The marker reads, "This County, created by Act of the Legislature December 13, 1808, is named for Count Casimir Pulaski, Polish hero of the Revolutionary War who died fighting in Georgia and is buried in Savannah. Court was to be held at the home of Isham Jordan until the County Site was selected at Hartford in 1810. It was moved across the Ocmulgee to Hawkinsville in 1836 when this town was incorporated. Among the first County Officers were: Sheriff Lewis Holland, Clerk of the Superior Court Richard H. Thomas, Clerk of Inferior Court John Rainey, Coroner William Brocken and Surveyor John Bush." The site includes a museum, a cemetery, and a driving tour around the area where the camp once stood. The museum is dedicated to prisoners of war more generally, and strikes a nice balance between telling the history of this specific place (including in a harrowing movie), but also connecting the issues faced by POWs throughout history. It also clearly explains the U.S. military code with regards to how to handle being captured. It's not a huge museum, but with the film I spent the better part of an hour. A tour of the camp can be done by either walking or driving. A piece of wooden stockade has been built, which offers a striking audiovisual experience when the lively atmosphere is cut off as you enter it. The area otherwise just marks where the rest of the stockade used to me, and also includes a variety of war monuments and informational signage. The cemetery is still active, containing not just the identified remains of many former Union POWs, but also American service members who have lived and died in subsequent eras. A map of the other major POW camps spans broadly. I've been to a few of those areas, but it would be quite a project to see all of them, even just the ones that have an actual surviving site and exhibition. However, the topic is compelling, combining the mechanics of war history with a lesson in the depths of human depravity, and an issue that will unfortunately always be relevant.

The museum was my favorite part, as the video and artifact offerings are excellent. If one takes the time, they will be enlightened on the American POW experience in all its wars. THE 29TH ANNUAL DOGWOOD FESTIVAL!…read more The Perry Chamber of Commerce is the driving force behind the annual Dogwood Festival now in its 29th year. The festival is held in downtown Perry and is a great way to experience the local community. During the festival, downtown merchants are open and available to serve you. The festival consisted of vendors selling arts and crafts or personal services. We actually stopped by and had a chat with the Verizon guy because we are needing to adjust our current plan and it actually saved us a trip to the store. Thanks! We were really impressed by the food vendors at this particular festival because much of what we saw was freshly prepared over a grill and looked very good. There was no problem finding vegetables and there were no funnel cakes in sight! Yes! We actually ate prior to arriving to the festival because we were not sure about the quality of the food served and wanted to make sure we weren't going to be hungry. If you decide to eat at the festival, bring your appetite because the portions were HUGE! They offered Philly cheese steaks, crabcakes, 1/2 pound burgers, chicken kabobs, The main stage featured dance groups, individual performers and singing groups. However, I do wish they had provided an additional stage offered in a less congested area where you could just chill and enjoy the music. Nothing fancy, just shade, chairs and speakers. I have attended festivals in small towns and the additional staging areas really help to minimize congestion and provide options for those who might just want to listen to music instead of standing and struggling to see the performance stage. I only wish that we could have stayed longer perhaps overnight because they have the hot air balloon glow at night and the air dogs performing on Sunday. We really had a busy weekend planned so we could not stay long. *** The festival featured a designated play area for children with a climbing wall and giant sider structure. ***If you are a pet lover, you would have appreciated the area designed specifically for pets and their owners. Here you could find pet related merchandise toys and services. ***Our very best experience was meeting Bobby Morris, an artist from Byron, GA. He created our caricature and did a fantastic job! I simply said I want to look cool in this one and he more than SLAYED the thing. I love it!!! This alone was worth the drive down as we are avid collectors. Bobby was so cool and personable that he would be the perfect guy to hire for your summer party. Your guests will love him! ***This is a two-day festival so you can also take time to check it out today, (Sunday), as well. While in the city, we also took time to check out the historic community theatre and to attend the spring home and garden show. If you are going to go, you might as well make it a complete experience. Just beware that this time of year you will experience heavy spring break traffic on I-75 going North. Traffic was fairly congested but we hopped over to 285 and it was a much better choice.

The marker is in excellent condition with no deterioration. The cornerstone reads, "Erected by the Daughters of the Confederacy. Mrs. G.W. Jordan, President. Mrs. P.H. Lovejoy, Secretary and Treasurer." The obelisk is about 30 feet tall and features THREE statues on it. I assume the two lower ones are Jefferson Davis (President of the CSA) and Robert E. Lee (General of the Confederate Army) with the one atop a model confederate soldier leaning on his rifle. There front between Davis and Lee has a Confederate "Stars & Bars" with the words "Comrades." and "To our Confederate Soldiers." Normally, I would rate this two stars because the Civil War is over and the South lost. But this marker is actually very nice (for what it is) and is A-OK.
