't good at that so I'd need someone else to help me. Umm... 'scuse me? Well okay then... So she tells me that I need to fill out a form for the next person. I explained that I already filled it out online and she said that they would need it on paper as well, so go ahead and fill it out again. Again... what? Okay, sure. I sat, filled out the form, and waited. And waited. And waited some more. After waiting an hour, nobody was at her window so I asked her if I was sent back to the back of the line. At this point the place was filling up, so waiting was becoming a bit less pleasant. She said that I was sent to the back of the line because I didn't have an appointment. I informed her that I DID have an appointment. At 10... She looked me up and looked my son up, saw that I had an appointment, and said that someone would be with me in a few minutes. I sat back down and was called in less than 5 minutes. The man that helped me was pleasant and kind. I was out of there in less than 10 minutes from the time I sat down with him. This tells me that I could've gotten out of there by 10:30 had there not been confusion with the first lady. Could've been a five star experience. I will forever make an appointment though... unless I can't wait 2 months for assistance.

They arrived and spent several minutes (around five) walking around the outside of the house before entering the gate. They then broke through my locked front gate, forcing it inward in the opposite direction it opens, and came up the stairs without a warrant or any apparent emergency. At the top of the stairs there is a second gate to enter onto my deck. This is where I was standing when the officer came barreling up my stairs at which time I told them there was no need for them to be there. Instead of leaving or trying to calmly assess the situation he forced entry through the second gate by pushing me to the ground and forcing the gate open then jumped on top of me to arrest me. There was no active domestic disturbance at the time. During the incident, an officer drew his firearm, which was extremely frightening with my husband and daughter present. While I was in custody and handcuffed, I was slammed into a concrete wall and then forced to the ground, this resulted in my face being injured so badly I needed stitches and had two black eyes and a extremely swollen face taking months to heal. Afterward, I reviewed the body camera footage through my attorney. On that footage, I heard an officer make a statement to another officer that included words to the effect of: "the stupid bitch jumped me, I thought I was going to have to shoot her." The officer's written report and account of events do not match what is shown in the body camera footage or what I experienced during the incident. The body camera footage was provided through my attorney in a restricted format that I cannot publicly share. I believe it is important for situations like this to be reviewed seriously and for proper accountability so similar incidents do not continue without scrutiny.
