It was a great opportunity to see the museum and the grounds. If you're looking for something indoors to entertain your littles, this place is perfect with their interactive children's area. There were multiple activities (a train set up to play with, playhouse, block building, light board). Nice weather outside? This place is also perfect for strolling outside to all their interactive exhibits and trails. We've been to railroad museums before so to be able to get inside a rail car without rules of "no touching" "look only," it was nice to let the kid climb and explore all the sections inside. Older children? They have year round activities for them too available before you begin a tour. Each exhibit in the museum has some type of interesting fact or older kiddo scavenger hunt.

The Texas Prison Museum in Huntsville delivers a surprisingly deep and thoughtfully arranged collection of the state's correctional history with a collection of memorabilia, videos, displays and such that is tremendous and possible overwhelming without being sensational. I thought that the actual prison cell mockup was pretty good because it shares that immediate physical sense of confinement that no documentary ever quite captures. While I never did the "scared straight" thing as a kid, this would definitely work to keep me on the legal side of the law as that spall space made the whole idea of consequences feel quite real. The museum is easy to navigate and completely handicapped accessible. The staff is welcoming and the exhibits seem to strike a balance between historical detail and human stories. I didn't buy any of the prisoner-made trinkets. That seemed too much. This was a tremendous five star stop. Pro tip: Check the Texas Department of Criminal Justice website for scheduled executions. I understand that the protesters and counter-protesters can get quite passionate and while that's a couple miles from here, it does get Livingston rather cloggedup. I visited a few years back when they had the traveling Audubon Collection on exhibit and really couldn't make a higher recommendation. The MET has an extensive permanent collection and a great rotation of visiting exhibits that make every visit a unique experience. Lufkin may be a small community but this is no small museum, and is on par with anything the bigger cities have to offer!

3.5 This is a great…read morelittle museum for the little ones but not much here for adults. There's a room with live animals, fish and even bees. Then there's a hall with rocks and gemstones. Then there were some stuff animals, bones and replicas. The final section was local Texas history. It didn't take long to see it all. They were also setting up a née display so many displays were empty. Bathrooms are in the meeting Hal next door and parking was ample.

So much history from Teague, TX inside, not just trains! A personable former engineer who worked at…read morethis depot gives tours and shares his experience. You can walk through a caboose and climb up on the engine of "Big Mike" and pull the cord to ring the bell. There is a huge model train setup and he lets little ones hit the button to blow the whistle. Also, an old fire truck you can get behind the wheel of and ring the incredibly loud bell. There are also actual prison cells from the day. Upstairs contains even more history from the area - Historical photos, local high school paraphernalia, hospital equipment, a massive salt shaker collection and so much more. We had a great time and wanted to share this local wealth of historical knowledge we found. It's open Sat & Sun 1-5pm, $2 adults & $1 kids.
