As an upcoming senior, the college process was already daunting for me. While taking 5 AP classes junior year, standardized testing was something that I could not make time for. I struggled to stay on schedule to study for the SAT/ACT, and I could not find a personal way for me to take and succeed in the tests. I had taken SAT prep classes the summer before junior year, but the class setting was not suited for me to succeed in the test. After taking the ACT in December, I strongly preferred this test over the SAT. The only problem was I did not have a master plan for me to get my score higher, and I did not know how to approach a test that was apparently new to me. One day while scrolling on Instagram, I saw an ad for the Howard Test Prep spring scholarship. The package included waived fees for the next two testing dates (April and June) while including test preparation with the owner, Daniel, himself, with practice tests I would be taking. I knew this was my chance to get help for a test I wanted to succeed in. I applied for the scholarship, and luckily, I was able to receive it. Working with Daniel has been an absolute pleasure. When I first met him, he went through my December ACT and went through the sections I needed the most help on. He was very meticulous and detailed about his tutoring- I absolutely was enthralled by his professionalism he presented to me and my mom. In fact, my ACT score was a big factor into admissions into the Questbridge College Prep Scholars Program, a rigorous program where only about 28 percent of the nation's best high school juniors are selected to be part of the cohort. The ACT is a lot different from the SAT as I learned, and tests more on how sharp you are at thinking and how fast you are able to process information. The college process can often feel isolating and unforgiving. Specifically, standardized test taking can be difficult for students - especially students who (like myself) find bubbling in answers against a clock to be an unfair measure of intelligence and worth.
