But once he started at the Phoenix School, things turned around. He came home after the first day and said, "It's like the teachers aren't even teachers--they're just people!" The caring relationship with his teachers, the community at the school, the way his teachers push him to do more than he thought he could and support him as he learns to push himself has been amazing. He loves school now and is thriving academically, socially, and emotionally. The way they integrate learning across all their activities is special. Students learn all the academic skills throughout all their activities, along with specialized practice in, say, math or writing, especially as they get older. They also use the community at large as their classroom with frequent out-of-the-classroom learning experiences that engage students far more than anything I've seen at any other school. Teachers support students as they produce high-quality work, with autonomy and ownership over their own learning. Teachers are among the most dedicated professional educators I've ever met. They work hard to create a community of students, faculty, staff, parents, and community members dedicated to the well-being and education of students as complete people. It's not possible for me to say enough good things about this school.

The staff at Plumfield truly sees the children and encourages and supports each one of its students' strengths and interests. They make learning fun while allowing ample time for socialization and outdoor play. Plumfield is a special place - whether your child is quiet or loud, sensitive or bold, artistic or sporty, there is a spot for everyone. The teachers are invested and I drop my children off every day knowing they are well cared for, safe, and supported. Plumfield allows its children to be who they truly are, supporting them wholly. My sensitive son's confidence is soaring and I owe every bit of his progress to this wonderful school.

I literally saw a sign, a lawn sign, and as soon as I pulled up the website I knew this was the answer. We went in for a day to check it out and participated in a class that asked us to write down emotions that were putting holes in our buckets. We then went outside and burned them in a fire pit. This was exactly the type of place I wanted my son to be. My son was stressed out about the grades and tests and homework at his public school. We loved that Plumfield doesn't "test" their knowledge but rather has them do narration for what they are learning, really thinking about and writing down or speaking what they've learned. Our son works through his math book at his own pace. Beyond the general academics Plumfield teaches scripture while allowing the children to share and have their own beliefs. I love that they do nature study, logic, and the arts (drama, music, acting, etc). And my son is currently working through 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens which he has very much enjoyed. We love the "nontraditional" approach offering our child broader, life oriented lessons. The teachers have all been wonderful and supportive. The director John is an honest, wonderful man who has developed a loving relationship with my son helping him through struggles in his life. Our son says Plumfield feels like a family. We feel incredibly grateful that we were able to find this gem of a school for our son to finish out his middle school years. He is working with Plumfield to apply to St John's Prep for high school and we truly believe Plumfield has offered him the best preparation for his high school career.

The majority of the teachers have master degrees from Boston College and are excellent teachers. The staff and other educators are meticulously chosen and contribute to the school at the highest level. St. John School is only Catholic elementary school (Age 2 - 6th grade) in the heart of Boston proper and is conveniently located in the North End - and close to all major employers for parents to consider. Many families attend from East Boston, Medford, Revere, Saugus and many Boston neighborhoods. The students are out-performing BPS schools on MAP testing and exceptionally prepared for junior high. The 6th grade students interested in exam schools opt in to tutoring and prep for the fall exams and outperform their peers in many instances. The school community is bar none the best. Families have left SJS and returned because the community of teachers, staff, parents, grandparents, and extended family are exceptional. You cannot find this level of care and community anywhere else! This is also the most affordable private school option for many families who want to instill a Catholic education. All the students participate in what's called the Tower Garden. Ms. Shay created a hydroponic garden that is tended by each class over the course of the year. After the greens and veggies are harvested, they are hand delivered by students to different local non profit organizations like St. Anthony's Shrine and ABCD. Having the option of afterschool from 2:30 pm - 6pm plus a variety of enrichment classes and music lessons, makes this school even more attractive and special. Tours are provided by appointment all year round. And parents are always willing to share their experiences. I should note that a 2 year old program begins in September. That's in addition to the 2.9 yo program. Definitely check out the social media pages too. Facebook and instagram @stjohnschoolnorthend

Quite honestly I don't typically take time to write yelp reviews, however I have such admiration and respect for this high school I feel compelled to publicly share our experience. Words I use to describe St. Johns "they know boys" and work on the entire being to create respectful, confident young men. They promote an inclusive environment and from what I have witnessed, everyone can find their niche at this high school. Whether your son is an athlete, a musician, comedian, artist or is a wiz at a rubrics cube there is a place for him at this school. My son has friends on the baseball team, the math team and in his Chinese ambassadors club. Every one of them different in their own way, yet equally good of a friend. The head master, Ed Hardiman is a well spoken, caring and dedicated educator and St Johns is extremely fortunate to have such a talented man leading their school. The professors are typically men and woman who have both teaching degrees and real life corporate knowledge. They also have Xavarian brothers who have dedicated their lives to missionary work and share amazing life experiences with our children. They teach the boys to be humble, appreciate their good fortune and to give back and serve others less fortunate. My sons closest friends will be attending fabulous colleges that include Holy Cross, Tuffs, Carnegie Melon, Amherst and he will be attending MIT. They are all leaving St. Johns confident young men prepared to take on the academic vigor of these colleges. I hope you have found this review helpful. I remember four years ago looking for a private high school and how stressful of an experience it was for us. If I only knew then what I know today, I would have no hesitation what so ever.
